Queen Omega hails from Trinidad, where she began entering local talent shows at age 9. Raised in a musical family, she grew up listening to soul artists like Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, and Whitney Houston, as well as jazz and the traditional music of Trinidad. Such foundations served her well later on; her favorites, however, were reggae and dancehall. In 2000 she met producer Mickey D and has collaborated with him on three CDs and several hit singles, which along with many well-received live performances have made Queen Omega a trailblazer for female roots reggae artists. She has developed her skill as both a singer and DJ and writes pointed lyrics inspired by a deep love of Rastafari. www.myspace.com/queenomega

Blaak Lung, a.k.a. Alan “EayGee” Gordon, grew up in the Bay Area influenced by Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, and other reggae greats as well as conscious hip-hop artists such as KRS-One. He began creating reggae, hip-hop, and dub tracks at age 13 and progressed to a 20-year career of producing conscious roots vibrations for a long list of artists. In the last few years Blaak Lung has stepped to the fore with his hard-hitting solo CDs. He describes his distinctive singing style as “EngJay,” a combination of spoken word, dub poetry, and DJing. www.blaaklung.com

A fresh new artist from Guyana, Arkaingelle unites an Afro-Caribbean perspective with a strong Rastafarian message. Though meditative, his lyrics are delivered in a blazing vocal style over deep vibrations. www.myspace.com/arkaingelle

Ashanti Hi-Fi is a project of DJ Kobie, who records his original music for Blaak Lung’s GreenSphere Records, often in dub style. www.myspace.com/ashantihifi

Lionheart Sounds has been collecting and selecting the best of current and classic roots reggae music for the past ten years. Focused on conscious and uplifting messages, Lionheart Sounds selections span the globe and have been featured in a series of highly sought after mix CDs. www.lionheartsounds.com

TROPICAL RECORDS IS ABOUT TO RELEASE AN ALBUM BY ONE OF THE TOP REGGAE LEGENDS IN THE WORLD! MABRAK'S 'ROOTS MAN' HITS STORES OCTOBER 6TH 2009!
The drumming legend Mabrak is an icon today within the Jamaican World Music and Reggae Community and throughout the entire world of reggae music. Mabrak has single handedly carved out his legendary status in what is a career spanning decade. Mabrak was initially touted as the world music and reggae drumming champion before he started releasing his music with Tropical records. His award winning acclaimed instrumental Drum Talk CD is also being released and repackaged next month at Tropical. The label is also releasing a full length live CD, a Live Video on DVD and as a Video Download with strategic partner, Amazon (Amazon Videos On-Demand). And, Don Lichterman's world music and reggae record label is also releasing Mabrak's The Roots Man CD as a front line CD on October 6th.

Mabrak's roots music is some of the most incredible mixes of reggae and soul and his amalgamation of reggae, world, soul, R&B, dancehall, and roots rock elements into a solid sound inspired by the best artists in reggae music history. Don Lichterman, the head of Tropical Records says that Mabrak is "one of the most consistent reggae artists in the world and he really delivered a lot of incredible music to the label." "This Roots man album is a classic," says Lichterman. With the handful of reggae songs that are now being played on the radio and that are being considered for television shows and film, honestly, this is one of those albums that needs to be out for the reggae aficionado around the world." Lichterman goes onto say, "what is best about Leroy (Mabrak) is that he has already brought us live material which I love, live concert videos which is being featured at Amazon and then also an award winning instrumental album all coming out before thanksgiving his year."

"Come Sister Come" is the first single being worked to world music and radio stations around the world. "RootsMan," the song is the perfect reggae styled ballad and the entire CD recording is a cohesive classic reggae album. Mabrak's material at times is fundamental many senses and considering his repertoire, and when he is o grooving with his drums, it's very easy to see that Mabrak is obviously one of the top reggae artists in the world. Such is the case with the rest of the songs on the Roots man CD. Especially on songs like the dancehall-rhythmic "Jah Love is forever," and with songs like "Envy & Jealousy," and "Blackbird." The title track meanwhile is exceptional, like roots reggae styled song should sound like and Mabrak's soulful infused vocals and melodies are what make Mabrak the legendary reggae music artist.

This Roots Man CD is set to hit stores on October 6th and the live album and live video comes out this month on September 22. The world famous award winning Drum Talk CD will be re releases in mid November. There are also plans to release more Mabrak material before spring next year. All of the songs on the Roots man CD contain Mabrak's soulful vocals along with incredible harmonies with that subtle soul influence and even a touch of R&B. Mabrak is a classic reggae artist and his music makes up classic reggae tunes and Mabrak adds in many world music influences in the mix. (Don) Lichterman's goal is to make sure everyone knows that Mabrak is a legendary reggae music artist. And, the label is confident that his already classics will make up what is common place within the popular reggae music culture and society. There are not that many classic reggae artists that can capture the imagination like Mabrak does with his music. The music tells many stories and talks about political themes while being totally infectious. Mabrak vividly captures his life experience and captures the life of many Jamaican's working class in his accessible and timeless music.

JAMAICA: A GRIM PLACE TO BE GAY
Source: excerpted from- www.independent.co.uk/news
Jamaica's bloody reputation for violence towards homosexuals is changing it's image as a tourist destination and promoter of One Love music. In Jamaica in the last 18 months at least 33 incidents of mob violence against homosexuals have been recorded, including an attack in Montego Bay where three supposedly gay men attending a carnival were chased in the street, and one of them was beaten about the head with a manhole cover. Elsewhere, mobs have gathered outside a gay man's funeral and chased another man to his death off a pier.

Homosexual activity remains a criminal offence in Jamaica, punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment. Since 2007 Britain, the former colonial power which introduced the island's sodomy laws, has granted asylum to at least five Jamaicans on the grounds that their lives had been threatened because of their sexual orientation.

Michael, a gay man in the Jamaican capital, Kingston, said the prevalence and virulence of anti-gay sentiment in the country had made his coming out as a homosexual an impossibility. The 24-year-old, who is a member of J-FLAG but has kept his sexuality hidden from even his closest friends and family, told The Independent: "I know people who are called 'batty boy' or other taunts every time they leave home. They live in fear of being attacked. They don't know if today is the day they are going to be set upon and hacked up.

"I could not take that step. My cousins are leading members of a local church where the pastor regularly condemns gays as the devil, as subversives. If anything, we are going backwards as a nation on this issue. You cannot even feel safe reporting things to the police. I have heard too many stories of police standing aside while a gay man gets a beating, or worse. I've heard of gang members shooting a gay man in the street as some sort of rite of passage."

The literal mood music to such violence, according to campaigners, is the mushrooming of lyrics of reggae singers which glorify and lend legitimacy to homophobic sentiments. Among the performers most frequently pointed to as leading the trend is Buju Banton, a singer from one of Kingston's toughest slums, whose 1992 hit, "Boom Bye Bye", boasts of shooting gays with sub-machine guns and burning them with acid.

Another popular performer, Elephant Man, uses one song to say: "When you hear a lesbian getting raped/It's not our fault ... Two women in bed/That's two sodomites who should be dead."

The Stop Murder Music campaign in Britain and North America has brought the issue to international prominence, attempting to apply pressure on Banton and artists including Beenie Man, Sizzla and Bounty Killer, by calling for boycotts of concerts and the withdrawal of sponsorship.

A number of singers, including Beenie Man and Sizzla, have agreed to sign an undertaking not to repeat songs containing lyrics that advocate homophobia, but the effectiveness of the agreement has been brought into question after performers, including Banton, agreed to its sentiments only to then deny ever having made any such a commitment.

The Black Music Council, a UK-based group set up to defend the singers, has accused campaigners of censorship and racism by targeting musicians who are reflecting hardline views on homosexuality held across all ranks Jamaican society, from Christian churches and Rastafarian preachers to the country's parliament.

Certainly, homophobia is openly expressed in the highest echelons. Ernest Smith, an MP for the ruling Jamaica Labour Party, earlier this year used a parliamentary debate to claim that "homosexual activities seem to have taken over this country" and gay men are "abusive, violent". He added that "acts of gross indecency" between consenting gay men should be punishable by sentences of up to life imprisonment and J-FLAG, which does not disclose the location of its offices for fear of attack, should be "outlawed".

Rebecca Schleifer, of Human Rights Watch, said: "Discrimination against people based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation is widespread and entrenched. It is expressed from the pulpit to the schoolroom to the parliament. It is very important that the voices of Jamaicans who suffer this discrimination and are trying to overcome it should be heard."

BOYCOTTING 'HATE MUSIC' GETS SHOWS CANCELLED
The Lifestyle Communities Pavilion in Columbus, OH has cancelled the Oct. 3 show featuring reggae singer Buju Banton after several LGBT rights groups, including Equality Ohio and Stonewall Democrats of Central Ohio began an e-mail and Facebook campaign urging people to voice their disapproval.

Messages from Equality Ohio and the Stonewall Democrats of Central Ohio were re-posted on Facebook, denouncing the reggae musician as homophobic for song lyrics that call for the murder of gays.

The Jamaican reggae singer's music has in the past been blamed for inciting violence against LGBT's and his 1992 song Boom Bye Bye called for shooting gays with Uzis and burning their skin with acid "like an old tire wheel."

In June 2004, Banton and a gang of men broke into a house of near Banton's Kingston recording studio and viciously beat six men he claimed were gay. After complaints from international human-rights groups, Banton was finally charged, but a Jamaican judge eventually dismissed the case for lack of evidence.

PromoWest Productions currently owns and operates four of Columbus' most popular live music and entertainment venues: THE LC  Lifestyle Communities Pavilion, Newport Music Hall, The Basement and the A&R Music Bar.

Last month concert promoters Live Nation and AEG canceled shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Chicago, Las Vegas, Dallas and Houston.
As more promoters realize what the lyrical content of homophobic artists are saying, more shows will either be cancelled or not booked in the first place. Violence towards lesbian and gays has no place in One Love, One World, One Family.
