ETALES NOVEMBER 17, 2009

surgery symbol Pardon our appearance while eTales undergoes a bit of plastic surgery. We will  be nipping, tucking and lifting in the coming weeks, but when we emerge from the  operating room we will be leaner, cleaner and handsomer. Let's hope the Botox  sticks and our luscious new lips don't go all funhouse mirror on us.

ReVoLtReVoLt RECORD RELEASE PARTY FRIDAY, NOV. 20 AT RX!

ReVoLtReVoLt will celebrate the release of Chordata with a free RX in-store performance and CD signing at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20.

ReVoLtReVoLt’s Chris Bock, Ben Brunn and Jasin Serna are all familiar faces within the Boise music scene. After a brief stint in Boston as a solo artist, Bock moved back to Boise and reconnected with Serna. The duo brought some new energy to Bock's songs and the project quickly became a joint venture. Songs were brought to the table by both musicians, and a new identity was conceived, ReVoLtReVoLt.

This new two-piece took to the road and toured the Northwest, driving hundreds of miles for weekend winter gigs throughout Idaho and Oregon. In the fall of 2008, they hooked up with bassist Ben Brunn (Nevada Bachelors) of Seattle. After a few rehearsals, it was evident that Ben’s contribution to ReVoLtReVoLt’s sound was the final piece to the puzzle.

Over the summer, the band recorded their debut full-length album with legendary Seattle producer Conrad Uno (Mudhoney, Young Fresh Fellows, Presidents of the United States of America). Chordata recalls classic Northwest guitar bands in its heavier moments and the best of '90s indie rock as the hooks and melodies pile in. Dark and brooding in spots, breezy in others, Chordata is a self-assured debut by a band just hitting their stride.

THE DUTCHESS AND THE DUKE RX IN-STORE SET FOR NOV. 21

Seattle throwback indie-folk duo The Dutchess and the Duke will perform a free RX in-store concert at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. The band will sign CDs and meet with fans following the performance.

The Dutchess and the Duke have released two critically-acclaimed albums, the most recent of which, Sunrise/Sunset, just came out in October. Drawing comparisons to heavyweights ranging from the Rolling Stones to Bob Dylan to Leonard Cohen, The Dutchess and the Duke make the sort of music that sounds informed by a great record collection and a reverence for classic singer-songwriter idioms.

Says their hometown Seattle Weekly, "By taking tonal cues from darker, acid-tinged '60s pop and sweetening it with just the right amount of meticulously constructed harmonies, they are managing to pull off one of the trickier combinations in songwriting — sounding timeless and utterly modern at the same time."

MORE NEW RECOMMENDATIONS

"[W]hen John Paul Jones got the hard-rock supersession itch, he didn't mess around. For Them Crooked Vultures, he hooks up with Dave Grohl and Josh Homme, two of Zep's smartest disciples.

"... Sometimes the music sounds exactly like Zeppelin, as on 'Reptiles,' a sly update of 'South Bound Suarez.' Other times it sounds like Queens of the Stone Age with a hot new bassist. But it's not desperately ambitious — the album sounds like the good-natured quickie it probably was. Jones plays a few keyboard solos in 'Mind Eraser, No Chaser' and 'Scumbag Blues,' and though Homme doesn't sing like Robert Plant (his upper register sounds more like Cream's Jack Bruce), he does deliver loads of Jimmy Page doppelgänger solos, just to prove he can." — Rob Sheffield, Rolling Stone

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: LE FLEUR

We really dig it when local bands put out albums on vinyl, and Le Fleur's latest platter Din Din can be found at The Record Exchange on wax (limited to 300 copies) and CD.

And it's not just the format freak in us that likes the record — the music is pretty rad, too. As demonstrated on Din Din, Le Fleur is a versatile band that can work a slow, post-rock build-up as well as a herky-jerky post-punk rhythm ala Modest Mouse — in short, an apt addition to the Northwest indie rock tradition.

"None of us have formal musical training, so our music probably has a bit of regional aesthetic to it that is a vernacular expression of who we are and how we express ourselves with music," says Le Fleur's Bryan Hallowell. "At the same time we don't cling to any specific styles. Basically we like to play rock music but do what we can to keep it interesting."

Of releasing Din Din on vinyl, Hallowell says, "It is one of those things where it is such an important accomplishment for us to make this record and vinyl almost embodies that importance better than how a CD can. The music on vinyl is tactile and has a physical presence to it. Plus we've always wanted to make an album on vinyl. It also made for a better format to have the artwork."

RX STAFF PICK OF THE WEEK

RX barista extraordinaire Emily Whitesides selected electro-rock duo The Big Pink's A Brief History of Love as her Staff Pick of the Week.

"It totally rocks," Emily says. "It's got a big sound with a contemporary kick to it."

Critics are agreeing with Emily. The Pitchfork hipsters said the album is "all loaded with the kind of unshakeable self-confidence that typically leads to daunting hype from Brit mags, ridiculously fun press quotes, and, just maybe, an album that justifies us giving a shit two months from now. As you can guess from that [8.2] score up there, A Brief History of Love is way better than it needed to be, a bracing and beat-driven debut from a label usually known for shoegaze's more cryptic qualities."
