Athens v. Sparta v. Texas State
Junior Classical League Andrew Reinhard April 27, 2010 It took 27 years for Athens to fall to Sparta, but only one night for the San Antonio-based band, Athens v. Sparta, to conquer Texas with a live performance of its 59-minute opus, The History of the Peloponnesian War.
On March 26, 2010, indie rock outfit Athens v. Sparta, led by Classics-educated lawyer Charlie Roadman, played the Texas State Junior Classical League’s annual convention to initial surprise and then acclaim.
Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, hosted the conference and provided the space for the band to play: the school cafeteria. Undeterred by the venue, the band made the best of things, turning one end of the cafeteria into a 7-foot tall stage replete with lights and black banners sporting yellow columns.
By the end of the concert, students were raving about the band and their musical approach to the history first communicated by Thucydides and Xenophon.
