On Tuesday October 12, 2010 Juno Award winning artist/drummer Odel Johnson will release his second full-length CD entitled Redemption. The hard-hitting Roots Rock Reggae CD is available for pre-orders now on www.odeljohnson.com .
Described by Splash Magazine as “The forcefulness of Peter Tosh - wrapped with the messages of Bob Marley”, Odel returns with his first full-length release since his highly acclaimed, Juno Nominated solo debut Mind & Body Sold.
On why he chose the name Redemption for his new album, Odel explains, “When I was writing the songs for Mind & Body Sold the U.S. was in war times, but now, writing Redemption, the economy has caused a shift in people towards being more conscious and community oriented so I see it as a time of redemption.” Written and arranged by Odel and recorded live at Metalworks studio in Toronto by legendary engineer ‘The Scientest’, Redemption shines from beginning to end.
From “Chronicles”, a classic roots reggae track reminiscent of days past, to the hard-hitting, straight up rock on the feature track “Testify”, mixed with a classic rock ballad on “Change”, this album will satisfy a variety of musical tastes. Redemption is produced by Obelisk Music on Odel’s label Ohm Grown Records and is available worldwide courtesy of Equal Distribution. NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH
|
|
THE 39th EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:
Cudjoe approached Philip. “Take your family and go back to the village.
“What about you?” Philip asked.
“I must have a world with Quaco.”
“But?”
“In private. Please. Go.”
Philip took a deep breath. “Alright. We’ll see you back at the village.” Philip joined Maria, each holding Drew’s hand and followed the warriors back to the village.
“Is something wrong,” Maria asked, glancing back at Cudjoe as he stood alongside ShadowCatcher.
“No. Cudjoe wants to have a word with Quaco. Alone.”
Maria stopped and turned around. She waved to Cudjoe and said, “Thank you!”
Cudjoe acknowledge her by nodding his head. He then watched them for a moment, waiting until the group was well out of sight before beginning his conversation with Quaco. There was an awkward moment of silence between the two men as they stood apart, Cudjoe looking down at the soiled ground while ShadowCatcher stared out into the impeding darkness.
“What brings you out tonight, Quaco?” Cudjoe asked, a slight hesitation in his voice.
The mention of the name Quaco caused ShadowCatcher to turn around and face his brother. His eyes, shaded by his hood.
“Quaco?” he hissed. “I’m afraid Quaco no longer exists. He died when you cast him from the village. How quickly you forget.”
“As the village chief, it is my duty to protect our people by any means necessary.”
“But of course,” ShadowCatcher hissed. You forget. I too, once ruled the village.”
Cudjoe shook his head in disgust. “You know it’s not too late for you to come back to Accompong,” Cudjoe said, hoping Quaco would change his mind.
“And give you that satisfaction? Never! What you did to me, I can never forgive nor forget.”
“Very well, then.” Cudjoe said. Feeling that the conversation with his brother was over, he turned around and began walking away.
ShadowCatcher, not wanting to let Cudjoe have the last word, called to the village chief. “It’s not over! I will get my revenge!”
Cudjoe continued to walked along the trail, refusing to look back at ShadowCatcher or acknowledge his remarks. His actions only angered ShadowCatcher.
“It’s inevitable,” he bellowed. “My return to power is coming. And not even you will be able to stop me!!” ShadowCatcher snarled with anger.
ShadowCatcher watched his brother disappear into the forest. He then turned around and lifted his head enough to reveal his eyes that looked like two glaring yellow orbs.
“Watch your back,” he hissed. “In the Cockpit Country, things are always what they seem,” he grinned.

THE FIRST SINGLE FROM THE UPCOMING EASY STAR DEBUT ALBUM BY SINGER/SONGWRITER CAS HALEY IS AVAILABLE ON ITUNES
|
|
The first single from the upcoming Easy Star debut album by singer/songwriter Cas Haley is available on iTunes, Amazon and other digital retailers. The single features three tracks: the single itself, "Better," along with a reggae remix by our own Michael G and a non-album bonus track, a live version of Peter Tosh’s "Legalize It."
The full 13 song album, Connection, can be pre-ordered (release date is Sept 14) on iTunes, Amazon or at Easystar.com.
Cas first came to national attention in 2007 as a contestant on the second season of the television show America’s Got Talent, where he finished in second place and, in the process, garnered a huge audience of fans. Cas’s debut album, which came out quickly to capitalize on the success of AGT, sold over 30,000 units in the US without a marketing campaign or extensive distribution. For Connection, Cas wanted to make a timeless album so he retreated to his home town of Paris, Texas, and took two years to create a record that honestly represented who he is as an artist. The process was long, but Cas has emerged with a strong musical statement.
For Easy Star, the leading U.S.-based independent reggae label, Connection continues an evolution of the company. “We have been stretching further from being strictly a roots-reggae-only label for a while, with progressive bands and artists like John Brown’s Body, Tommy T and The Black Seeds on the roster,” says Easy Star CEO Eric Smith. “Cas’s sound is unique, accessible, and a great way to keep expanding the Easy Star audience. And it’s not often we come across a singer-songwriter this talented, regardless of genre, so we had to work with Cas.” The label’s musical director, Michael Goldwasser, remixed a version of the single “Better” in a hardcore roots reggae style, which is being included as a bonus track. www.easystar.com

CHEF MAYRA - MORE VEGAN ICE CREAM RECIPES
|
|
Vanilla Delight Since vanilla is the staple of all ice cream (IMHO), I had to include it on my site. Who doesn't love vanilla?? **If you do not have a coffee grinder so just added the vanilla beans to the blender with everything else and it worked fine. It just added a little more texture!
Ingredients: · 2 vanilla beans · 2 cups cashews or pieces · 2 cups purified water · 1 cup maple syrup
Directions: 1.Grind vanilla beans in a blender or coffee grinder 2.Combine vanilla and remaining ingredients in a blender. 3.Pour into an ice cream maker and freeze according to instructions.
Chocolate Ice Cream For all you chocolate lovers out there, this one's for you! I actually used cacao powder in place of the cocoa powder. I think carob powder or finely ground cacao nibs would work well too.
Ingredients: · 1 3/4 cup cashews or pieces · 1 3/4 cups purified water · 1 cup maple syrup · 2 tsp vanilla flavor · 1/4 tsp almond flavor · 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
Directions: 1.Combine all ingredients in a blender. 2.Pour into an ice cream maker and freeze according to instructions.
Maple Pecan Ice Cream - 90 % Raw recipe
I love this non-raw version of ice cream The Ingredients are very easy to get
Ingredients:
· 3 ripe bananas · 1/2 cup raw almond butter · 1/2 cup Tahini · 1 1/4 dark agave nectar · 1 tsp vanilla extract · 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon · 1 cup pecans, chopped (optional)
Directions: 1.Combine all ingredients except the pecans in a food processor. Process until creamy. 2.Stir in pecans. 3.Freeze in an air tight container for 6 hours or overnight.

CONNECTICUT: HARTFORD; ARTISTS EXPLODE IN JAMAICA
|
|
"With nine major radio stations in Jamaica now playing various cuts from Capsicum Records’ debut “Reggae In-Fusion Album #1,” it was inevitable than some singles would begin to emerge as hits,” says label CEO and A&R Director Roger Meltzer.
Meltzer noted that weekly song charts published on the island August 6 showed “Just As I Am” by Misteree bursting onto Richie B.’s Hot 102-FM Jamaica Music Countdown at #24 and onto the Stampede Street Chart at #14 (Aug 2) with Stampede again naming her as “Artist To Watch” with her picture in the center of the chart as they first did in June.
In the following weeks, Richie B. had Misteree at #23(Aug. 13), at #20 (Aug. 20), at #18 (Aug. 27), at #16 (Sept. 3), and at #15 (Sept. 10). Stampede had Cuban Cohiba as “Artist To Watch” (Aug. 9), with Misteree climbing to #12 (Aug. 9), #11 (Aug. 16), at #10 (Aug. 23), at #9 (Aug 30), and at #8 (Sept. 6).
“I am delighted and thrilled for our artists, my co-writers and co-producers; but I can’t pretend I’m completely surprised by the results of all the talent and hard work we’ve assembled and invested into this inaugural CD," Meltzer adds."Our tireless promotion people have done a superb job down there, too.”
Both charts are extremely influential beyond the shores of Jamaica and are frequently published on music websites on every continent. And if the growing demand for Misteree and Cuban tee shirts in Jamaica is a barometer of their popularity “Enuf Is Enough” by Cuban Cohiba is close behind. Cuban’s message song about society’s tolerance of gun violence on urban streets soared when civil unrest and a subsequent national state of emergency erupted in Tivoli Gardens in West Kingston this spring.
“But it’s not true that his song was written in response to that event,” said Meltzer. “In fact, the song was already playing on Jamaican radio stations for three months and was actually inspired by the fatal 2009 shooting of an infant in the crossfire of rival drug gangs during the Caribbean Independence Day Parade in Hartford. Cuban brought me the song two days later. We held up its release until February because we wanted to build a track for the song that reflected the tragic feel and sounds of this all-too-familiar bloodshed on our streets.”
Along with other cuts from the album, the two songs can be heard on Hot 102-FM with Richie B., Irie-FM with Big A and G.T. Taylor, Roots 96.1-FM with Dudley Thompson and Isis, Zip-FM with Bambino, Mello-FM with Barry G. and Franko, Linkz-FM with Deja Vu and Dadre-Anne, Vybz-FM with Sir W. One, and, just added, FAME-FM with Inferno and BEST-FM with String.
Closer to home, “Just As I Am” remained at #1 (Aug 30, Sept 6) on the 101.5-FM EnergyRadio live weekly Showcase and Music Countdown in Hartford. Song position there is determined by audience text message votes as well as by listener requests. Hartford's Busyradio 103.3-FM’s chart has her at #5.
Cuban's song also took off in the Midwest after a recent concert tour of reggae festivals in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, where he shared the stage with the Governor, and Ohio, where he autographed a guitar for the Rock & Roll Museum Hall of Fame. The two songs are now gaining airplay in Africa and Japan.
“Both songs still have a long way to go in the reggae/dancehall genre even before we can mount an effort to cross them over into the mainstream,” Meltzer added, “but they are certainly heading in the right direction. I hope people will also take the time to listen to Cuban’s extraordinary rendition of ‘Born on Third Base,’ the song American tourists vacationing in the resorts of Negril call ’the baseball song.’ Of course the song isn’t about baseball at all, just uses a baseball metaphor for those born into wealth and privilege who believe all their inherited advantages of ‘social capital’ are personal accomplishments.“

REVELATION BY LEE SCRATCH PERRY
|
|
By Lee Scratch Perry
Review by Douglas Heselgrave
(Megawave)
The Upsetter turns in his best set of new songs in over a decade
For nearly half a century, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry has done more than almost anyone alive to change the course of popular music. Even though he never has attained the popularity of Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff or any of the other founding fathers of reggae music, most Jamaican music fans – whether they know it or not –almost certainly have dozens of albums in their collection that bear Perry’s indelible creative stamp.
Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Max Romeo, The Congos, and literally hundreds of other artists have benefitted from Perry’s distinct production style and uncanny sense of melody. Using equipment and facilities that were rudimentary - even by the standards of the day – Perry was able to create musical landscapes and bedrock sounds that have yet to be surpassed. Whether it was wiring a rake to use as a percussion accent, using toy instruments to create texture or looping tapes by hand, in his heyday there was nothing that Perry wouldn’t try in the pursuit of the perfect sound. As distinct and immediately recognizable in his musical style as Phil Spector, George Martin or Daniel Lanois, Perry created soundscapes as challenging and groundbreaking as any of these artists at a fraction of the cost, and with facilities that would have sent them into the hills screaming with frustration.
For a decade and a half – from the late sixties until 1983 when Perry famously torched his iconic ‘Black Ark’ studio in a pique of frustration and exhaustion – the diminutive musician produced thousands of singles for Jamaican radio and sound systems. With a revolving roster of singers and musicians on hand day and night to help realize his increasingly eccentric musical visions, Perry maintained a work schedule and output that is unsurpassed in modern popular music. A quick look through the singles, albums and artists Perry worked with during this period reveals a back catalogue that is almost suffocating in its breadth and depth. To this day, producers, DJs and musicians owe Perry a creative depth whose significance is just beginning to be understood. It is almost impossible to conceive that one man was almost singlehandedly responsible for creating so much work of lasting value in such a short span of time.
Obviously the work took its toil, and since the eighties Perry has done little in the way of production, but has instead reconceptualised himself as a singer and recording artist. Indeed, it is primarily as a singer and performer that his legend became established, though unfortunately Scratch has become known almost as much for his bizarre behaviour and pronouncements as for his music. Tales of madness, incarceration and strange behaviours – including burying televisions in a friend’s back yard and refusing to let a chambermaid in a Canadian hotel drain his bath because it contained ‘holy water’ – often superseded his creativity despite some truly excellent albums produced in the late eighties and early nineties with sympathetic musical foils such as Adrian Sherwood and The Mad Professor.
Part of the problem with assessing Perry’s recent musical output is that he has remained a maddeningly prolific artist. In 2008 alone he released three new CDs on three different labels while record pirates the world over continue releasing inferior compilations of unfinished recordings stolen by unscrupulous employees, so-called friends and former lovers. The result has been that it’s often been very difficult to distinguish great recordings from releases that are shoddy wastes of time, and reggae fans can be excused for simply ignoring Perry’s often very questionable output. This, of course, is a great shame as in amongst the dross there have been some exceptional recordings.
‘Revelation’, the newest new CD from Lee Perry is – without qualification – the best set of new songs he has released in a very very long time. ‘Revelation’ is the third in a series of new music from Perry issued by the American based Megawave records, and like its predecessors ‘The End of An American Dream’, and ‘Scratch Came, Scratch Saw, Scratch Conquered’ it represents a collaboration between the singer and John Saxon, a British producer and multi-instrumentalist with a flair for creating ambient dub soundscapes that sound beguilingly rootsy and modern at the same time. Their partnership which began rather tentatively with ‘American Dream’ and picked up steam and confidence with the second ‘Scratch Came’ has come to full fruition with the new CD. Other producers have often misread Perry’s intentions and have unwisely second guessed him and tried to give him what they perceived he wanted. As a result, they often stressed bizarre sounds and concepts at the expense of good music, but this is clearly not the case here. Rest assured ‘Revelation’ has melodies to die for punctuated with exhilarating hooks and rhythms galore.
More than anything else ‘Revelation’ represents the high water mark of creative role reversal that Perry has experimented with for the past several years. He spent decades creating innovative and often downright magical music to support singers and make their tracks sound as good as they possibly could, and when he was inspired he pulled out all of the stops to create some of the most creative soundtracks ever recorded. Though Perry has hardly ever operated as a ‘silent partner’, by 2010 it has fallen to other people to create most of the music that he sings over. In this respect, Saxon has surpassed all expectations. ‘Revelation’ is the best sounding album Lee has been a part of since Adrian Sherwood - more to the point - or Lee himself was the man twirling the knobs in the studio.
To this end, Saxon has obviously done his homework and comes off as being thoroughly versed in Perry’s sonic world. More than any previous collaborator, he creates Lee Perry records that sound like Perry could have produced them himself, yet there are enough dynamic sounds and ideas to prevent the album from sounding like nothing more than a flawless imitation.
Perhaps the most satisfying aspect of Perry’s new record is that the tracks each sound like carefully produced complete songs and not the musical sketches that he has often turned out in recent years. The lyrics are more flowing and unforced than they have been in a long time, and sound more like real compositions and not the first take stream of consciousness rants that Perry sometimes passes off as songs. Every track sounds meticulously constructed and layered. Harmonicas, chimes and bells interact easily with staccato guitars and electronic distortion to create a musical soundtrack that never disappoints. In every instance, the music fits rather than jostles with the lyrics, and some cuts like the autobiographical ‘Used to Drive a tractor in Negril’ sound so wildly contemporary that in a perfect world it would be a huge hit on modern radio. Other highlights include the hilarious ‘Fire Power’ and ‘Holy Angels’ which confirm that Perry’s rediscovered melodic edge hasn’t come at the expense of the strange observations about love, sex, drugs, God and extraterrestrials that we’ve come to expect from him. Unlike so many albums where famous artists make guest appearances to attract attention to an artist, the contributions from George Clinton on ‘Scary Politicians’ and Keith Richards on ‘Book of Moses’ sound completely natural and unforced and work well within the context of the songs. There’s really not a dud song on the whole album, and I can’t recommend it enough.
In conclusion, though I have nearly a hundred Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry CDs in my record library, I rarely pull any of them out and listen to them all the way through. Over the years, I’ve isolated the tracks I enjoy and have transferred them to my Ipod. But this one’s different. I’ve listened to it dozens of times from beginning to end, and don’t think it’ll be leaving my CD player any time soon. As I began by saying, Perry’s impact on the recording industry cannot be overestimated, and this record will remind you why this is so. Unlike many of Lee Perry’s recent releases, this one is a keeper and should be in every serious reggae fan’s collection. It will age well and years from now will remain utterly indispensible.

Michael had been steadily building his solo career in America after leaving Black Uhuru, until he ran into visa problems and was barred entry into the States. During his years banned from the U.S., he continued to record in Jamaica and tour in Europe, Canada, South America, Africa and Japan. Now that he is touring the US again, the people of America are appreciating him more than ever.
Marcia Griffiths, one of the original I –Three’s vocalists with the great Bob Marley, is still keeping the spirit of Bob Marley and the Wailers fresh and alive. She is a direct link to the prophetical, proverbial king of Reggae – Bob Marley. In her shows she always covers some Bob Marley songs with class and sincerity, as one of the family. This tour package is like a festival in itself.
February 2009, Michael Rose finally got back his U.S. visa, and started out working in the U.S., doing a few chosen bigger shows. Michael was one of the highlights of the Bob Marley Day festivals in San Diego and Long Beach, CA. In June 2009, he headlined The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, and in August, he headlined the Northwest World Reggae Festival and he played The Hollywood Bowl KCRW World Festival in Los Angeles, along with doing some other bigger shows.
In February, March and April 2010 Michael toured North America harder, hitting the smaller markets along with the bigger ones, performing all over the western US from Southern California to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado and New Mexico, and over to Illinois and the east coast.
Over the summer Michael headlined the Bayfront Reggae Festival in Duluth Minnesota and he headlined the Mid-West Reggae Festival in Garrettsville, Ohio. Early August he drew a remarkable 9,000 people at Music in the Park in San Jose, CA. He also spent time this summer doing festivals and touring in Europe.
Marcia Griffiths, over the summer, did a historical performance at Reggae in the Desert in Las Vegas on June 12th, greatly uplifting the energy of the festival. Her performance on the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival June 20th stood out very strongly as a top performance of that major festival. July 31st at Reggae on the River she also stood predominant, and on the Monterey Bay Reggae festival she also proved to be a definite highlight. Her energy and performances on all of these cornerstone California festivals were full of love and joy and truly good vibrations. This is the example of what true reggae music embodies.
May 15th Marcia attended a huge awards ceremony in Jamaica where she received an award for the greatest achievements in the music industry. Marcia is consistently very busy doing recording sessions, shows and tours in the Caribbean and beyond. She is always on the road. May 12th she was featured on a show in Jamaica for the European leaders and prime ministers. July 2010 she toured the eastern U.S. with Tanya Stevens. August 21st she performed in Toronto, Canada, and August 28th she performed on the Rototom Sunsplash festival in Benicassim, Spain. September 23rd she performs with the I-Three’s in Pittsburg, where Bob Marley did his last live performance, and on October 10th she is performing on a big stage show in Miami Florida. On the late annual U.S. Sunsplash Tour with Tony Johnson, Marcia used to do the tour every year.
Marcia’s Love is Automatic single with Busy Signal is currently number one on the England and European charts. Another of her big current songs that gets a lot of radio airplay is What Goes Up, Must Come Down which is a combination with her and Queen Ifrica. She also has out a single called A Beer and a Girl, which is a song about the memories of life in Jamaica in the older days. This is one of the stronger songs on her live set. She has another hit playing out there called There is a time for Wars, which is a combination with Beres Hammond. Marcia is also currently recording a track for the new Third World album. Marcia is a busy woman.
On the near horizon, Marcia Griffiths has a new double CD finished and ready for release in the near future. This CD is called, Marcia and Friends. The CD features combinations with singers such as Beres Hammond, Sanchez, Bunny Rugs, Daville, Freddie McGregor, Toots Hibbert, Barrington Levy, Diana King, Richie Stevens, Etana, Bob Andy and John Holt, amongst others. For DJ’s on Marcia and Friends, there are combinations with Gentleman, Damian Marley, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and U Roy.
The male component of this tour, Michael Rose is undoubtedly an exceptionally talented vocalist and performer. It was Michael Rose on lead vocals that propelled Black Uhuru to the top after Bob Marley, and won them a Grammy award. Michael Rose was always the favored voice of Black Uhuru, with his Waterhouse slurs and militant movements and vocal sound. Now Michael Rose has transcended Black Uhuru and his show is better than ever. His dancing and vocal style are loved, copied and appreciated worldwide
Michael has out three new albums – Warrior, Babylon a Fight and 911 Tip of the Iceburg. Also he currently has hit songs in Jamaica, Shootout, Bad a Yard and Born Jamaican. Another new hit song he has out, featuring Mavado, is called Gully Gaza, and he recently finished a new music video called Paper Dog. Michael Rose is staying current and in demand. Michael has a new CD near completion called Kingston 11, scheduled for release in early 2011.

With the two of these exemplary Jamaican reggae artists, Michael Rose and Marcia Griffiths, we are in for a special treat of inspired reggae music, backed by a world class Jamaican band. Don’t miss this special package when it comes to town. This is a show worth going out for.

REGGAE'S TOP EARNERS

By Steven Jackson Observer Staff Reporter
Shaggy reportedly tops list of richest Reggae acts
The top 10 living Jamaican artistes have amassed some US$90 million (J$7.7 billion) in net worth, equivalent to the annual export earnings from bauxite or sugar based on data from an online media report released last week.
These artistes, more than others, sold millions of records, toured successfully and entered into successful business ventures, according to the urbanislandz.com report.
It listed the net worth of:
1. Shaggy at US$22 million ($1.8 billion)
2. Jimmy Cliff at US$18 million ($1.5 billion)
3. Sean Paul at US$11 million ($944 million)
4. Ziggy Marley at US$10 million ($858 million)
5. Sean Kingston at US$7 million ($601 million)
6. Damian Marley at US$6 million ($515 million)
7. Maxi Priest at US$4.6 million ($395 million)
8. Buju Banton at US$4 million ($343 million)
9. Beenie Man at US$3.7 million ($318 million)
10. Bounty Killer at US$3 million ($258 million)
Verification of these figures are hidden within music and tour contracts, however, Urban Islandz says it has compiled its data from sources both online and offline.
"We strive to make sure the content we published is fully accurate but we cannot always guarantee this," it stated about its list. Urban Islandz, an entertainment company, said it compiled the data to highlight "that our reggae/dancehall artistes are doing well on the global scale in the face of mounting criticisms that our music is in decline".
Shaggy topped the list due to selling over 20 million copies worldwide of his 2001 album Hot Shot, but equally due to securing a lucrative royalty deal for that album better than 90 per cent of the industry, they said.
"Shaggy managed to sign a sweet deal with UMG, named MCA Records at the time, where he earned (greatly on) each album sold for Hot Shot. Majority of artistes are lucky to earn $1 off each album sold. The Marley's on the other hand having their own company to work with, puts them at an advantage to earn more off album sales," stated urbanislandz in a written response to Splash's queries. "Regarding tour dates, again each artist's earnings vary according to their popularity and demands. Therefore, when artistes like Sean Paul or Sean Kingston would earn an average US$40,000 per tour date, other artists like Bounty and Beenie would be brushing an average US$10,000."
A respected musician and producer who toured with at least one the top five artistes told Splash that the data seemed credible. He spoke on condition of anonymity in order to respect private conversations with artistes.
"Sean Paul is conservative and I remember he even avoided buying a NY apartment calling it unnecessary. It is possible that Bounty Killer amassed that amount because he is also a conservative spender and has other businesses. Regarding Jimmy Cliff, definitely. He has been around from in the heyday of reggae and has been involved in music, songwriting and movies. He did songwriting for big artistes and also got his songs covered by the likes of Bruce Springsteen with Trapped. That would have been a big money earner," he said.
The combined worth at US$90 million is greater than the annual earnings from Jamaica's major exports including bauxite at US$85 million in 2009 (separate from the US$368 million earned from alumina exports) and sugar at US$72 million according to Bank of Jamaica statistics. It signifies the earning potential of the nation's music which has come under threat in recent years from international gay and government lobby groups. Consequently, all the top 10 artistes made the bulk of their income prior to the mid 2000s, but Urban Islandz has not discounted Reggae/Dancehall's future earning potential. They expect newcomers to factor on the list in the medium-term.
"Gyptian is one artiste to look out for as his career is doing exceptionally good and if this momentum takes him into next year and his album Hold Yuh sells well, he could become a strong contender. Mavado also is one to watch, something good should be happening for his career soon...Vybz Kartel is another to watch too, but may need a deal with a major label to put him there. Another reggae fusion artiste to watch is Iyaz from the Virgin Islands who is signed to Sean Kingston's label," Urban Islandz told Splash.
BUNNY WAILS OVER MARLEYS' LOSS
Howard Campbell, Gleaner Writer
Reggae legend Bunny Wailer is furious at the outcome of a legal battle between the family of his former colleague Bob Marley and the Universal Music Group (UMG), which ended in victory for the giant record company. During an interview with The Sunday Gleaner last week, Wailer said he was especially peeved with the court's statement that Marley and The Wailers had a "work-for-hire" arrangement with Island Records for the Catch A Fire, Burnin', Natty Dread, Rastaman Vibration and Exodus albums for that label. "That contract must have been signed on his behalf when Bob dead and gone because, as far as I know, Bob neva sign no work-for-hire thing," said a fuming Wailer.
Copyrights
Last Monday, district judge of Manhattan, Denise Cote, declared UMG owner of copyrights to the aforementioned albums. Her ruling cleared the way for the company, which also distributes the Marley catalogue, to use music from the albums as it sees fit. Cote dismissed the Marley family challenge on grounds that Marley had, under United States Copyright law, recorded the albums on a work-for-hire basis. That means he would have signed a contract with Island, giving that company total control over copyrights to the albums. That contract would have been enforced when Island founder Chris Blackwell sold the label to Polygram in 1989. Ten years later, Polygram sold its catalogue to the UMG.
Wailer, who was one of the original members of The Wailers group with Marley and Peter Tosh , said Marley was an astute businessman. He insists it is highly unlikely he signed such a deal. "It makes no sense whatsoever. I have to review the contracts to see where there is anything about work-for-hire," he said. "It is important for I as the surviving Wailer, to do so!"
Wailer said The Wailers had no work-for-hire deal when they signed with Island while in London in 1972. Marley, Tosh and Bunny Livingston (as Wailer was known then) recorded two albums (Catch A Fire and Burnin') for the label as The Wailers before Tosh and Livingston left for solo careers. Marley went on to an outstanding career as a solo act, recording several successful albums for Island including the breakthrough Natty Dread in 1974, the easy-listening Rastaman Vibration in 1976 and the epic Exodus, which was released in 1977.
These records contained some of his biggest hits such as No Woman, No Cry, Rebel Music, War, Who The Cap Fit, Jamming and Waiting in Vain. Some of those songs were used by wireless phone company Verizon through a deal with UMG. The Marley family objected to this on grounds that they were not consulted, and filed suit in 2007 to block further use of the singer's music by Verizon and other wireless companies. Last week, Cote ordered the Marleys and UMG to enter court-supervised settlement talks, and scheduled an October 29 conference. Court battles The UMG fight is the latest legal hassle over Marley's music since he died in 1981 from cancer at age 36. There have been court battles over royalties between his estate and former band members, most notably bass player Aston 'Family Man' Barrett. Wailer has also had royalty clashes with Island and the Marleys. In 1992, he filed a lawsuit against the Marley family, seeking non-payment of royalties and use of the trademark of Tuff Gong, the company he, Tosh and Marley formed in 1971. The suit, which was also filed on behalf of Tosh's estate, ended in 1999 with an out-of-court settlement. It saw Wailer and the Tosh estate receiving more than US$2 million in

TOSH 1 - PERFORMING ON THE PETER TOSH CELEBRATION IN BERKELEY, CA - TOURING THE WESTERN US AND CANADA - OCTOBER 2010
|
|
Tosh 1, the youngest son of the late great Reggae icon Winston Hubert McIntosh, aka Peter Tosh, was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1980. He moved to Boston in 1985. He is currently an economics major at Northwestern University. After a great summer of festival performances, promoters are already asking the young Tosh back for more shows shortly after therafter.
This October western US / Canada tour is in commemoration of Peter Tosh's birthday, which was October 19th. In Boston, Tosh 1 was introduced to rap and "That was when music was real,; says Tosh 1, who started mixing the sounds of reggae with loops and samples of hip-hop in high school. Tosh has a love-hate relationship with the hip-hop genre, and believes many of its artists have gone astray, seduced by major record deals, fast cars and expensive clothes.
"The same revolutionary spirit that once inspired me has been transformed into everything it once detested"; says Tosh 1.
In 2000, Tosh 1 decided to record a couple of tracks in the studio, creating a hybrid sound that blended urban sounds, but still stayed true to the tenets of reggae and its messages of social change, activism and spirituality. "It was like second nature, like magic"; says Tosh 1. "People just fell in love with it."
Tosh 1 is a revolutionary artist with an impetus to right wrongs. "I give people food for thought" explains Tosh 1. "about waking people up. I am going to expose the system for what it is. We have to be more conscious of our life here on earth and stop complaining."
Tosh 1's debut album Babylon Burning is slated for release in spring 2011. He is currently back and forth to the studio, working on his new single "Wicked a Go Bun".
This summer 2010, Tosh 1 was very busy on the US festival circuit. He headlined the Maple Ridge Carribean Festival at the Memorial Peace Park in Vancouver, BC. Canada. He also performed on the Mid-West Reggaefest and the South Bend Reggaefest, and in Minnesota he performed on the Bayfront Reggae Festival, and in upstate New York, he performed on The Gig in the Sky Festival.
He was also booked this summer on the Montreal Reggaefest in eastern Canada. Tosh 1 traveled to Jamaica four times this summer for festivals there - The Life Fest, put on by Spragga Benz as a tribute to his son who was murdered, The Western Consciousness show, Bunny Wailer's show and The Negril Escape Summer Concert Series. Tosh 1 was embraced and very warmly received in Jamaica, the land of his birth. This October western U S tour will be a special treat for all those Peter Tosh fans who have been waiting for Peter's next release, and for the younger generations who never got to see Peter Tosh perform live in the flesh. Peter's youngest son, Tosh 1 has now taken the torch and moved ahead with youthful strength and vigor to carry on the work of his father.
