BIG PLANS FOR REGGAE FILM FESTIVAL 2010
THE Reggae Film Festival 2010 at the Hilton Kingston, produced by film-maker and film festival organiser Barbara Blake Hannah, will open February 25 with a Red Carpet Gala Reception and screening of the documentary Made in Jamaica. This features a galaxy of reggae stars including Capleton, Bunny Wailers, Third World, Beenie Man and Lady Saw, all of whom are among the VIP reggae celebrities invited as special guests.

The Hilton Ballroom will be transformed into a cinema for nightly screenings, while the Jonkanoo Lounge will host lunchtime screenings, a seminar and a special children's programme. The Hilton Kingston offers a special Reggae Film Festival accommodation package and will also offer lunchtime specials for midday cinema-goers.

Films already entered include several premieres by Jamaican and international directors, including entries from Hawaii, Italy, Japan, UK and Brazil. Awards will be presented by a panel of judges in nine categories, including Best Film, Best Documentary and Best Music Video, and audiences will be invited to select their favourites.

Several international celebrities have been invited to attend, including Spike Lee, rapper/actress Eve and Roger Guenevere Smith, star of Jamaican feature Betta Mus' Come and eight Spike Lee films, as well as the blockbuster American Gangster, starring Denzel Washington. The noted actor will present a lecture with film clips as part of the festival's programme.

The Reggae Film Festival 2010 is produced by a planning committee of the Jamaica Film Academy, comprising Mikey Barnett, Dr Michael Barnett, Lloyd Laing, Teddy Laidley, Lesley-Ann Welsh and UK film archivist Peter Gittins.

Jamaica will have more than one festival of reggae films in Reggae Month, as the Reggae Film Festival 2010 will be preceded by a film series presented by the JARIA Reggae Month Committee. The JARIA film series is co-ordinated by Marjorie Scott-Anderson, organiser of the Songwriters Bootcamp, under Reggae Month Committee chairman Charles Campbell. Funding for JARIA is by the European Union PSDP programme, while the Reggae Film Festival 2010 is sponsored by Jamaican private sector companies.

When asked why she had not co-ordinated the Reggae Film Festival 2010 with the JARIA programme, Blake-Hannah said that it was when she called the committee chairman Campbell to see if the dates planned for the RFF 2010 would clash with anything else planned, that he informed her that JARIA was already planning its own film festival.

She said that since the first Reggae Film Festival in 2008, there have been many spinoffs, with festival film winners being invited to international events and winning awards. Film festivals and people around the world, including Jamaica, have begun including reggae films in their programmes or presenting look-alike events, but these all have served to achieve the main objective of the Jamaica Film Academy, which is to promote Jamaican film culture, which is what the JFA set out to do.

Nevertheless, she said she was surprised that the Jamaican reggae music industry thought so little of her efforts to promote the industry through film, that they went ahead with similar plans without inviting her to assist, but felt there was no turning back on her plans to give Jamaica another Reggae Film Festival.

Blake-Hannah, who presented Jamaica's first film festival in 1974 and has produced several more since, has been a guest of international film festivals in Venice, Iraq and Cannes. She has produced several films of her own and worked on The Harder They Come, A High Wind in Jamaica and Kla$h. She conceptualised the first Reggae Film Festival as a special project while she worked as consultant to the minister of information, culture, youth & sports, and assisted with the setting up, planning and procedures for declaring and presenting the first Reggae Month in 2008.

The Reggae Film Festival is a privately funded activity of the Jamaica Film Academy. The JFA's aim is to see the festival become an annual date in Jamaica's events calendar that will provide Jamaican films with the needed international exposure that they deserve. The Reggae Film Festival has already seen four different films made as a direct result of its first event in 2008 and two films winning international awards, evidence of just how important this event is.

THE 9TH EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Dread & Alive (continued from last week)

..."Is that so?  Is is good or bad news?"
"I don’t know too much. Cuffee said there was trouble in Accompong.”
"So what does Cudjoe want with you?
"He wants me to come back to the village. There have been some unexplained deaths in the village and their resources have been dwindling over the years.”
"Do you really have to go?"
"If I don’t go, then more people will die. They are a proud tribe. I must help.”
As the discussion grew heated, Drew quietly tried to follow the conversation, his eyes moving from Maria to Philip as he tried to understand the conflict. Of course his father should go.
"You know, we just moved here from Kingston. Don’t you think it would be better if we stayed here awhile before running off again?” Maria paused, remembering the words of the higgler from the crafts market.
Philip read Maria’s face. “Is something troubling you?”
"No…," Maria said, slowly.
Philip shrugged.  "I know this is unexpected but it’s something that I have to do.” He stopped and took a drink from his glass while carefully avoiding her eyes. He did not want to read disappointment there.
"Well, if you’re going, then we’re all going as a family."
A gasp of relief escaped his lips. "I was hoping you would say that. You are so patient with me Maria."
"Aren’t you forgetting something? What about Drew?  He has school.”
"I thought about that. We can teach him ourselves. We’re not going to be there forever. Besides, just think of the education he will get from living in the rain forest," Philip said, glancing at Drew.
Drew smiled at his dad, then turned his charm on his mother. He could think of nothing more exciting than living in Accompong.
"Well, it seems as if you’ve already made up your mind me. So when do we leave?"
Philip didn't answer. He picked up the napkin and began wiping his hands before setting it back on the table.  Maria played with her food, waiting for an answer. “When are we leaving?" she persisted.
Philip took a deep breath. "At firstlight."
Maria's sigh was one of resignation. She looked at her husband. "Then we better get moving. That doesn’t give us much time."
Philip rose from his chair and moved to place his hands on Maria's shoulders. "I know that all this moving around is hard for you. But this is different and it won’t be for that long. Six months, a year at the most. We get the village back to normal and then we come home. I promise.”
Silently, Maria stared at him before she said, "Okay, but this is the last time. After this, we settle down and give Drew a proper life."
"I'll do whatever you think is good for Drew.” Philip kissed Maria on the cheek, patted Drew on the head and quickly left the dining room before she could change her mind.  Maria watched him go.
"Mama, is everything okay?"  Drew asked, flashing a tight-lipped smile.
Maria looked at her son. "Everything’s fine," she assured him, tousling his hair. "Everything is just fine."

MUSIC INDUSTRY PLEDGES HAITIAN SUPPORT
The local entertainment fraternity has embraced the Haitian cause, with musicians and promoters galvanising monetary aid and necessary items to be sent to the country, following the devastating earthquake on Tuesday evening.

In the aftermath of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake which shook Haiti causing major loss of life and damage islandwide, members of the entertainment fraternity in Jamaica are pledging their assistance in a variety of ways.

Songtress Raine Seville who is co-founder of the One Touch Charity Organisation says they have felt moved to do all they can to support Haiti. After the incident Seville, alongside the charity's president and founder, Sophronia McKenzie, spoke to a variety of persons who have pledged their assistance under the One Touch Banner.

She said, "so far we've gotten assistance from the Rotaract Club of St Andrew, promoter PJ Wright of Wright Image, producer TJ White, Bugle, Fed Ex, S&A Beautique, Coca Cola and Lascelles, among others, are giving us items such as food, clothes, medicines, soap and disinfectants, among other necessities."

She added, "One Touch Charity aims to touch lives of people who are less fortunate and in need of help, right now that applies to Haiti."

Steve Urchin of Brand New Machine alongside superstar Sean Paul, also plan to assist the Haitian cause. He says, "basically we (BNM) put on a weekly event at Fiction as well as celebrity birthday parties there called 'Paparazzi'. Last year we did birthday parties for Jay Will, myself and Farenheit and they select a charity to which the proceeds would go towards. We held a Paparazzi edition for Sean Paul who celebrated his birthday last Friday, and proceeds from the entrance fee will go towards Haiti."

According to Urchin, Sean Paul had not officially decided on a charity for the proceeds to go towards and after the earthquake on Tuesday, he received a call from him saying that the Haitians needed any assistance they could get.

Urchin was also contacted by Scotia Bank who have set up an account for donations and the proceeds from Paparazzi will be lodged to that account. Also on hand for the night will be a 'drop box', organised by Carlene Samuels, assistant to director Jay Will, where persons can donate needed items.

When THE STAR spoke with Tony Rebel, promoter of Pepsi Rebel Salute, he was in a meeting with Pepsi's Marketing Manager Denise Dixon and daughter Jahyudah Barrett, finalising how the show would help the earthquake survivors. He said, "We're trying to see how we can dedicate 30 minutes or an hour of the concert to the people of Haiti. A part of the performance will be dedicated to them and we'll collect funds from patrons willing to donate."

The Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival as well as the Coca Cola presents 'Sean Kingston in Concert' are also adding their support.

TurnKey Productions, producers of the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, have introduced a food-relief programme to assist the victims of the earthquake. Working with local agencies, TurnKey will collect and package non-perishable food items from patrons attending the annual festival for delivery to the impoverished nation.

Walter Elmore of Turnkey Productions in a release stated, "the precise details of our drive are still being developed. We have just initiated dialogue with local authorities, who, like the rest of the world, are experiencing challenges in communicating with Haitian officials."

According to a release sent from Coke Zero, every dollar generated from the Coke Zero concert to be held on Saturday January 16, will be donated to relief funds. The company will also be setting up pledge tents at the Coke Zero concert and the efforts will be with the aid of the Food for the Poor.

Coca-Cola Country Manager, Chris Hardy said, "Literally, every last dollar generated will be donated to the relief efforts. From the $100 that persons paid over to Mother's and Burger King to redeem tickets, to every dollar collected at the gate for the event, proceeds from drink sales, everything we will just hand over to Food for the Poor for them to activate our support and get aid to the persons who need it most."

Also in a release sent to THE STAR, Beenie Man claims to have been deeply moved by the devastation that was caused by the earthquake. In the release Beenie Man says that he has pledged to lend his artistic skills in any way to help raise funds.

VIVIAN JACKSON DIES AT 63
Producer, recording artist was force in '70s reggae
By CHRISTOPHER MORRIS

Jamaican producer and recording artist Vivian Jackson, who became a power on the Kingston roots reggae scene of the '70s under the moniker Yabby You, died after suffering an aneurysm on Jan. 12. He was 63.

Reared in poverty, Jackson was stricken at 17 with arthritis, which would force him to walk on crutches later in life. As a youth he worked as a potter and a racetrack tout.

In 1971, he formed a group, the Prophets with bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett (of Lee Perry's Upsetters and the Wailers), guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith, and drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace. Though he grew his hair in the tangled dreadlocks favored by Rastafarian religious cultists, his devout Christianity was reflected in his lyrics, earning him the nickname "Jesus Dread."

Jackson's breakthrough came in 1972, when he cut "Conquering Lion" on free studio time granted by legendary producer Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock. The song became a hit in Jamaica, and its vocal refrain -- "be-you, yabby yabby you" -- was foreshortened into his professional handle.

The tune's tough rhythm track was transformed into technologically manipulated "dub" by King Tubby and a "toast" -- a rap -- by top DJ Big Youth. It was recut as "Lord of Lords" by Jackson's teenage protégé Wayne Wade in 1976. The "Conquering Lion" album of 1975 was equally popular, and its limited dub edition "King Tubby's Prophecy of Dub" became a much-coveted collector's item.

Yabby You's 1978 album "Deliver Me From My Enemies" helped him attain U.K. stardom at the height of roots reggae's popularity there.

He worked extensively as a producer with other gifted Jamaican talents, including DJs Dillinger, Trinity and Tappa Zukie and singers like founding Black Uhuru member Michael Rose and Willi Williams, originator of the Clash's hit "Armagideon Time."

Yabby You gained wider recognition via a series of handsomely produced collections of his vintage work issued by Blood & Fire Records in the U.K. during the '90s.

BIGGA HAITIAN AND WALKUP RECORDS TO DONATE ALL PROCEEDS FROM DOWNLOADS OF “I AM A HAITIAN” TO EARTHQUAKE RELIEF
Following the earthquake that struck near Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, Walkup Records and veteran reggae artist Bigga Haitian have announced that they will donate all proceeds from online sales of “I Am A Haitian” from his forthcoming CD, Sak Pasé to Yéle Haiti to assist in the relief efforts in Haiti.

Of the current situation in Haiti, Bigga says, “I feel like I need to do something and this is what I have to offer.” “It is a tragedy, so many people suffering. I haven’t been able to get through to family down there.”

Reggae artist Bigga Haitian was born 'Charles Dorismond' in Haiti to a musical family. His father, Andre Dorismond was a pioneer of Kompa music with the Webert Sico Group. Bigga moved to the United States as a child but has always exhibited his love for his native country in his music, starting with his first song over twenty years ago, 'Haiti A Weh Mi From' and continuing through today with 'I Am A Haitian.'

Bigga’s concerns are both national and personal: “It is a tragedy, so many people suffering. I haven’t been able to get through to family down there.” Walkup Records co-founder Brett Smith added, “Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this disaster. We are humbled to join with Bigga in his efforts on behalf of the Haitian people.” 'I Am A Haitian' is currently available for digital download at iTunes, eMusic, Rhapsody – anywhere music is sold online. All proceeds from sales of this track will go directly to the relief effort.

For additional information on Bigga Haitian and Sak Pasé, promo requests, or to set up an interview, contact Brett Smith or visit www.biggahaitian.com. Sak Pasé on CD can be pre-ordered at Amazon.com prior to its February 9, 2010 release.

Bigga Haitian has been blazing up the stage for more than 20 years, appearing with reggae legends including Shabba Ranks, Beenie Man, Sizzla, Capleton, Cocoa Tea, Junior Reid, Shaggy, Collie Buddz, and Buju Banton and is known as the first Haitian singer to break into the Jamaican reggae scene, tearing down national and cultural walls and paving the way for the next generation of Haitian artists.

Walkup Records is a New York-based independent music production and services company founded in 2006 by music industry veterans and childhood friends, Brett Smith and Marc Lawrence. Conceived during a jam in Brett Smith’s 4th floor walkup apartment, just up the block from the original Fillmore East in New York City's East Village, Walkup Records stands for a commitment to high quality music played by real musicians, and a determination to do things the right way.

CLIFF ROCKS! - JAMAICA SINGER DONATES MEMORABILIA TO HALL OF FAME AHEAD OF INDUCTION
source: Gleaner

Jimmy Cliff is humbled by his upcoming induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. - photo by Barbara Ellington

On March 15, Jamaica will have another illustrious musician in the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And this one is still alive to enjoy it. The other Jamaican, reggae icon Bob Marley, was inducted in 1994, many years after he had died.

After the lengthy voting process, singer/actor/songwriter Jimmy Cliff got the call; he had been selected among the final five nominees for this year's induction into the American Hall Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. The other inductees are Abba Genesis, The Hollies and The Stoogies.

The Sunday Gleaner caught up with Cliff in his first local interview since the announcement when he visited Jamaica briefly last week to collect personal items requested of him for his display in the Cleveland, Ohio-based Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum. The items, all originals, will be there for one year in the first instance, but he can replace them with copies for a permanent exhibit thereafter.

But how did Cliff feel upon learning that he would be sharing company with musical giants like Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklyn, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Paul Simon, among scores more?

"I am humbled, it is an honour for Jamaica, such a tiny country in the world, and especially at a time when there have been so many negatives in some sections of the music industry. I am also heartened that I am the second Jamaican to get the honour and I am still alive to receive it," he said. But Cliff also reflected that it was just another stepping stone along the many rivers he still has to cross.

The news was relayed to him last month while he was in New York on business by his wife, Latifa, who had received it at home in France by email. Cliff revealed that he thinks it was meant to be at this time and he is encouraged and excited about what it can do to help in the promotion of his upcoming CD that is now in the final production stages.

But in true Jamaican fashion, Cliff did not leave it all up to chance or votes. He revealed to The Sunday Gleaner that in October he telephoned his Brazilian friend, who is reputed to have strong intuitive powers, and asked how she felt about his chances of making it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"She told me to consider it an honour and when I asked her why it was happening now, she said it was October and since I was speaking to her at that time, it meant that the selectors were also discussing it at the same time, so she did not see why I should not be considered," he said. At that point, he reminded himself about the number of outstanding musicians who had been nominated several times before making it and did not think much about it again.

Cliff said that in his subsequent discussions with officials from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame organisation, they wanted to get accurate background information about him. "They wanted to get their facts straight, such as my exact place of birth in Jamaica; my stints in the Boys Scouts and 4-H Club camps, plus when and where I first sang the Elvis Presley and Fats Domino songs and so on."

ERROL KERR SKIS FOR JAMAICA IN VANCOUVER’S 2010 WINTER GAMES!
February will welcome Jamaica’s skiing debut in a Winter Olympiad.  Just as the Jamaican Bobsled team blazed a new trail in Calgary’s ’88 Winter Games, so too now will Errol Kerr pioneer, as Jamaica’s first skier in a Winter Olympics.

Born of a Jamaican father and American mother, Errol was groomed for competition on Squaw Valley’s race program. Since his childhood, his love of the Caribbean island spawned dreams of representing Jamaica in international competition. As his alpine race skills grew, he realized the sport may be the avenue to fulfill his dreams. An invitation from the US Ski and Snowboard Association helped make his decision and chart his Jamaican journey.

Errol has incredibly diverse talent on the slopes. He’s competitive at an almost unheard-of discipline range including: giant slalom, downhill, slalom, super-G, super combined, and skier cross. Not only does Errol have the athleticism to race in such a wide variety of disciplines, his talent is such that he has a real shot of medaling in skier cross. He is one to watch on the road to Vancouver.

In the winter of 2007- 2008, he was the youngest of four athletes invited on the first U.S. Skier Cross Team that includes ex-World Cup skiers like Casey Pucket, Jake Fiala and Spyder-sponsored Daron Rahlves. After considering the US call, he ultimately declined, opting instead to place his focus on Jamaica, and set out to make reality happen. Errol, his coach Raul Guisado, ski technician Eric Holmer, operations director Pat Andrews and mother Catherine Kerr constructed the team under the direction of the Jamaican Ski Federation. The US Skier Cross invitation upped the ante of his competitiveness, and instead of solely focusing on alpine events, Errol decided to throw skier cross into his repertoire. Now, not only had he made the decision to carry the weight of a national team, he increased his competitive breadth beyond most athlete’s simple consideration. Errol's ready to rock the nation.

Watch out for Errol Kerr in the coming Winter Olympic Games.  The first scheduled men’s alpine event is Men’s Downhill on February 13th, from BC’s Whistler Mountain, Vancouver, Canada.

JAH's Prayer - A Man Is Still A Man
Artist: Morgan Heritage
Yeah!
A man is still a man
Whether him wear jacket and tie or him walk bear foot
The only difference is whether him good or evil, oh
A man is still a man
Whether him rich or poor, black or white for sure
The only difference is whether him good or evil

Listen friends
See lots of different people
Live in the streets and wipe car glass window
This is what they do day to day
Just to get a little food to eat
Oh yeah,
And then you have others
Wearing suit and tie
Work a good nine to five
And take it for granted that they living a better life
I say the colour of our skin
Dont mean a thing
If we do good or commit a sin
We all judged by the same JAH in his holly name
So lets all be aware of how we entertain angels on our way
For angel do move through man
Whether here or from there

A man is still a man
Whether him wear jacket and tie or him walk bear foot
The only difference is whether him good or evil, oh
A man is still a man
Whether him rich or poor, black or white for sure
The only difference is whether him good or evil

Never matter creed or race
For the welfare of a man
We should all live in love
We treat all man right
For we all are the same
In the most Highs eyes

A man is still a man
Whether him wear jacket and tie or him walk bear foot
The only difference is whether him good or evil, oh
A man is still a man
Whether him rich or poor, black or white for sure
The only difference is whether him good or evil

Hear this words again
Lots of different people
Live in the streets and wipe car glass window
This is what they do day to day
Just to get a little food to eat
And then you have others
Wearing suit and tie
Work a good nine to five
And take it for granted that they living a better life

A man is still a man
Whether him wear jacket and tie or him walk bear foot
The only difference is whether him good or evil, oh
A man is still a man
Whether him rich or poor, black or white for sure
The only difference is whether him good or evil
