SPECIAL UPDATE!
Let's Help Bring County Out of the "Shadows"

Fix your calendar, Gang. On Tuesday, July 14, the Martin County Commission is scheduled to discuss whether to support the Rivers Coalition's federal lawsuit aimed at stopping damaging discharges into the St. Lucie estuary in wet years.

Show your support at the commission at 10:30 a.m. We are asking the county to file a "friend of the court" petition favoring the lawsuit.

Commissioners had planned to discuss the issue last week but postponed the subject just hours ahead of time.

The Stuart News had called action for the petition a "no brainer" and concluded in a major editorial that:

"Commissioners need to step out of the shadows and join the cause..."

The only opposition to the county's support of the lawsuit has been based on vague fears that there could be some kind of retribution from government regarding other dealings involving the county.

That's not a valid fear, according to the Coalition's Washington attorney, Nancie Marzulla. "If anything, they (federal agencies) will respect the County for standing up and telling the Court the truth," she said.

Meanwhile, more damaging discharges may loom for the estuary after two years of little rain in the Okeechobee watershed. At this point, the lake is higher than it was on the same date in 2004, a year when more than 200 billion gallons of excessive and polluted fresh water was channeled from inland into the St. Lucie estuary by the Corps of Engineers.

Concerned citizens should make it a point to turn out Tuesday, just north of the Blake Library at 2401 SE Monterey Rd.
