Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, installment, click here to read:

"Why her?" Philip asked, trying to hold back his tears. "She’s a good woman."
"Who knows why these things happen.”
"Please," Philip begged, clutching his arm.  "Can’t you do something for her."
"There’s nothing we can do for her.”
Cudjoe made awkward attempts to comfort Philip but this was broken by the emergence of the midwife from inside the hut. Before she spoke, the two men knew the only news was that which they did not want to hear.
"I’m afraid she’s left us," the midwife said, bowing her head in grief."
Philip, teary-eyed, just shook his head in disbelief.  He had no words.
"I’m sorry," Cudjoe said, placing a hand on Philip's shoulder, trying in vain to comfort him.
Silently, Philip stared out into the blackness of the jungle, unaware of the tears streaming down his face.

*******
Head lowered, Philip slowly removed his glasses and wiped the few remaining tears from his eyes. Though the years had long passed, he still found it very difficult to think about Beneba ... there was no way he could put her behind him. Replacing his glasses, he picked up the Polaroid, unaware that Maria was standing in the doorway to his den.
"What are you doing?" she asked, quietly.
Startled, Philip turned his head. "Huh?  Oh, nothing." He tucked the Polaroid inside his shirt pocket. "I’m just looking through some old journals."
Maria approached Philip, crouching behind him and placing her arms lovingly around his chest. "I’ve gathered all of Drew’s things for the trip ... well, at least what I think he’ll need. Are you going to pack?"
"Yeah, I’m just about ready to pack a few bags. Remember, don’t take all your belongings. Just the necessities.”
"Sure." Maria laughed. "I’m going to get Drew ready for bed. He’s got a long journey ahead of him. Are you coming to say goodnight?"
"I’ll be there in a minute."
Philip waited for Maria to leave before retrieving the Polaroid from his pocket. Staring at the photo one last time, he reluctantly tucked it into its plastic protector before placing the album inside the box.  Closing the lid, and shoved it back in place, putting closure to this sad chapter of his life.
Meanwhile, inside Drew's bedroom, Maria sat on the bed beside him and listened as he recited his prayers. With eyes closed and hands folded, Drew said, “An' God, please take care of my mom and dad, and take care of my grandma and grandpa."”
"Don't forget all the people in the world," Maria added.
"Okay … and I pray for all the people all over the world. Amen." Drew looked up at his mother and winked.
Maria smiled. "That’s a good boy.  Now, off to bed you go."
She helped Drew into bed, tickling him as she tucked him underneath the sheets, just as Philip entered the room. He knelt next to his son, about to wish him goodnight, when Drew asked him a question.
            "Who are the Maroons?"

TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR THE BOB MARLEY MOVEMENT CARIBBEAN FESTIVAL, AT BAYFRONT PARK IN DOWNTOWN MIAMI
By Arielle Castillo
Thumbnail image for jahfebenthacker.jpg
Jahfe is among the local acts scheduled to perform.

The 17th Annual Bob Marley Movement Caribbean Festival sure has expanded since its relatively humble beginnings at Bayfront Park. (Remember a seeming million years ago when tickets were like $10 plus a couple cans of food?) Take that name -- quite a mouthful (though everyone still colloquially refers to it as "Marley Fest").

Then, there are the number of sponsors. The official full tagline of the event is "1-800-411-PAIN presents Bob Marley Movements 17th Annual Caribbean Festival and Food Drive, brought to you by 103 The Beat and www.caviny.com." Whew! (And these 411-PAIN people are relentless!)

Luckily though, that expansion also includes the entertainment. Every year's edition of the festival has brought some major stars in reggae/Caribbean music. So far, this year those include, of course, several Marley sons: Stephen, Damian, and Julian. Shaggy, Capleton, and Tarrus Riley also headline.

Local acts include the excellent Miami-based roots reggae act Jahfe, the multiculti Deerfield Beach act the Resolvers, and, in a move that makes little genre sense, Broward's Vega Under Fire. Not to knock the band, but they're a pretty straightforward power-pop-rock act; nothing Caribbean about them.

In any event, the festival has, through the years, remained devoted to charity and collecting those cans of food, so this year is no exception. Tickets are $42 plus a required four cans of food (yay).

Half of the collected cans will go to the Bob Marley Movement's relief partners in Haiti. The other half will go to Curly House, "an organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for low-to-moderate income individuals and families, the elderly, youth-at-risk, the abused, and HIV/AIDS infected members of the community."

The 17th Annual Bob Marley Movement Caribbean Festival. Saturday, February 27. Bayfront Park, 301 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. Doors open at 2 p.m. bobmarleymovement.com; 305-740-7344

CHEF MAYRA’S - WHIPPED CREAM - GLOBULES AND FAT
The inventor of butter must have been an interesting person. Who else would shake a bunch of cream until the arms would shake no more, just to see what would happen? And who would keep going after the cream had whipped into the delight we put on top of pies and sundaes for dessert?

Whipping cream is cream that contains at least 30% milk fat. Cream that has less than 30% fat will not whip. Heavy cream can contain up to 40% milk fat, and is sometimes used for whipping.

The structure of whipped cream is quite complex. A coating of milk protein surrounds small globules of milk fat, containing solid and liquid fats. These globules stack into chains and nets around air bubbles. The air bubbles are also formed from the milk proteins, which form a thin membrane around the air pockets.

The three dimensional network of joined fat globules and protein films stabilizes the foam, keeping the whipped cream stiff.

Whipped cream additives

Additives are sometimes added to whipping cream to make it easier to incorporate more air, or to make it more stable, so the foam lasts longer. Chief among the stabilizers are carrageenan and emulsifiers such as glycerol monostearate (a monoglyceride) and related compounds called diglycerides.

Carageenan is a gelling agent that forms a complex with the milk proteins, adding bulk and strength. A small amount will make a large difference in the ability to hold air in the foam.

Mono and diglycerides replace some of the proteins in the coating around the fat globules. This lets the globules partially fuse together, to form the chains and networks that make up the three dimensional structure of the foam. There are natually occuring mono and diglycerides in milk and cream, but adding more makes the whipped cream last longer and helps achieve higher volume.

Sweeteners such as sugar and corn syrup are added for taste, but they also participate in the structure of the foam, and in the weight of the final product.

Natural and artificial flavors are also added, usually in the form of vanilla extract or synthetic vanillin or ethyl vanillin.

Propellant in canned whipping cream
In canned whipping cream, the gas nitrous oxide is used as a propellant and whipping agent. Nitrous oxide under pressure dissolves in the fats in the cream, and comes out of solution (like fizzing carbon dioxide in a soda) when the pressure is released. The bubbles of nitrous oxide whip the cream into a foam instantly.

“REVELATION” NEW ALBUM FROM LEGENDARY PRODUCER LEE “SCRATCH” PERRY
MEGAWAVE today announced an August 10th release date for the newest album from Lee “Scratch” Perry, to be titled “REVELATION”.

This will be the third of a series of collaborations with UK multi-instrumentalist Steve Marshall.  Recording of the final tracks began at Lee’s mountain-top studio in Switzerland last October, at the same time that a documentary film was being produced, according to label president John Palmer.  “The sessions had a life of their own and new directions were introduced from what had been planned.  The Biblical reference of its title track was a natural choice for the album.  And again, I expect that we will have some great guest artists to announce as we complete this 12-song project in the next few weeks.”

REVELATION follows the controversial SCRATCH CAME, SCRATCH SAW, SCRATCH CONQUERED, featuring Keith Richards, George Clinton, Reuben White, Tim Hill, Erica Iji, Mark Mason and Sheridan Tandy, and the Grammy® nominated THE END OF AN AMERICAN DREAM, all on the MEGAWAVE label.

Lansing, Michigan-based MEGAWAVE Records (“Small label—Big sound”) was founded in 1972 and specializes in jazz, world, reggae, and piano blues music.  It is distributed in North America by MVD Entertainment Group, in Europe by Music Alliance Membran GmbH, and digitally worldwide by Independent Online Distribution Alliance (IODA).

MISHKA SETS RELEASE OF BUTCH WALKER PRODUCED ALBUM
Named 2009's Best New Artist by digital music leader iTunes, j.k. livin artist Mishka releases his new album, "Talk About," on March 30th 2010.

Mega-producer Butch Walker (Pete Yorn, Pink, Fall Out Boy) infuses some of his mainstream melodies on two of the tracks for the much-anticipated sophomore album.

Setting the tone for the self-described "album of movement," the lead single "Bittersweet" began as a studio experiment before evolving into a musical space that surprised even its creator. "When I brought the song to the band it was extremely raw—just a few chords and a couple lyrics played at a modest tempo," says Mishka. "But as we started jamming on it, it started to move into an up-tempo track like I've never recorded before—a place, musically, that is brand new to me."

Two of the tracks on "Talk About", "Stars Will Be Shining" and album opener "Give Them Love," are the product of collaboration with super producer Butch Walker. The pair was introduced by label owner, album co-producer, and Hollywood icon Matthew McConaughey. "This is an album of movement—of stepping outside the box of traditional folk-reggae and adding a real mainstream rock influence," says Mishka. "Butch works fast—he works efficiently—and he knows how to cultivate those rock tones in the artists he works with." The album's 13 tracks span a distinct ebb-and-flow, from the fast paced and up-beat first half to a more mellow and introspective second half.

"In the days of the LP, this would definitely be an A-side/B-side type record," Mishka commented. The title track, "Talk About," explores the imbalance of words versus action—a lyrical theme that runs through much of Mishka's work. "People make statements about love, equality, and peace and then try to measure their quantity in instant gratification," he explains. "Whereas those things are really about a long-term way of life where all your actions—not words—add up." Mishka's 2009 release, "Above the Bones," debuted at #1 on the Billboard Reggae Charts last February and was followed by an exhaustive world tour. Mishka then provided the soundtrack for summer with two features of his soulful island melodies: a music video for the title track, featuring the iconic Venice Beach Boardwalk, that premiered across the Yahoo! Entertainment network in June, and a selection by Starbucks Entertainment and iTunes for their music discovery program, "Pick of the Week," that was available at Starbucks locations nationwide.

EXPECTATIONS HIGH FOR REGGAE MONTH IN JAMAICA
With limited funding, Reggae Month has kicked off but expectations are still high for new Committee Chairman Charles Campbell.

"It's a challenge to do any kind of event, much less a whole month of events, without adequate sponsorship," Campbell told The Sunday Gleaner.

"I see it as a challenge but not a problem because the fraternity has bonded together and provided all sorts of support."

He said the Government has promised to provide technical support and he is still hoping to receive some form of sponsorship from the Jamaica Tourist Board. Unlike previous years, Reggae Month this year is being planned by industry players and not the government.

Last year's Reggae Month committee chairman, Howard McIntosh, pointed out that "a significant amount of funding is required to make this year more successful than last year".

Planning for this year's celebration, he said, began as early as last May when the new committee was set up. "The committee was put in place early to give them a longer time to plan. The success of the planning efforts will be shown in how things turn out this year," McIntosh said.

Through collaborations with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission, Jamaica Reggae Industry Association, Jamaica Association of Vintage Artistes and Affiliates (JAVAA), the film industry and several other organisations, a wide range of activities have been scheduled for Reggae Month.

There will be a Dennis Brown Tribute and a Reggae Month Kick-Off Street Party and Concert in downtown Kingston. Throughout the month, there will be events such as a church service, bus tour to Trench Town, JAVAA Tribute to the king and crowned prince, Bob Marley Day, Prime Minister's Reception, Reggae Month Film Series, Annual Bob Marley Lecture, Global Reggae Studies Conference, Fi Wi Sinting, Reggae Month Free Concert, Honour Awards, Jamaica Day and Reggae Village Negril.

The month will also be saluted at weekly events such as Passa Passa, Uptown Mondays and Weddy Weddy. In addition, it will be saluted by Rae Town, Christopher's Jazz Café, Merritone Disco, Jamaica Poetry Society and Jamnesia. The EME Awards and RE TV Awards are also on the calendar of events.
Campbell said he expects the month to go well.

"My expectations are to lay the foundation for Reggae Month to continue to highlight the best that Jamaica has to offer and consolidate that Jamaica is the musical Mecca of the Caribbean," he said.

The One Love Festival takes place every year in August and is the UK’s Number 1 Reggae Camping Festival, nominated for 3 Festival Awards in 2009 (Best Small Festival, Family Festival Award and Best Toilets).

About the original One Love Concert (1978):
The One Love Peace Concert was a large concert held on April 22nd, 1978, at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. This concert was held during a political civil war in Jamaica between opposing parties; Jamaican Labour Party and the People’s National Party. The concert came to its peak during Bob Marley & The Wailers’ performance of “Jammin”, when Marley joined the hands of political rivals, Michael Manley (PNP) and Edward Seaga (JLP).

Bob Marley said the following as he called the two politicians onstage and held their hands above his head: “His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie, I run lightning, leading the people of the slaves to shake hands. . . To show the people that you love them right, to show the people that you gonna unite, show the people that you're over bright, show the people that everything is all right. Watch, watch, watch, what you're doing, because. . I'm not so good at talking but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. I'm trying to say, could we have, could we have, up here onstage here the presence of Mr. Michael Manley and Mr. Edward Seaga. I just want to shake hands and show the people that we're gonna unite . . . we're gonna unite . . . we've got to unite . . . The moon is high over my head, and I give my love instead. The moon is high over my head, and I give my love instead.”

DAILY AFFIRMATIONS - February 12, 2010
A continuous realization of the divine Presence is the pivotal element in experiencing the kind of life you desire. When you consistently envelop yourself in a spiritual atmosphere, you align your inner being with right action.

Fulfillment, joy, peace, and abundance are available to you when you consciously embrace these ideas, constructively directing your thoughts. Daily affirmations help you to do this.

Devote at least 15 minutes, preferably when you are alone and in a quiet place, to each day's Affirmation. Read the paragraph for content, simply being aware of the idea it expresses. Then study it more deeply, allowing your thinking to be challenged, stimulated, or enhanced. Finally, close your eyes, meditate deeply on its meaning, and let it become a part of you.

"Today, I use my creative heart to convey my gratitude and appreciation, in wild and wonderful words for all the expressions of love on the planet of my life."
