COME TO RIVERS COALITION MEETING JUNE 24 TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE NEW INVASION OF NASTY BLUE-GREEN ALGAE
"Just What Is that Bloomin' Blue-Green Algae Anyway?"

That's the subject of a presentation that all river advocates will want to hear at the June 24 meeting of the Rivers Coalition.

As citizens painfully know, the blue-green algae has returned on a sporadic basis and is expected to remain as an unwelcome visitor for much of the summer. Ugh.

Todd Reinhold, environmental supervisor with the Martin County Health Dept., will talk about the toxic algae, and answer key questions concerning this particular bacteria.

The algae, which can be extremely dangerous to humans and pets as well as wildlife, is triggered and conveyed by buildups of warm fresh water laden with excess nutrients. That's exactly the circumstances we suffer due to large releases from Lake Okeechobee into the St. Lucie Canal and then into our estuary at the floodgates off the South Fork of the St. Lucie River.

Recent blooms of the algae are first major outbreaks since 2005, when we were blanketed by the slimy green alien.

We'll have the green light on for you (pun intended) at 11 a.m. June 24 at Stuart City Hall. There's plenty of free parking nearby, and even coffee and donuts await you.
