Dread & Alive: NIGHT OF THE ANIMALS
Please feel free to check it out:

Dread & Alive (continued)

At the wheel of a 1969 Land Rover S2A, Maria headed home, eastbound on Route A1 towards Falmouth.  Trying to put the strange encounter with the higgler behind her, and eager to leave the touristic part of MoBay, Maria rolled down her window to take in the healing properties of the mountain air.  In the passenger seat, a weary Drew had fallen asleep, his head resting against his chest. Maria glanced at him, then gently brushed the locks from his eyes.

“Pay no attention to the higgler’s words,” she whispered. “None of it’s true. She’s just trying to spook you. That’s all.”

She continued along route A1, driving the narrow, winding two-lane highway with care. The view was spectacular, clear waters and fine, white sand to her left, fragrant flowering trees and rolling, palm-covered hills to her right. To Maria, the north coast was perhaps the most beautiful in the world.

Keeping within the speed limit, she passed a yellow road sign alerting her of a sharp curve in the road just ahead. She wisely sounded the horn, in hopes of warning any oncoming traffic of her presence. As she rounded the curve, a moped carrying a young couple zoomed by, barely missing the Land Rover. But Maria swerved in time to avoid an accident. Thankful that she was able to maintain control of the truck, a heavy sigh of relief escaped her parted lips. She looked into her rear view mirror and watched the moped disappear from sight.  Still shaken from the thought of a possible accident, she glanced at Drew, smiled and laid a hand on his head, then drove even slower the rest of the way.

Twenty minutes later, she arrived home; a quaint one-story cottage tucked away near the bank of the Martha Brea River. Parking the Land Rover in the gravel driveway, she unfastened her seatbelt and opened her door from the outside, slipped out and walked around to the rear of the truck where she unloaded the basket of produce.  Then she attended to Drew. Balancing him in one arm, he stayed asleep on her shoulder as she carried the basket of produce across the walkway to the front porch. But as Maria climbed the stairs, she noticed something unusual about the house. The front door was open.

“That’s strange,” she thought, pausing for a moment on the porch.
She looked both ways but found everything in its place.  She shrugged. Then, with her foot, pushed open the front door.

“Philip?” she called, her voice thin and trembling.  There was no answer.
Hesitantly, she entered. Once inside, she looked around expecting to see some disarray but everything appeared to be in perfect order. The living room and dining room were deserted, the only movement coming from the ceiling fan.  Setting the basket of produce on the hardwood floor, Maria gently laid Drew on the sofa and covered him with a quilted blanket. As she placed a throw pillow under his head, she noticed there was something out of the ordinary. The telephone had been left off the stand. She slowly picked up the receiver and placed it to her ear. The line was open. After a few taps of the talk button, she heard a dial tone and breathed a little easier. But where was Philip? She placed the receiver back in its stand, took a deep breath, picked up the basket of fruit and headed down the hallway toward the kitchen.

When she was near the kitchen entrance, a shadow moving across the hardwood floor directly in front of her caught her eye.  It was quick and brief, but it was there. Maria froze. "Philip?" she called out.

THE ITALS' DAVID ISAACS PASSES
David Isaacs of The Itals has passed. David passed away from a heart attack during the night of December 21st 2009. He was in Kingston sleeping on the floor because he had given a guest his bed. His sister went to ask for his clothes to wash and realized immediately he had passed away. David was supposed to be on Rebel Salute in January.

Isaacs recorded a version of Stevie Wonder's "A Place In The Sun" in 1968 for producer Lee Perry, and this was one of the records that established Trojan Records as a major force in reggae. The song was re-recorded for Isaacs' debut album, Place In The Sun, released in 1976. In 1979, Isaacs recorded "Just Like The Sea", in combination with deejay Jah Thomas, and released a second album, More Love, produced by Witty Reid. In 1982, he teamed up with Winston "Niney" Holness for the album Happy Ending, released on Dynamic Sounds, which had been preceded by the Love & Devotion set.

He will be missed by the RFG family.

BUJU GRAMMY NOMINATION STILL STANDS
Buju Grammy nomination stands C/O www.jamaica-star.com
Krista Henry, Staff Reporter

As singer Buju Banton awaits his fate in jail in Tampa, Florida, he won't have to worry that his recent Grammy nomination is under threat.

Banton, born Mark Myrie, was nominated this year for 'Best Reggae Album' for his ninth studio album, Rasta Got Soul; alongside acts such as Sean Paul, Gregory Isaacs, Stephen and Julian Marley. Since his arrest earlier this month on federal drug charges in the United States, persons have been speculating that Banton's Grammy nomination may be withdrawn.

When THE WEEKEND STAR contacted Roger Steffens, reggae archivist, lecturer, editor, producer and co-chairman of the Reggae Grammy Committee, he confirmed that Banton's nomination will not be rescinded. He said, "no they wouldn't do that, it's strictly based on music and not personal characteristics."

According to Steffens the Grammys has had a history of musicians who have been nominated and have won, that have been at one point or another convicted of a crime. Rappers such as Lil Wayne and TI, among others, have been nominated while facing felony charges and arrests.

Steffens elaborated, "if you look at the history of the Grammys, murderers, thieves, rapists have all made Grammy categories. Some blues singers spent half their lives in jail and still made it. We try to be above it."

As to how Banton's chances for a win at the 52nd Grammy Awards stand, Steffens says it depends on the "consciences" of the persons voting. The Grammy Awards are presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States (NARAS) and consists of musicians, producers, recording engineers and other recording professionals.

Currently, over 6,000 professionals comprise the Producers & Engineers Wing, a membership division of NARAS which was established for producers, engineers, remixers, technologists, and other related creative and technical professionals. The members of this division vote on the Grammy Awards each year.

Earlier in the month, members of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) urged musicians to sign a petition protesting Banton's Grammy Award nomination. A release from the Recording Academy later stated, however, that they would not remove Banton's nomination.

VP RECORDS PRESENTS: THE RETURN OF REGGAE CROONER SANCHEZ WITH HIS NEWEST ALBUM, NOW AND FOREVER
c/o www.sflcn.com

On Febuary 9, 2010 VP Records presents the return of Sanchez with his newest album, 'Now And Forever'. Now and Forever features 15 new Sanchez tracks, produced by Donovan Germain of Penthouse Recordings. This is by far Sanchez’s best work to date. Along with delivering the sound that he is known for, the majority of this album contains original songs from Sanchez.

The first single from Now and Forever is “Longing To Come Home” on the Protect & Serve riddim, it is currently climbing the US world & reggae charts. “Won’t Surrender” touches on the controversial subject matter of infidelity and what an untrusting companion goes through in this situation. On the song “What Do I Have To Say,” Sanchez is trying to capture the attention of a woman that he is attracted to. “Release the Property” is about the elusive quality that the one you’re pursuing possesses. Sanchez goes on to explain the elements that draws him to a woman. The songs “Who Am I Without You,” “Extraordinary” and the title track ‘Now and Forever’ displays the loving and sensitivity that proves why Sanchez is one of the most beloved Lovers Rock Singers in Reggae Music. NOW AND FOREVER is classic Sanchez.

IT’S A GRAMMY AFFAIR AT JAMAICA JAZZ AND BLUES 2010

It will be a Grammy Affair at the Caribbean’s best musical festival this January – the 2010 Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival – as acts like Gladys Knight, Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds, Billy Ocean, Erykah Badu, Third World and The Whispers, take to the main stage in Trelawny, Jamaica.

The line-up of the 14th staging of the annual event recently expanded with the addition of multiple Grammy-winners, ‘Babyface’ and Erykah Badu.

Babyface will take to the stage on Thursday January 28th at The Greenfield Stadium in Trelawny along with The Whispers, Joss Stone, Jon Secada, Robin Banks and Joe Roy Jackson. Babyface has won over 10 Grammys for hits like “Two Occasions,” “Never Keeping Secrets” and “For The Cool In You.”

On Friday, January 29th, fans can get ready for Erykah Badu, Billy Ocean, Machel Montano and the Queens Project – featuring Tamia, Kelly Price and Deborah Cox. Badu is sure to thrill the Jamaican audience with hits like “Tyrone,” “Bag Lady” and “Didn’t Cha Know?” while Ocean, Montano and the Queens Project are sure to keep things jumping.

The festival wraps up on Saturday January 30th with the Empress of Soul, Gladys Knight along with Third World, Hall & Oates, Monty Alexander and Marion Hall.

The addition of two top tier acts was precipitated by the unavailability of Jennifer Hudson for the Festival. Hudson was forced to cancel her confirmed appearance to accept an invitation from senior music executive Clive Davis to perform at the Grammy Awards.
“The date for the Grammy Awards had to be moved up, due to the Winter Olympics,” explained Festival Executive Producer Walter Elmore. “Changes in schedules are sometimes unavoidable, but they are also opportunities,” Elmore said of the revised line-up.
In a statement, her representatives indicated that, “Jennifer is very much looking forward to performing at next year’s festival as she is unable to perform for the 2010 event due to scheduling conflict.”

The 2010 staging of the JAMAICA Jazz and Blues Festival will be a seven-day long celebration of The Art of Music that will see Montego Bay engulfed in the awesome sights and sounds of the Turn Key Productions event from January 24-30.

Jamaica Jazz festival officials are urging all music fans in the U.S., U.K. and Canada to give themselves an early Christmas gift now by booking a package to the festival to experience the sights, sounds and magic of sunny Jamaica, West Indies.

Hotel rates are available from as low as US$46 per person or US$92 for single occupancy and most hotels will offer shuttle service to the venue.

Tickets and packages are available at www.jamaicajazzandblues.com or by calling your favorite travel agent.

Jamaica Jazz since its introduction in 1996 was known as the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival. It has attracted thousands of patrons from the USA, Europe, the Caribbean and Jamaica. International artistes that have performed at the festival include Diana Ross, Alicia Keys, Kenny Rogers, Kool & the Gang, Brian McKnight, Erykah Badu and Michael Bolton among others.

This year the festival is again being presented by key title sponsor, the Jamaica Tourist Board. Other sponsors include Air Jamaica, Iberostar, Rose Hall Resort, CVM TV and The Gleaner Company among others.

AFTER 28 YEARS 'THE BEAT' DOES NOT GO ON
Howard Campbell, Gleaner Writer

The Beat magazine out of Los Angeles, which showcased the reggae and world beat scene for nearly 30 years, has ceased publication.

In a statement dated December 20, CC Smith, the magazine's minister of information, cited economic challenges and the transformation of the literary landscape as the main reasons for its closure.

"The Beat was unique and it is really a miracle it survived as long as it did. But the precipitous decline in the music business, publishing business and the economy has finally caught up with us," Smith said.

The Beat was founded in 1982 as 'Reggae Beat' by reggae historian Roger Steffens and operated throughout as a bi-monthly with a volunteer staff that included Smith. Its initial name came from the Los Angeles radio programme Steffens hosted.

Steffens and Smith were largely responsible for the first edition of The Beat in May 1982. It covered LA's Bob Marley day activities that month, and for its duration reported extensively on the reggae festival scene in southern California.

World beat performers

The Beat also covered world beat performers including Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade of Nigeria and Ladysmith Black Mambazo of South Africa. Among its popular annual features was a Bob Marley Collectors Edition.

In an interview with The Gleaner, Steffens commented on The Beat's departure from magazine stands.

"To me, seeing The Beat fade away after 28 years is very sad, but I suppose inevitable. We are witnessing the collapse of print media of all kinds today, swept away on the slippery slope of virtuality," Steffens said.

In her statement, Smith said it is unlikely The Beat will follow other publications by launching an Internet edition.

"Many people have suggested taking The Beat online to save it, but the advertising support is just not there," she said.

She stated that another factor contributed to the decision not to carry on. "The music, reggae in particular, has changed so much since the early days when it was new, fun and inspiring. There is so much less to say about it now."

In August they performed at Beenie Man, Sizzle at the National Stadium in Kingston in front of a crowd of 15,000. A few days later Roots Revealers appeared as guests and sang live on Hype TV’s “Up and Live” and during the same week shot the video for “Sweetie Come Brush Me” featuring Chaka Demus, directed by Nordia Rose and with special appearance by Carl Bradshaw. This track will be the first single from their album, “Sweet Jamaica” set for release later this year. “Texas-born siblings Roots Revealers have managed to...create a unique sound, which has been creating a stir in the reggae music industry world-wide…their debut album, Sweet Jamaica…shows their versatility and deep rooted knowledge of the reggae genre.” Chat Magazine 08-11-2009 Kingston, “Texas Reggae artistes Roots Revealers showed true class…” X-News 03-28-2008 Kingston, JA “Reggae artistes Roots Revealers were among those who shined bright during their time in the spotlight…”.

KEHV:
SIMPLY KEHV: Debut Album
Kehv, dubbed the Prince of Reggae Soul, stands tall with the release of his official debut album entitled “Simply KEHV.” Released on the label, Impressionist Music, this debut highlights the different styles of Kehv and displays the naked truth of his versatile vocal ability.

In case you haven’t heard of Kehv, then you’ve got some catching up to do. Kehv has been bubbling on the music scene since his earlier recordings in 1995.  Born in the Parish of St. Ann, Jamaica, Kehv is strongly influenced by reggae, but also has a love for R&B. He proclaims his form of artistry as being a blending of the two with an infusion of hip-hop; producing the sound, he and his team call “Reggae Soul.”

Growing up in Jamaica, Kehv’s musical career began at the early age of ten in the church choir. With no formal training, he blossomed from singing to writing or co-writing almost every song and mastered both the guitar and the piano. After migrating to the United States and settling in Miami FL, Kehv recorded his first single "Half Way There" in 1995.  With the demand from his audience for more music highlighting his beautiful vocals and masterful playing skills, Kehv continued to write, perform and release new music every chance he got. On radio stations all over South Florida and Jamaica his latest singles "Distant Lover", "Hear You Say", and “Take This Higher” can now be heard, while some of his other songs are blowing up on internet radio stations here in the United States, and as far as Canada and the UK.

Labeled as an indie artist on Myspace Music, a new artist by Partyspree.com, and a local artist at home in Miami, Kehv has surpassed all of these titles by working with superstars such as Kymani Marley, Wyclef Jean, and Tony Kelly.  He has also shared the stage with international artists such as Beenie Man, Shaggy, Sean Kingston and Derrick Morgan of Morgan Heritage, and has performed on major network stations BET and MTV.

Kehv recently performed, in celebration of the completion of his album, at Miami’s premiere hot spot the Grass Restaurant and Lounge to a packed house. Superstars such as Kymani Marley, radio personality Vanessa James and many others were in attendance to support this talented artist on the rise!

With the release of his debut album Simply KEHV, now available worldwide on all digital outlet stores, Kehv has made available to his fans the music they have been clamoring for. This CD has all the ingredients to satisfy completely all music lovers.  Roots rockas will fill up conscious riddims, reggae heads will rock away, and those who just like good music will quickly catch the two and four downbeats. This “fresh face” on the scene has truly put in the time and effort and Simply KEHV does not and will not disappoint.

According to top40-charts.net, "with his humble demeanor, spiritual awareness, and unquestionable talent, the music fraternity as well as the fans would be wise to take a look at this fresh face coming your way. His name is Kehv. Blessed from birth!"

Stan Evans Smith, of the West Indian Times says “Kehv relates his life experiences through his music…”

Stacy Lee-Williams of Kingleopromotions says "take a listen and you will instantly become a fan."

JANUARY 1 - Kwanzaa, the seventh day: Imani (Faith)
The core message and expansive meaning of Kwanzaa is rooted in its role as a rightful and joyous celebration of family, community and culture. Indeed, it is a celebration of a people in the rich and complex course of their daily lives and in the midst of their awesome and transformative movement thru human history. It is a holiday that grew out of the ancient origins of first-fruit harvest festivals which celebrate the abundant good of life and all living things and the good of earth itself and all in it. It rises also out of our modern struggle for an inclusive freedom, a substantive justice, a dignity-affirming equality, and a life-enhancing power of our people over our destiny and daily lives. And it bears the mark and message of both models and movements.
