Queen Omega hails from Trinidad, where she began entering local talent shows at age 9. Raised in a musical family, she grew up listening to soul artists like Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, and Whitney Houston, as well as jazz and the traditional music of Trinidad. Such foundations served her well later on; her favorites, however, were reggae and dancehall. In 2000 she met producer Mickey D and has collaborated with him on three CDs and several hit singles, which along with many well-received live performances have made Queen Omega a trailblazer for female roots reggae artists. She has developed her skill as both a singer and DJ and writes pointed lyrics inspired by a deep love of Rastafari. www.myspace.com/queenomega

Blaak Lung, a.k.a. Alan “EayGee” Gordon, grew up in the Bay Area influenced by Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, and other reggae greats as well as conscious hip-hop artists such as KRS-One. He began creating reggae, hip-hop, and dub tracks at age 13 and progressed to a 20-year career of producing conscious roots vibrations for a long list of artists. In the last few years Blaak Lung has stepped to the fore with his hard-hitting solo CDs. He describes his distinctive singing style as “EngJay,” a combination of spoken word, dub poetry, and DJing. www.blaaklung.com

A fresh new artist from Guyana, Arkaingelle unites an Afro-Caribbean perspective with a strong Rastafarian message. Though meditative, his lyrics are delivered in a blazing vocal style over deep vibrations. www.myspace.com/arkaingelle

Ashanti Hi-Fi is a project of DJ Kobie, who records his original music for Blaak Lung’s GreenSphere Records, often in dub style. www.myspace.com/ashantihifi

Lionheart Sounds has been collecting and selecting the best of current and classic roots reggae music for the past ten years. Focused on conscious and uplifting messages, Lionheart Sounds selections span the globe and have been featured in a series of highly sought after mix CDs. www.lionheartsounds.com

EARTHDANCE 2009 LAYTONVILLE, CALIFORNIA
The 13th annual Earthdance Festival will take place at the renowned Black Oak Ranch off HWY 101 in Laytonville, CA on September 25th – 27th. The ranch is also home to many well known activists and artists, including Wavy Gravy’s Camp Winnarainbow for children.

For 2009, Earthdance Northern California will unite with over 350 locations in 60 countries across the world to create the most conscious global festival of our time. The Earthdance Northern California Festival will bring together an unprecedented line-up of conscious musicians, visual artists, DJ's, speakers and activists, who believe in a sustainable future for our planet. Working with the theme of “Blessing the Children,” the festival will host 5 music stages and will feature high profile conscious artists from many genres of the international music scene, including World, Electronica, Hip Hop, Folk and Jazz.

Also included will be an indigenous elder’s council, made up of indigenous elders from many nations, who will share wisdom and sacred ceremony. Food, water, camping, and even HOT showers, are all available to festival attendees. By uniting our diverse communities through the universal platform of music and dance, the festival will send out a strong message of peace and global sustainability. Proceeds from the festival will be donated to the Earthdance non-profit, A California based 501c3 organization.

Public Property : : Work To Do
Much has been said about Public Property's Midwest origins as a white reggae band hailing from Iowa City, IA. After three albums, 3 years, and hundreds of gigs, the group no longer need defend itself from sceptics or critics who believe reggae is one color and comes from one place. Add female vocalists, a ukulele, and lyrics as controversial as Bob Marley himself, it's no wonder this band has risen so quickly in the U.S. reggae and jam scenes as one of the top nationally touring reggae acts. You'd be hard pressed to find a more confrontational and outspoken band that sounds this fun. Of the people, by the people, and for all the people, Public Property will spread its message across the country in 2009, touring throughout the Midwest and Colorado and stopping at several festivals along the way. The title track of the album, "Work To Do", features a collaborative performance with Toots from Toots and the Maytals.
Released: September 2nd, 2009

CARLOS JONES AND THE P.L.U.S. BAND : : Leave A Trail
 The long awaited follow up recording for Carlos Jones & the PLUS is finally ready to hit the streets!  Recorded with the help of Jacob Fader, leader of the Cleveland Afro-Pop group Mifune, who engineered and co-produced the recording, LEAVE A TRAIL is a collection of 12 songs written by Jones in his trademark roots-reggae style, with inspirational messages woven throughout with his warm, compelling voice. Carlos Jones & the PLUS Band has been one of the top regional draws over the last 5 years, performing at clubs, festivals, and concerts such as Cleveland House of Blues, Midwest Reggae Festival, Springfield (OH) Arts Festival, Nelson’s Ledges Quarry Park, The Tall Ships Festival, and the Kneadmore Reggae Festival.  The group attracts a widely diverse crowd, showing an almost universal demographic appeal. The group’s first release – “Roots With Culture” saw modest success as the song “Torchbearer” was picked up by XM/Sirius Satellite Radio and broadcast to a national audience. The song was also licensed to and included in a college textbook (World Music: A Global Journey/Miller & Shahriari/Routledge Publishing). Jones also had one of his tracks included in the movie trailer for the recent Matthew McConahey movie, “Surfer Dude.”
Released: August, 26th, 2009

Seefari : : Here Comes The Sun
Based on a classic reggae “Riddim” reworked and updated in post-dancehall style, Here comes the sun (featuring ijahmelody)” is the new single from SEEFARI on Upful Sound Records. The unique reggae version of the classic Beatles song is being released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original “Here comes the sun” (from the Beatles “Abbey Road” album) released in the summer of 1969. The three-track CD single/EP also includes a “DJ” version (on which SEEFARI “name-checks” each of the fab four) and a dub version. The single showcases the multi-talented SEEFARI’s skills as a singer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ/rapper and producer. The updated “rockers” style riddim anchors this remake and the classic melody is given new life through ijahmelody’s  sweet, silky harmonies. Her multi-tracked voice rides the riddim like a songbird with angel’s wings, lifting the song to higher heights! She also contributes steady hand percussion to the mix, echoing her live performances with SEEFARI. SEEFARI’s rhythmic DJ vocal will make you want to get up and dance to this sun-drenched reggae remake! LISTEN NOW @ www.myspace.com/seefari

ON THIS DAY IN REGGAE
 September 11
Ethiopian New Year
1957: Terry Ganzie (Vandorne Johnson) is born in Askenish, Hanover.
1962: Jamaica is admitted to the United Nations.

PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
