REGGAE RISING CANCELED - HUMBOLDT COUNTY’S ONLY SUMMER REGGAE FESTIVAL HITS BENBOW LAKE JULY 17 & 18

What: 26th annual Reggae On The River
Where: Benbow Lake State Recreation Area (Benbow, CA)
When: Saturday & Sunday, July 17-18, 2010
Why: Internationally renowned celebration of reggae & world music!

As news spreads about the cancellation of Reggae Rising Music Festival’s Humboldt County permit, the Mateel Community Center, owners/ organizers of Reggae On The River, are now gearing up to present Humboldt’s one and only summer reggae festival on July 17th and 18th at Benbow Lake State Recreation Area in Garberville, CA.

Long celebrated as one of the world’s premier showcases of reggae music, Reggae On The River has been an iconic destination for reggae fans for over a quarter century, a tradition which is still running strong today.

Growing from humble grassroots beginnings and blossoming into one of the largest and most renowned festivals in the world, the event endured a forced cancellation in 2007 and revived as a single day celebration in 2008 and 2009. Now making a triumphant return to a 2-day festival for 2010, Mateel Community Center is excited to be gaining major ground in reclaiming the great Reggae On The River tradition and the reggae massive is responding in force.
Though smaller in size, the 26th annual Reggae On The River offers up a better opportunity to soak up the unique Southern Humboldt community vibe while still featuring a top class line-up of reggae and world music artists including Sly & Robbie, Don Carlos, Antibalas, Dezarie, Sugar Minott, Rootz Underground, Sister Carol, Pablo Moses, Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca, Fire Pashon, Messenjah Selah, Rob Symeonn, Quinto Sol, Tchiya Amet, and Seed N Soil, plus DJs, 60+ vending booths, a lively kid zone, and so much more.

Tickets are going fast, but are still available online at www.reggaeontheriver.com and at the usual Humboldt and Mendocino County outlets. The 2-day festival pass is $85 in advance and single day tickets are $50. Advance tickets are strongly encouraged as this event is likely to sell out. Admission at the gate, if available, will be $90 for the 2-day pass or $55 per day.

Festival camping is still also available at Cook’s Valley Campground and reservations can be made via the camping link at www.reggaeontheriver.com.
For the daily line-ups, artist bios, parking and shuttle details, a downloadable version of the program guide, and other pertinent festival tidbits, visit www.reggaeontheriver.com and don’t miss the 26th annual Reggae On The River on July 17th and 18th.

CALIFORNIA WORLDFEST WELCOMES ZIGGY MARLEY
THIS TIME ROUND-JAMAICAN SONGSTRESS READY TO TELL HER STORY

The time for Alrica’s highly anticipated sophomore CD release (This Time Round-The Untold Stories) is finally here and she will be performing with a live band to celebrate. The party will be held at Harlem’s legendary Shrine World Music located at 2271 Adam Clayton Powell JR Blvd. NY, NY from 9:00pm to 11:00pm on August 21st, 2010. Admission for this event is free.

Alrica’s vocal style is a unique blend of rich soul and reggae fused with jazz and hip hop. Onstage, she is a truly breathtaking performer. Her debut CD, an EP entitled This Time Round generated excitement from fans and music connoisseurs worldwide.  Audiences were impressed with her ability to transition smoothly from the soulful sound of tracks such as Just one Time and Journey for Love to more dance floor ready tracks such as Move and Ooh La La. In an interview with Liberating Style Magazine, Alrica stated, “I feel comfortable in both lanes, but I prefer singing the slower songs that really allow me to experiment lyrically and touch a certain place emotionally.”

Alrica is finally ready to fill in the gaps and share the stories that her fans had not been privy to in her debut release. Her sophomore release, This Time Round-The Untold Stories includes all of the best tracks from her debut album as well as seven new songs. Infidelity, broken hearts and economic suffering, only begin to scratch the surface of the subject matter Alrica shares with her audience. Music critics who have had the opportunity to preview the album are particularly impressed with the strong emotional connection Alrica continually exudes in her delivery.

The bill for Alrica’s CD release party on August 21st 2010 includes other great acts such as Barbudan Reggae Artist JR Dread, singer Shae Fiol and Jewish Reggae sensation, Benny Bwoy. JR Dread and Shae Fiol both took part in the creation of This Time Round-The Untold Stories and will be performing on their own as well as alongside Alrica in songs from the album.

THE 33rd EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:

Chapter Nine

Morning came early for the Jamaican Maroons, much to Drew's surprise and displeasure.  As the villagers moved about Accompong performing their daily activities, a sleepy-eyed Drew could have slept a few more hours. Sitting upright in his bed, he squinted his eyes at the twinkling shafts of sunlight filtering through the entrance to the hut. He was alone. Philip had risen before daybreak to join a select group of warriors for a day of hunting in the rainforest. Maria, too, had awaken early to help Juba and several other women prepare food in the Kindah for the stirring village.
As Drew lay on the hard mattress, he continued to stare at the hut entrance, watching the dancing shadows left behind by villagers walking past his hut. Their hustle and bustle, and the sound of children playing, seemed to excite him. He found himself suddenly awake.
Eager to investigate, Drew scrambled out of bed and pulled on his boots. With one laced, and beginning to tie the other, he looked up when he heard Maria's distinctive voice outside the hut. His mother, dressed in the familiar khakis, today also wore a colorful scarf given to her by one of the women of the village.
"Ahhh, Drew. You’re finally up. Good morning," she said, crouching beside him. "Did you sleep well?"
"I guess so," a still-weary Drew said, rubbing sleep from his eyes.
"You guess so? What do you mean?"
Standing upright and rubbing his bottom, Drew glanced down at the rough mattress. "That bed was awful hard to sleep on!" drew said, pouting.
Maria laughed. "Ah, yes.  My bed was a bit hard too. It’s going to take some time for us to get used to living here. But we’re strong. We’ll manage," she said, running her hand through his locks. "Come, now. There’s food for you at the Kindah."
Drew smiled, then followed his mother out of the hut.  When they reached the Kindah, Maria led Drew through the crowd of villagers, taking him to a Dogwood tree where a group of children were eating porridge. The branches of the tree provided a great relief from the scorching sun.  Maria looked on as Drew quietly sat, resting his back against the tree.  He was sitting slightly outside the group of children.
"Don’t you go anywhere," Maria said.  "I’ll be right back."
            "Okay," Drew smiled.
Drew watched his mother disappear into the crowd before turning his attention to the group of children beside him. He was still feeling uneasy in their company, unable to remember the faces, never mind the names. As he studied each child, he suddenly recognized one of the boys: Cuffee.
Drew remembered Cuffee as the boy who visited his father in Mo'Bay. He was busy eating, and Drew continued to watch him until Cuffee, drawn by some strange inner sense, looked up and saw him. The boys stared at each other, neither speaking to break the silent gaze between them. Suddenly, Maria returned and the trance-like connection was broken.

JULIAN MARLEY, SON OF THE LEGENDARY BOB MARLEY, ONE LOVE FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE CONFIRMED!
Julian Marley – son of the Legendary Bob Marley, approached the One Love Festival expressing his interest in performing at this year’s event which celebrates his father’s infamous 1978 One Love Concert. It is with great honour that on behalf of the One Love Festival Team I can confirm Julian Marley will be playing an exclusive Saturday night set on our One Love Stage,

Julian Marley has been blessed by his father’s great talent, from a young age music has been his life, at the age of only five he cut his first demo tape, recording a version of his father's classic composition, "Slave Driver," at the Marley family's Tuff Gong studio in Kingston. Since that auspicious beginning, Julian has devoted himself to a life in music, mastering a variety of instruments and writing songs that reflect his dedication to spiritual upliftment and social change. Three albums later Julian has toured the world, both as a solo performer backed by his Uprising Band and as a member of Ghetto Youths International, a musical collective whose core members are Julian and his brothers, Stephen and Damian. Stephen and Damian Marley have both contribute to his new album “Awake” that Julian will perform with the Uprising Band at this years One Love Festival alongside some of his fathers Classics in the Spirit of his father Bob Marley.

One Love Festival was born as the UK’s 30th Anniversary celebration of Bob Marleys famous 1978 One Love Concert. Where Thirty-two years ago Bob Marley performed at the first One Love Peace Concert in Kingston. It was held during a political civil war between the Jamaican Labour Party and the People's National Party and it peaked during Marley & The Wailers' performance of Jammin, when the singer joined the hands of political rivals, Michael Manley (PNP) and Edward Seaga (JLP) accompanied by a flash of lighting and clap of thunder from the heavens. Following the concert the opposing factions having seen that their leaders weren't hell bent on killing each other cooled down the conflict and eased the erupting civil war.

Festival Organiser, Dan Wiltshire, commented One Love Festival is now in its 3rd year and is so honoured the Son of Bob Marley to not only acknowledge our festival but ask to perform has just blown me away. Julian will be representing his father memory and spirit at this years event. We originally put this event on to raise awareness of Bob Marley’s message 3yrs later we actually have a Marley performing. It is something we could only have dreamed of and we feel truly honoured to have Julian Marley performing. Its going to be a truly amazing and memorable show and we can’t wait”

About the original One Love Concert (1978):
The One Love Peace Concert was a large concert held on April 22nd, 1978, at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. This concert was held during a political civil war in Jamaica between opposing parties; Jamaican Labour Party and the People’s National Party. The concert came to its peak during Bob Marley & The Wailers’ performance of “Jammin”, when Marley joined the hands of political rivals, Michael Manley (PNP) and Edward Seaga (JLP).

Bob Marley said the following as he called the two politicians onstage and held their hands above his head: “His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie, I run lightning, leading the people of the slaves to shake hands. . . To show the people that you love them right, to show the people that you gonna unite, show the people that you’re over bright, show the people that everything is all right. Watch, watch, watch, what you’re doing, because. . I’m not so good at talking but I hope you understand what I’m trying to say. I’m trying to say, could we have, could we have, up here onstage here the presence of Mr. Michael Manley and Mr. Edward Seaga. I just want to shake hands and show the people that we’re gonna unite . . . we’re gonna unite . . . we’ve got to unite . . . The moon is high over my head, and I give my love instead. The moon is high over my head, and I give my love instead.”

All Rebel Rockers, Michael Franti’s most recent album, features the legendary production team of Sly & Robbie and reinforces Franti’s place as a global force and a true musician of his time. The first single, “Say Hey (I Love You)” is fast becoming one of the biggest of Franti’s career. It’s one of the most added records at multiple radio formats--Top 40, Hot AC and Alternative--and its music video has already exceeded 1 million views on YouTube. As for the CD, All Rebel Rockers marked Franti’s highest Billboard Top 200 Album Chart debut ever.

Through his entire musical career to date, Franti has continued to slowly but surely build an extremely dedicated global grass roots following. He’s done it with a new spin on an old fashioned way. He’s earned his fans, one winning concert at a time. Ultimately what unites Franti’s remarkable and impressive career is, ironically, the man’s ongoing search for harmony.
“As a musician and a man, I more than anything else want to be a unifier,” Franti explains. “I want to bring people together through music and its unique power. And I hope that somehow that sense of unity extends beyond the music.”

Flobots, who previously headlined their own show at the Knitting Factory Reno, are returning as direct support to Michael Franti and Spearhead.  The Denver, Colorado-based musical collective are known for their battle-hardened, groove-fusing rhythm section, their classically-trained violist, and a sound that explores and expands the frontiers of live hip-hop.  Influenced by progressive rappers such as the Roots and Common as well as alternative hard rock bands like Rage Against the Machine and Tool, Flobots are visionary in both style and message.  The band’s ability to drop from symphonic rock-infused crescendos into stripped-down string-laden breakbeats has earned them a reputation for both originality and authenticity.
