WHAT’S UP

OCTOBER 2009

Harvest Moon
October 4 @ 2:10 a.m.

Libra New Moon
October 18 @ 1:33 a.m.

Sun enters Scorpio
October 23 @ 2:44 a.m.

Saturn enters Libra
October 29 @ 1:09 p.m.

Who isn’t moved by the Harvest Moon? It is as though we can reach out and touch its voluminous, voluptuous surface. The otherworldly glow of October’s Full Moon has inspired humanity for eons. It spells the end of a season in preparation for year end celebrations. Even the air has a distinct smell as earth gives off its final fragrance before the long, cold rest of winter.

The Full Moon of October 4 is particularly potent. Yes, it has all the characteristic activity and busyness of a typical Full Moon. It also hosts a unique combination of mental alertness supporting clear communication, chance encounters, insight and sudden release. Words are blunt, to the point, and everyone agrees on one thing, it is time to make some progress. The challenges of recent months are illuminated, and stress begins to abate as the desire for freedom becomes stronger then the desire to grind an axe. With the Sun in Libra and Moon in Aries, relationships become a focal point.

As the Mercury retrograde of September wanes, it is time to proceed forward in a realistic, practical way. Mercury makes its third and final conjunction with Saturn on October 8. This trend started mid-August, making these last several months overly analytical, tense and conflictive. Old habits die hard. Solutions to long standing problems cannot be solved through words, worry and obsession, but through an open hearted willingness to see a larger view, a bigger picture. Some relief is around the corner as the first ten days October are goal oriented, determined and decisive.

When Venus joins Saturn on October 13 - 15, the heart chakra is strongly stimulated to release heaviness from the past while helping us get in touch with what really matters. You may find yourself keenly aware of the human tendency to numb feelings to defend the heart from hurt. For those willing to let go, these are days of forgiveness, purification and release. Forgiveness opens the heart to more positive feelings, and everyone wins when love is the answer. Honesty lights the way.

Venus is the planet most closely aligned with Libra. It is the planet of harmony, love, beauty, kindness and cooperation. As the Sun moves through Libra skies (September 22 - October 22) our focus turns to relationship on every level, personally, collectively, nationally and globally. The Libra New Moon on October 18th plants the seeds of a new cycle. Vying factions are more willing and able to compromise, and build bridges of understanding, rather then division. It is clear, in order to progress, teamwork is
necessary.

This brings us to Saturn. On October 29 at 1:09 p.m., Saturn leaves the zodiac sign of Virgo and enters Libra. There is a transition phase through to next summer. In the meantime, we will see many agendas fall away, as new issues surface. Where Saturn goes, so goes our attention. Saturn has been transiting Virgo skies since September 2007. The resulting focus has been on employment, or lack thereof, work environments, healthcare and personal health matters.

Now our attention turns to Libra for the next 2 year Saturn cycle (October 2009 - October 2012). Saturn is exalted in Libra, which means Saturn’s effects can function in a more positive way. Since Libra is all about how people relate, Saturn brings the gifts of   responsibility, accountability, fairness and balance into this vital area. We already see a call for more civility in the political arena. And, of course, there is an ongoing need for world peace. We will see nations form key alliances to secure prosperity and security for the global community.

However, each zodiac teacher has its downfall, its hidden challenge and teaching. In the case of Libra, there is a tendency to project blame. When this occurs, life becomes a hall of mirrors. Nowhere is this tendency more visible then in personal relationships. For those willing to see clearly, Saturn in Libra will expose and illuminate personal patterns that stand in the way of harmonious and genuine relationship. While many people will scurry to the altar over the next several years, it also a time to be keenly aware of what it takes to be in a long term partnership. Saturn in Libra has the potential to bring maturity, commitment and common sense into this fundamental area of human interaction.

Another note for October is a Mars transit into the zodiac sign of Leo. Because of a retrograde period, Mars is here for a lengthy stay, this month through to June 2010. Mars in Leo lights the fire beneath us all, but especially Leos will feel this energizing jolt. The dull and lethargic days of recent months are over. Our batteries are ready to be recharged. Leo is all about play, creativity, passion and romance. Hopefully, this is a palliative remedy for the heavy plight humanity finds itself in. Among the serious, remember to play and find your joy. Don’t let your inner critical adult interpret this urge as frivolous distraction. Let your inner child come out and play . . . spontaneous, innocent, free, trusting in life’s inherent goodness.

October concludes with Halloween, the most Scorpio of celebrations. No matter how scary it looks, beneath all the masks, there is a child at play. Taking it further, there is Divinity at play. Yogis call this Maya, the mysterious veil keeping us mortals caught in a net of illusion. Planning, controlling, thinking our ways are better than Divine Wisdom. But, beyond the veils, beyond the beyond . . . Oh! The delights Love has in store for us.
