From the Director

As you can see by the banner on this newsletter, we have decided to change our name to American Childhood Cancer Organization Inland Northwest.

The world of childhood cancer has come a long way since Candlelighters was founded in the early 1970's. At that time, survival rates were dismal. Today they are much better for certain childhood cancer but remain stagnant for others.

With higher survival rates come late-effects of treatment. It is time for a renewed effort to advocate for new and better treatments ~ treatments with less long-term adverse effects.

We stand united with parents across the country to support cutting-edge research for better cures.

At the same time, we will continue to locally support children with cancer and their families as they navigate treatment and beyond. Our name is changing but who we are is not. Donations from our local efforts will stay local.

Families still need support as long as childhood cancer exists and no matter what our name is, we will continue to provide heartfelt assistance.

We rely on your continued support to provide programs and services to the youngest cancer patients and their families.

American Childhood Cancer Organization

"Light Up the Holidays with Hope" has become our nation’s largest annual childhood cancer awareness event.

Each year during the December holiday season, a 23 foot tree is placed in the lobby of a building in Washington DC. The tree is solely decorated with thousands of gold ribbons (the symbol for childhood cancer).

Each ribbon bears the name of a child who has, or has had cancer. The tree glitters strong in our nation’s capitol for all to see. Thousands each year are touched as they are reminded of our nation’s youngest cancer patients.

Cancer Diet Survey

REMINDER:

If you have not completed the Cancer Diet Survey yet, there is still time. The survey is scheduled to close at the end of the year.

Please pass along to anyone you know who has cancer, knows someone who has cancer, or is a parent of a child with cancer.

This is a simple thing that we can do to add to the body of knowledge about cancer and its relation to diet. There was a time when cancer patients were not supported nutrionally at all. That has changed. We know that nutrition is vital. This can potentially help to inform nutrition guidelines for those undergoing cancer treatments.

The initial emphasis is on children’s cancer but the questionnaire is for all cancer patients.

THANKS AND ACCOLADES

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month  2010 News

The Inland Northwest rallies for a great cause!

Thanks to all the individuals and businesses that came together to raise awareness and funds to support kids with cancer and their families.

This year we raised over $17,000.00 beginning with our first-ever childhood cancer awareness walk throughout the month of September.

Click here for a complete list of supporters and be sure to thank them! It truly does take a village.

Shari's Restaurnts raise big money for kids with cancer!

Shari’s Restaurants more than doubled their fundraising efforts over last year this past September. Although they did not hit their goal of $7500, they came pretty close with a total of $6692.00. Thanks to the leadership, employees, and customers at the eight Shari’s locations for caring so much!

Although Franklin Park was the top fundraising store again this year, Monroe Street was only $78 behind them with considerably less volume! Great job! Two honorable mentions for the top fundraiser at the Monroe Shari’s – Bernie Caldwell, and the top fundraiser at Franklin Park, Marketa Larson.See details and photo by clicking here!

Be sure to thank them next time you stop in!
