4. Article: REFRAME

By Thomas Haller and Chick Moorman

Did you ever own a picture that didn't look exactly the way you wanted it to? Perhaps it didn't match the color scheme in your living room. Or maybe it was too big or too small for the space where you wanted to display it. So you put another frame around it and it still didn’t look quite right. Then you tried a third frame, and the picture took on a whole new look and feel. It seemed like a new picture. You loved it.

That same concept can be used in your professional practice. Reframing can be applied to how you see the students and the events of your life. Did you recently get a poor evaluation from your administrator or receive a negative e-mail from a parent? Here's a creative way to look at either situation. See it as an unframed "picture" you're about to hang on the wall of your life. You need to choose a frame for it before you hang it. One option is to choose a disaster frame. Then every time you look at the "picture" you think disaster thoughts, feel disaster feelings, and create disaster images. It's not a pretty picture you create with that frame.

Why not choose a different frame? Put the opportunity frame around it. Choosing to use that frame, every time you look at the "picture" you see opportunity. See the opportunity to do something different in your classroom or with this student. See the opportunity to try out new teaching methods or learn new verbal skills. See the opportunity to discover how close you are to becoming the teacher you really want to be.

"But you're not being realistic," people have challenged us when we present this opportunity. "A poor evaluation is terrible. A problem with a parent is not fun. You're just looking at chocolate and calling it vanilla. That doesn't change anything. It still tastes like chocolate." Our response? So put a disaster frame around your current situation. Appreciate what you have created with that frame. Hang it in the living room where you can view it twenty times a day. Dwell on the disaster. Immerse yourself in it. Tell everyone how awful and unfair it is. See how that works for you. Later, if you get tired of looking at that picture, you could reframe it as a learning opportunity. Or not.

Most people plod along using whatever frame shows up with each life event, not knowing they have the power to alter the perception of that life event by how they choose to frame it. Actively reframe the events of your life so you are in charge of how they look. Don’t allow yourself to be framed. To live and teach like no other, become the framer rather than the framed.
