THE BLISTERING COMEBACK OF REGGAE
Article by: Andrei Laskatelev

Looks like Miami prepares to steal some glory from New York’s Broadway! After successful runs in the UK and Canada the unique world-class reggae musical “The Harder They Come” takes the stage of the Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House in Florida. It’s the British theater company production premiere in the United States, but to be precise – it’s a wonderful hello from the seventies, when the legendary Jimmy Cliff movie became an international sensation. The movie tells a story of a young Caribbean guy Ivanhoe Martin  who wants to be a pop star and will do anything to achieve that, even becoming a major player in the drug trade. His success displeases the corrupt police force, and when they try to break up one of his concerts, he shoots two of them dead.

Forty years later after the movie’s triumph on the screen The Theatre Royal Stratford East gave the story a fresh start – now on the stage featuring a cast of 16 Jamaican-born performers. Not only for Jamaicans but for the whole generation of Americans it will be a walk down memory lane showcasing some of the rich history of Jamaican Reggae music and hits tunes from the original movie which have become world famous “anthems” such as “Many Rivers to Cross” and “The Harder They Come”. Opening night was also a benefit for the Jamaican Children’s Heart Fund (JCHF). The Fund which facilitates open-heart surgery for poor, needy and indigent children in Jamaica through the kind and generous work of surgeons, specialists and other medical personnel of the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Florida who travel to the reggae island once or twice per year to perform such surgeries.

In the interview for www.jamaicans.com the Executive Director of the JCHF Gwendolyn Grant mentioned, that the show is helping to put Jamaican music and culture once again on the world stage. “We are proud to be a part of this process and in a way which will also benefit the children of Jamaica.” – She said.

The Guardian reporter went even further while describing the after-show feelings: “Deserves to run longer than the rivers of Babylon.”  Well, the rivers of Babylon will run forever, “The Harder they Come” musical takes the Miami stage till September,13 only… Hurry up not to miss the biggest reggae event of this summer!

CHEF MAYRA'S: I LOVE FRESH HERBS!
I use fresh herbs of one form or another almost every day. Whether it’s adding fresh thyme to salad dressing, chopping oregano for pasta sauce, frying sage leaves for a garnish, making a unique dessert with lavender flowers or muddling mint into a mojito, fresh herbs make meals more fun, more delicious and exciting to the senses.

Sage
Sage is a perennial plant. The silver gray-green and velvety leaves come back year after year. We use the leaves in our favorite roasted cauliflower recipe, under the skin of roasted chicken and turkey, and fry them up whole in a little olive oil for a delicate crispy garnish.

Mint
Mint, also a perennial, can get out of control if you don’t keep on top if it. There are various varieties with various intensities of flavor. We have two varieties and use it mostly in the summer for beverages, in a particular chicken ( NOT) tofu salad, and sometimes when making coconut milk ice cream. Mint is also excellent as a garnish for fruit desserts (though not fried).

Oregano
Another perennial. While the oregano hasn’t gotten out of control in the garden, I do have plenty. If you need any, come on over! Oregano is an ingredient in many of our regular pasta dishes. We also have dried oregano at the end of the summer for use throughout the winter.

Rosemary
Rosemary is one of our favorite herbs. While it is not hardy in our area of the country, it can be used some places as a decorative shrub. As such, we put it in fresh every year. One of my favorite ways to use fresh rosemary branches are as skewers for grilled lamb kebabs. I also like fresh rosemary leaves in vegan pizza dough and in a favorite pasta dish.

Basil
I don’t know about you, but I cannot get enough basil. It’s an annual, and we grow a lot of it every year. There’s the pesto factor, of course, and caprese salads and sandwiches, but it’s also tasty snipped into a green salad for a little extra bite. Try it in strawberry-basil  coconut milk ice cream while you are at it.

Parsley
Chopped fresh parsley is an ingredient and/or garnish in so many dishes. We grow both flat leaf and curly parsley every year for just this regular purpose.

Lavender
Lavender is such a lovely border plant, and it has a subtle but wonderful flavor when used in culinary manner. I think I’d like to try coconut milk lavender ice cream this summer, too. I understand that lavender can be a substitute for rosemary in breads. But also be aware that a little goes a long way with lavender – better to err on the side of too little than too much.

Lavender Sugar
Lavender sugar is so easy to make and can be used in any recipe instead of regular cane sugar. This is one way to make your own original recipes. It's fun!

If you already have crushed or chopped lavender buds add about 1 tablespoon to 2 cups of cane sugar. Place in a glass jar, stir or shake to mix and store for a couple of days. The sugar will pick up the lavender scent and flavor. This keeps very well!
If you don't have your lavender buds chopped or crushed ahead , no problem. Just take about 1 cup of the sugar and the lavender and toss in your food processor or use your coffee grinder until the lavender buds are broken up.

Try this sprinkled on toast, crepes, vegan sugar cookies, or whatever your imagination can come up with. The sky is the limit! One Love!,
'Til next week……. Stay Green, Lean And Sexy…With an “Animal Free” lifestyle

Spice’s appealing brand of roots reggae is characterized by smoothly crooned, impassioned vocals that lovingly caress, as he does on his current romantic boom shot “Brown Skin”, or just as convincingly, deliver the militancy of a righteous rebel warrior on “Open the Door”, or the aura of ancestral mysticism that defines “Motherland Calling”. Guided by the principles of his Rastafarian way of life, Spice’s lyrics rail against injustices and the plight of the oppressed, implore assistance for the youth and extend maximum respect to the ladies. “My responsibility is to use the talent that God gave me as an instrument to uplift people who are facing the struggle worldwide and let them feel happy in themselves,” Spice explains. “It is all about righteousness, and endorsing the love of the people, good over evil and life over death.”

REDEMPTION OF PARADISE
The Caribbean, especially Jamaica, is well represented in the new box office movie 'Redemption Of Paradise', which had its world premiere in Jamaica on Wednesday August 19 at Weekenz, 80 Constant Spring Road, Kingston. The film features various actors, technical staff and administrators comprising the small army of dedicated professionals who worked tirelessly to midwife the Howell-directed film into life.

The truly Caribbean feel of the movie is achieved by the many nationalities, voices and influences that drive the film's narrative. The Antiguan film, produced by Dr. Howell's film company Colour Bars Film Production, was filmed mainly in Antigua featuring stars from across the Caribbean.

Flying in an international crew to Antigua to orchestrate stunts, from car chases and explosions, to cinematography as well, the team is now getting ready to premier the movie in Jamaica and Dir. Howell is extremely proud of his latest production, confident that movie goers will love every minute of it, especially with an internationally recognized Jamaican dancehall personality playing the role of heroine.

"Macka Diamond is great in her role. The audience will love her. She is not the only Jamaican involved in the movie, however, as several other Jamaicans were involved in various production aspects," director Howell said. Other Jamaicans, who are residents of the US and who live and work in New York, were also represented. Several Jamaicans who reside in Antigua also lent their expertise in the film.

"We had people from just about every single Caribbean island and that's why we placed the movie in the fictitious Paradise because all the islands are similar and we can all relate to the story," he said. All of Jamaica can head to Carib Theatre to view one of the biggest movies of the summer, produced in the Caribbean, starring big Caribbean names and produced and presented by an all-star Caribbean film crew. There are plans to release the film on a local, regional and international market.

The exciting, high impact, action drama 'Redemption Of Paradise' is a movie about vigilante justice set in the beautiful island of Paradise. What was once a safe and pleasurable island has now become plagued with violence, drugs, and gangs. Tired of the corruption that has infested her hometown, one citizen decides to take a stand. Millie (played by dancehall star Macka Diamond) forms a community watch group, which among other things encourages the local businessmen to stop paying protection money and to deter the corrupt efforts of Paradise's drug kingpin. The subplot to the movie involves a much younger Millie and a horrible twist to the story begins to unravel.

'Redemption Of Paradise' cast includes  lead Macka Diamond as Millie, Respect as Rogger, Mark as himself, Kevroy Graham as Andrew, Eldon Martin as Wicket and Junior Hart as Officer.
