GIVE BACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON BY SUPPORTING LITERACY
|
Dear Friends of Jamaica:
Each year, a group of volunteers make strides in Jamaica by spotlighting literacy and motivating children near and far giving selflessly of their time, collecting donated materials and presenting them to children in various disadvantaged communities.
The Read Across Jamaica Foundation helps to bring a world of inquisitive interest and gained knowledge to students in rural and impoverished areas of Jamaica. Our “Journey to Jamaica” missions show the world that we care for its little children everywhere and we make time to work with struggling readers. Our annual “Read Across Jamaica Day” celebrations allow us to give the gift of literacy to a wanting child. But we need your help too.
Our motto: Share a book with a child and you have given illiteracy a dose of cure…
We know that you share a general concern for the welfare of children in the US, Jamaica and the Caribbean. It is not enough to keep talking about these issues; it is time now for action. We need your participation and support of this project to help us motivate children in the US and throughout the Caribbean. Your donation may be a one-time contribution or you may want to consistently help with a monthly or annual contribution.
For more information about our organization, visit our web presence at http://www.readacrossja.com or www.myspace.com/readacrossja or contact the Project Coordinator, Ja’nice Wisdom at 202.285.4673. CHEF MAYRA'S VEGETARIAN EGG ROLLS
|
You could use basil or just about any fresh herb that you like instead of mint. This Spring Roll recipe is both vegetarian and vegan. It can be completely vegan with Won-Tons instead of Egg-Rolls.
• 2 limes • 1 container firm tofu • ½ container of extra firm tofu pressed • ½ cup avocado oil • ½ cup olive oil • ½ jar of unrefined coconut oil • 1 tbsp sesame oil • ½ tsp ginger • Salt and pepper to taste • ¼ cup oregano fresh • ¼ cup of marjoram • 5 leaves fresh mint leaves • 1 cup of cilantro • 1/2 zucchini for the paste • 2 carrots, julienned • 1 zucchini, julienned • 1 yellow squash julienned • 2 ripped avocado sliced very thin • 1 tofu feta ( whole foods) slices in very long small pieces • spring roll wrappers or egg roll or won tons • water for the wrappers
Preparation: If Doing Egg Rolls or Won Tons, get your fryer ready, add your oils (turn to 350 degrees or less.) The Roll or Won Ton must be a light golden color. Add the tofu, ½ of zucchini, oregano, 5 leaves of mint, ginger, marjoram, cilantro, juice of 2 limes, pinch of salt and paper, in the food processor and mix to a creamy paste consistency. Add a little dry oregano and spin one time. Add the ½ tsp of avocado oil and just give it a very quick spin once more. Submerge spring roll wrappers in water until pliable one at a time. If using the egg rolls or won ton follow directions on the packet. (Use oils for the fryer)
Cut the tofu in small long sticks (we are using the long sticks to fill the wrappers) Spread a bit, lightly thin on the wrapper. Scoop 1 tsp of the tofu veggie paste and add tofu sticks, the julienne veggies and tofu feta. Place two or three chucks of avocado and start rolling... (See directions on the packet)

WORLD UNITED MUSIC FESTIVAL- SHUT DOWN EARLY
|
A three-day music festival billed as a fundraiser for an organization dedicated to helping came to an abrupt and early halt, leaving disappointed fans and angry vendors looking for refunds. The event, dubbed World United Music Festival had been intended to serve as the inaugural fund raiser for United States Entertainment Force, a California-based nonprofit group reportedly dedicated to helping soldiers and their families.
Organizers for the event claim that the cancellation was due to inclement weather, in particular accident that occurred on the first day due to high winds. According to the The Austin American-Statesman, Jerry Payne, the event's founder, said that he pulled the plug after a piece of the stage, dislodged by the wind, fell on some attendees, sending at least one to the hospital. However, the bands and vendors point to financial mismanagement and low attendance as the reason for the cancellation. Robert Chapman, who runs the Dallas production company that had been hired to provide lighting, audio and staging for the event, says he pulled his gear on Saturday, leaving bands performing sans P.A. when he says Payne couldn't come up with the promised $60,000. Chapman also claims that a $10,000 check he had received prior to the event bounced.
Food vendors also claim that they are out money. One vendor, Salim Daou, traveled from Virginia for the event and after paying $6,000 in expenses, including a booth fee of $1,500, he had made $300 in sales before the event was canceled. Others, such as Ray McEachern who provided 200 portable toilets for the festival, are out $13,000 The American-Statesman reported.
Some bands are out too. Many bands had agreed to play for free, with the understanding that the money raised would be used to help American combat troops, but others, such as headliners Asleep at the Wheel and Roger Creager, had been promised a fee.
For ticket refunds and vendor refunds contact the executive producer Jerry Payne at the United States Entertainment Force

THE PEOPLE OF THE CONGO ARE PLEADING FOR EUROPEAN PEACEKEEPERS TO PROTECT TERRIFIED CIVILIANS
|
Dear Friends,
The people of the Congo are pleading for European peacekeepers to protect terrified civilians. European leaders are wavering -- help launch hard-hitting ads to push them to respond: Take Action Now
The brutal war in Congo is escalating, as a terrified Congolese people plead for Europe to send peacekeepers to protect them.
(1) Today, two top experts warned that Congo looks frighteningly like Rwanda before the 1994 genocide and that only Europe can deploy a strong and neutral force fast enough to stop the bloodshed.
(2) European leaders are wavering as their council meeting approaches - we have just one week to persuade them to act. We know how to do it -- last week, Avaaz ran a hard-hitting advertisement in The Times of London, pressing UK leaders to support a European force or risk responsibility for genocide -- their Africa minister called us immediately, and their position has shifted -- the UK has moved toward supporting a European force! Now we need to take this effective ad campaign Europe-wide -- placing ads in influential newspapers in key deciding countries.
The Times ad was paid for by 300 small donations from Avaaz members. If just 3000 of us donate in the next 48 hours we can run ads across Europe before it's too late. A full page ad can cost just 6,000€ ($8,000) in a major newspaper. See the Times ad and watch a tense video demand for action we received today from a displaced woman caught in the conflict: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/congo_europe_must_act/
There are only days left to influence decision makers in Europe. Next week the agenda and positions will be determined for the European Union's Council of Ministers meeting on the 8th and 9th of December. If they fail to act now, the people of the Congo will have to wait months before the EU considers the issue again.
Our ad last week and a campaign by over 135,000 Avaaz members helped shift the British government, but we need another EU state to step up and lead the troop proposal. France will support it, but for historical reasons should not send troops.
(3) We are being told that Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain are the key countries that tip the balance. We will start by placing ads in newspapers in those countries and in the European Voice in Brussels - the most widely read newspaper by European politicians - just as EU Ambassadors decide their positions on this issue.
The UN says it will send more peacekeepers to the Congo, but the Congolese people and experts agree that UN forces have completely failed to protect civilians and require European reinforcement. This week, 44 Congolese organizations signed a letter to European leaders asking them to send peacekeepers. Their letter pleads: "We have been abandoned...We urge you to transform your kind speeches and messages into action... with each day that passes, more and more people die." Follow the link to help these desperate voices reach Europe's leaders: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/congo_europe_must_act/
The Congo has languished for too long, with unspeakable suffering. It now has a brief window of the world’s attention – let’s seize that window to bring peacekeepers who can help achieve lasting peace.
With hope, Ricken, Alice, Iain, Veronique, Paul, Graziela, Luis, Milena, Ben, Brett, Paula and the whole Avaaz team

YVAD : : Sojourner
International Recording Artist, Kevin “Yvad” Davy, once singed to Tuff Gong, premiered his new single “Preach” recently on Hype-TV (Jamaica). The video now posted on YouTube and MySpace was shot on location in Kingston Jamaica, and explores the “good guy gone bad” theme, except that it has a happy ending. Directed by newcomers Victor Simpson and Josh it features his longtime childhood friend and fellow singer Kyan, who plays the role of the villain. The enigmatic, on again, off again front man for the Wailer’s Band is throwing all efforts behind the promotion of this lead single from his long anticipated third album, Sojourner, due out early 2009. The song, recorded at Mikey Bennett’s Grafton Studios, underscores the immense talent of the Yvad who wears the hat of Producer on this track. It has been more than twelve years since Yvad entered the scene and once again, reggae aficionados and his legions of fans can look forward to a high quality album which features the likes of Clive Hunt and Wayne Armond.

Critics have hailed the CD, which features eleven original songs and four dub versions as reminiscent of the “golden age” of roots reggae. ANTHONY SELASSIE : : Rising Above
CD - Rising Above To be released on Surfing Medicine CD Release date: December 2008 Available on: ITunes & Rhapsody
Anthony Selassie is a dynamic roots reggae performer who has taken the best from reggae's tradition of great sound, and combined it with topics from today's headlines. He can rock you with a sweet ska, and then sock you with a wild nyabinghi beat. He is conscious, spiritual and talented. Selassie's original music is what Jamaican reggae is really all about. He is well known throughout the industry as a recording engineer and mixer, but his voice is what Jah (God) has given him to spread the message of reliance on the Most High and the importance of showing love for all of Jah's people. It is also the gift Jah has given him to let the world remember what great reggae music is. One listen, and you are a fan. He brings the voice of hope to people who are oppressed by the spiraling crime rate, violence, war and dislocation. His message is that trust in Jah and love and respect for one another can bring a brighter tomorrow. Selassie’s beautiful, rounded tones touch the heart and soul. His music is conscious and uplifting – virtues that have been lost in much of today’s music. Most of his recordings use live instruments and often are mixed through an analogue board to give them rich, full-bodied, warm sounds. He can be reached by phone at 876-397-6728; by e-mail at st_michael777@yahoo.com, or you can check out Selassie's web page at MySpace.com/anthonyselassie. Meek and Humble Child is a collaboration between Selassie and Chris Meredith, renowned reggae bass guitar player. Recording and mixing were done at Chris' Bust Out Studio in Kingston, Jamaica

IN LOVING GRATITUDE
Gracious JAH, in the busyness of my day, I sometimes forget to stop and thank You for all that is good in my life. My blessings are many and my heart is filled with gratitude for the gift of life, for the ability to love and be loved, for the opportunity to see the everyday wonders of creation, for sleep and water, for a mind that thinks and a body that feels.
I thank you, too, for those things in my life that are less than I would hope them to be. Things that seem challenging, unfair, or difficult. When my heart feels stretched and empty and pools of tears form in my weary eyes, still I rejoice that you are as near to me as my next breath and that in the midst of turbulence, I am growing and learning. In the silence of my soul, I thank you most of all for your unconditional and eternal love. Amen.
