'LONELY SOLDIER' GREGORY ISAACS DEAD AT 59.
|
|
Photo caption: Gregory in London with his friends relaxing at his house in London three weeks ago. There were rumors spreading then that he was either dead or in a hospital in a coma. He sent his manager, Copeland Forbes this picture and told Copeland to tell his fans to read Psalms 41.
-Brittany Somerset, Intrepid Reporter Gregory Isaacs — a legend in his own time, one of the most popular and versatile reggae singers of the late-Seventies, and the smooth-voiced dancehall crooner behind the genre's landmark 1982 LP Night Nurse — passed away this week at his London home following a year-long battle with lung cancer, the BBC reports . Isaacs was 59. " Isaacs' wife Linda said, "Gregory was well loved by everyone, his fans and his family, and he worked really hard to make sure he delivered the music they loved and enjoyed. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends."
Over the course of his career — which spanned four decades — he released an estimated 500 albums within Jamaica, the UK and the U.S. Isaacs collaborated with reggae, dub and dancehall contemporary icons like Lee "Scratch" Perry, King Tubby, the late Sugar Minott, Freddie McGregor, the late Dennis Brown and Errol Holt. After spending the Seventies building a reputation as both a top-notch roots reggae singer and a soulful "lovers rock"-style crooner, Isaacs recorded his world- renowned signature track Night Nurse at Bob Marley's Tuff Gong Studios in 1982, the year after Marley passed away. Night Nurse climbed to rank number 32 on the British charts. Night Nurse is a staple for selectors and reggae cover bands the world over, and was re-released as a cover version, by Sly and Robbie featuring Simply Red, in 1997, in the UK, where it once again ascended the charts to rank number 13. Isaacs reached milder success with tunes, Hush Darling and Babylon Too Rough. Isaacs' road in life was not nearly as smooth or gentile as his voice. His rap sheet is almost as prolific as his discography, with over 50 reported arrests in his lifetime. On the verge of stardom, he was sentenced to a six month stint in a Jamaican prison, on illegal firearm charges. Isaacs wrestled with drug addiction throughout his career, which eventually led to the loss of his teeth, while his legendary voice was jeopardized from persistent drug use, according to Rolling Stone. Isaacs soldiered on and continued to make music, performing at festivals in his homeland of Jamaica, and abroad. He released his final album, Brand New Me, in 2008.

REGGAE SALUTES RASTAFARIAN ICON ETHIOPIAN EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE I WITH TRIBUTE
|
|

Meurer/News Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, seen in a 1954 New York City parade honoring him, will be the subject of special tribute at Saturday's Reggae Culture Salute. It may be news to some, but reggae music owes a great debt of gratitude to the late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I .
For decades, Carlyle McKetty and Sharon Gordon of the Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music have recognized his influence and continue to pay him tribute.
"People don't understand the popularity of Selassie," said Gordon. "We've been doing this since the early '90s," she said of the event marking the coronation of Emperor Selassie and Empress Mennen.
The CPR commemoration - noting the 80th anniversary of the Nov. 2, 1930, coronation takes place Saturday at CPR's annual Reggae Culture Salute. Reggae greats Ernie Smith and Big Youth will be featured stars.
"We try to look at how his life and work influenced the Rastafarian movement and reggae music," said McKetty, CPR's president. The tribute features an educational performance of traditional nyahbinghi drumming by Junior Wedderburn, master drummer for Broadway's "The Lion King" musical, added McKetty.
There will also be a screening of a biographical video on Selassie, who gained international fame for leading his nation's battle against fascist Italy prior to World War II, working toward African unity in the 1960s and reigning as a spiritual inspiration for members of the Jamaica -born Rastafarian movement.
Smith and Big Youth will receive congressional proclamations from Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-Brooklyn) during the Brooklyn event at Nazareth Regional High School Performance Center, 475 E. 57th St. (between Clarendon Road and Avenue D) at 9 p.m. Doors open at 8 p.m.
Smith will star in the lineup with Big Youth, African Brothers group member Tony Tuff, Sugar Minott protégé Nahki, deejay Mikey (Mack Daddy) Jarrett and Tom Tom Club group front man Mystic Bowie, who will perform in tribute to Minott, who died this year.

REGGAE TV IS ON THE AIR!
|
|
Hermosa Beach, CA (October 28, 2010) – Reggae TV has taken a place in the Saturday night line-up at PBS affiliate KVCR Ch.24 in Los Angeles. The show airs at 11PM every Saturday night and is the first full length, syndicated music program to present reggae from the artist’s perspective. Each half hour episode features an interview with top artists from the genre featuring in-depth insight into their careers, opinions and lives, videos and footage.
“They're candid conversations, really,” says show producer/director and host, Rich Demaio. “I don’t think of it as doing a documentary. The shows are like visits.”
Reggae TV was Demaio's brainchild, inspired by longtime pal John Heimdahl who passed away just before the first show had begun production. An accomplished musician and former radio DJ/producer, Rich wanted a place to show his work and to help advance reggae, a music he loves.
“Radio, you spin records and talk about it. People hear the songs and it’s great. But there’s so much more to music,” Rich says. “With reggae, as a fan, I want to see the artists, to learn more about them apart from music. The solution to me was to produce a show that presented these artists and music in a way I think people like me, want to see it.”
Designed at first to be a local show, highlighting up and coming local reggae and ska bands, it wasn’t long before the show caught fire and reggae artists from around the world were willing (and even asking) to sit and talk and be part of the show. In time, Reggae TV collected interviews with international acts like Shaggy, Tarrus Riley, Bushman, Ras Michael, Wailing Souls, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Nadine Sutherland, Steel Pulse and Michigan & Smiley. Season two guests include Half Pint, Ziggy Marley, Michael Rose and English Beat. Watch for further announcements.
“It’s about the music. These are top ranking artists with CDs and videos that don’t get much promotion. Reggae TV is here to present those videos, show you the artists on stage, give you a peek into their lives and to present reggae as the international art form it is. I’m having a lot of fun doing that.”
Ben Holland, Program Director at KVCR in LA had this to say: “This type of music is extremely rare to see on television and we have many people in our viewing area who are into and support to Reggae music. I think this will be a great program for Public Television.”
KVCR-DT is seen in most Southern California cities, like Beaumont, Big Bear, Cathedral City, Chino, Chino Hills, Coachella, Colton, Compton, Corona, Cypress, Indio, La Palma, Lake Arrowhead, Lake Elsinore, La Quinta, Leisure World, Moreno Valley, Murrieta, Palm Springs, Palm Desert , Rancho Mirage, Redlands, Rialto, Rimforest, Riverside, Temecula, Thousand Palms, Torrance, Palos Verdes Yorba Linda and most of Los Angeles as well as Dish Network, DirecTV, and Vios. Information can be found at www.KVCR.org and at the ReggaeTV web site, www.OnReggaeTV.com.

RAGGAMUFFIN 2011 - NEW ZEALAND BANDS ANNOUNCED
Andrew McManus Presents is proud to announce that joining MARY J BLIGE, JIMMY CLIFF, MAXI PRIEST, SEAN PAUL, THE ORIGINAL WAILERS and KY-MANI MARLEY for the fourth Raggamuffin festival in Rotorua on February 5th 2011 are NZ acts SALMONELLA DUB, NESIAN MYSTIK, 1814 and SONS OF ZION.
Formed in Christchurch in 1991 Salmonella Dub not only became popular with reggae audiences for songs such as Baby I Love Your Ways but also pioneered the unique Pacific sound which combined reggae with dub, drum n bass, hip hop and the groove based rock that went on to inspire bands such as Fat Freddy's and Kora.
They have successfully toured Australia, Europe, UK and Ireland multiple times and have worked with collaborators such as Tiki Taane, Paddy Free, Whirimako Black, Hirini Melbourne, Richard Nunns, MC Mana and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. One collaborative project, their 2008 Feel The Seasons Change tour, saw them mix contemporary music and production with te reo, the ancient arts of taonga puoro and the Orchestra's classical music tradition. The resulting sound - featuring the birdsong of Richard Nunns on traditional Maori instruments with the outstanding vocals of jazz-blues singer Whirimako Black - also influenced tracks from the band's Freak Controller album which was released in October.
Nesian Mystik was formed by students in the music room of Auckland's Western Springs College (although one member actually attended St Paul's College) in 1999. Uniting the diverse cultural backgrounds of Polynesia to bring together Maori, Tongan, Samoan, Cook Island and English ancestry, Nesian Mystik became one of the biggest names in Aotearoa music.
Their 2002 debut single Nesian Style followed by It's On, and (the post album single) For The People all reached Top Ten, gold selling status. In an unprecedented achievement, the group's fourth single Unity also achieved Top Ten whilst the album Polysaturated went straight to #1 and sold four times Platinum. In 2008 the track RSVP (featuring PNC) from the band's third Elevator Musiq album became their 10th Top 10 making the group the first New Zealand artist to have ten top ten singles.
In July 2010 Nesian Mystik released their fourth and final album titled 99AD (featuring the reggae classic Sun Goes Down) and announced the band was set to break-up. Luckily Raggamuffin has secured one of the bands final two farewell performances. Don't miss the chance to say good bye to this legendary NZ band Raggamuffin style!
Influenced by reggae greats such as Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, Jimmy Cliff and Morgan Heritage, Northland band 1814 was formed in 2004 by Patu Colbert and his sons Shaun and Jimmy and has since grown to include five other members.
Hailing from the hills surrounding Whangaroa Harbour, 1814 took their name from the year the Gospel arrived at Oihi, in the Bay Of Islands when missionary Samuel Marsden held the first sermon there on Christmas Day 1814. This event has become the band's inspiration in delivering the message of peace, love and unity to all people throughout the world.
Their debut album Jah Rydem was released in 2008 and made the NZ top 20 album charts and placed #1 along with three top 10 singles in the IMNZ (indie) charts.
Sons of Zion are a six piece Auckland based reggae, rock, metal, dub and roots fusion band. They describe their sound as having a reggae groove with melodic vocals, phat dub base lines and metal inspired guitar riffs. Their self-titled debut and independently released 2009 album and the single Be With You provides smooth R&B moments reminiscent of bands such as Katchafire. Expect big things from these sons (and one guitarist daughter too!).

MICHAEL ROSE - TOURING NORTH AMERICA - JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2011
Michael Rose is currently one of the top reigning reggae artists in the world. He has been headlining many of the top reggae festivals all over the world. Saturday October 16th he headlined the Dub Quake festival in Los Angeles, CA.
Next January he commences another North American tour. His last tour was from February through April 2010. He currently has another hit song out there getting strong radio rotation called Stronger, which is a combination with Baby Cham, Michael Rose and Bounty Killer.
Michael Rose is still in big demand in the US, after being kept out of North America for eight years from 2001 until 2009. Michael had been steadily building his solo career in America after leaving Black Uhuru until he ran into visa problems and was barred entry into the States. During his years banned from the U.S., he continued to record in Jamaica and tour in Europe, Canada, South America, Africa and Japan.
February 2009, Michael Rose finally got back his U.S. visa, and started out working in the U.S., doing a few chosen bigger shows. Michael was one of the highlights of the Bob Marley Day festivals in San Diego and Long Beach, CA. In June 2009, he headlined The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, and in August, he headlined the Northwest World Reggae Festival and he played The Hollywood Bowl KCRW World Festival in Los Angeles, along with doing some other bigger shows.
In February, March and April 2010 Michael toured North America harder, hitting the smaller markets along with the bigger ones, performing all over the western US from Southern California to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado and New Mexico, and over to Illinois and the east coast.
Over the summer Michael headlined the Bayfront Reggae Festival in Duluth Minnesota and he headlined the Mid-West Reggae Festival in Garrettsville, Ohio. Early August he drew a remarkable 9,000 people at Music in the Park in San Jose, CA. He also spent time this summer doing festivals and touring in Europe.
Michael Rose is undoubtedly an exceptionally talented vocalist and performer. It was Michael Rose on lead vocals that propelled Black Uhuru to the top after Bob Marley, and won them a Grammy award. Michael Rose was always the favored voice of Black Uhuru, with his Waterhouse slurs and militant movements and vocal sound. Now Michael Rose has transcended Black Uhuru and his show is better than ever.
His dancing and vocal style are loved, copied and appreciated worldwide Michael has out three new albums – Warrior, Babylon a Fight and 911 Tip of the Iceburg. Also he has recently had hit songs dominating the airwaves - Shootout, Bad a Yard and Born Jamaican. Shoot Out was a mega hit with him and Junior Gong. Another new hit song he has out, featuring Mavado, is called Gully Gaza, and he recently finished a new music video called Paper Dog.
As mentioned earlier, Michael currently has the song Stronger on the top of the charts. Michael Rose is staying current and in demand. Michael has a new CD near completion called Kingston 11, scheduled for release in early 2011.
For more information on Michael Rose, check out his web site at www.mykalrosereggae.com
With the exemplary Jamaican reggae artist Michael Rose on tour again, we are in for a special treat of inspired reggae music, backed by his world class Jamaican band.

HI GRADE GANJA ANTHEMS 3
Greensleeves Records Provides Soundtrack to the 'Other' Green Movement
(VP RECORDS/GREENSLEEVES, NEW YORK) - A stellar cast of artists light up Hi Grade Ganja Anthems 3, the third volume in the successful series that celebrates the virtues of marijuana, available from Greensleeves Records on November 2, 2010. Its release on Election Day in the U.S. is no coincidence as Proposition 19 is up for vote in California, which if passed, would tax the sale of marijuana and regulate adult use in the state. Three other states are calling for similar measures this year and currently, marijuana is decriminalized and available for medical use in 15 states.
The blazing 18-track compilation features top artists from reggae to rock, all with hit singles fueling the other 'go-green' movement. Ganja Anthems 3 is also an international affair with Collie Buddz on his breakout hit "Come Around" (Bermuda), to Busy Signal on "Spliff Tail" (Jamaica), Ziggi on "Ganja Smoke In The Air" (Netherlands), Gyptian on "Sensi"(Jamaica), Alborosie on "Real Story" (Italy), and Richie Spice on his smash hit "The Plane Land" (Jamaica), just to name a few.
California-based reggae band Slightly Stoopid hops aboard the herbal hype for "No Cocaine" featuring Inner Circle. 'The Fireman' Capleton then turns up the heat on the "No Cocaine Remix," which makes for a killer iTunes bonus track, releasing digitally and also on limited edition 7-inch vinyl. Greensleeves Records partners with record label Controlled Substance Sound Labs to promote this new hit remix.

World renowned singing sensation and daughter of Jamaica, Diana King, promises a great performance to fans who come out to enjoy a special performance at the November 13 Spend an Evening with Kenny 'Babyface' Edmonds charity event to be held at the National Indoor Sports Centre in St Andrew.
The Gleaner caught up with King at the the University of the West Indies' Philip Sherlock Centre, where she was rehearsing with her background vocalist for an upcoming performance in Japan in mid-November.
"I'll be doing a special performance filled with all the hits they [fans] love, Shy Guy, Say A Little Prayer, Lies, and all the others. It'll be great," said King.
"I interact with my fans on my Facebook a lot. I ask them what they want me to sing, so I can know what they want to hear," she added.
The international superstar appeared to be very excited about being in Jamaica. That excitement evident in her voice, she said, "It's great to be home! It's been almost three years since I've been here. I'm very excited. I mean, I haven't been here for so long!" great experiences
King spoke of her great experiences in Jamaica. This time around, she expects no different.
"It's always been great when I come here to perform, but I'm really looking forward to the jazz and blues festival coming up. I get to use my own band and all. The last time I performed in Jamaica was probably back in the '90s at Reggae Sumfest," said King.
Her new CD, Warrior Girl, which she wrote and produced, has already been released in Japan and, according to King, is doing quite well.
"The CD is doing really good over there. Four different songs from it is on the charts over there. I'm very proud of the fact that I did all the production on the album as well," she said.
The CD was released on her newly formed record label, Think Like A Girl Music.
The label, she said, was named after the single and album of the same name because, "I do think like a girl. Most of my songs are about being in a relationship, love and tenderness.
"I chose think like a girl because I wanted to focus on female artistes. The pressure they face is not equal to that faced by men. In many things, it's like that," she said.
She said, however, that she doesn't have an artiste she wants to sign to the label in mind, but she mentioned a few local artistes she admired.
"I like Cherine, Alaine, Etana and definitely Tanya Stephens. I want to do a song with Tanya. She wicked! Is like her lyrics can't done. I like Etana's consciousness and Tessanne [Chin], she was the last artiste that made me say wow when she came with the reggae mixed with the rock," said King.
King will be performing alongside Babyface, No-Maddz and the Silver Birds Steel Orchestra at the concert which is one of the activities scheduled to take place from November 8 to 14 during The United Way of Jamaica week.

EASY STAR ALL STARS- DUBBER SIDE OF THE MOON
|
|
DUBBER SIDE OF THE MOON features bass-heavy remixes of the complete Dub Side of the Moon album by Groove Corporation, Mad Professor, 10 Ft Ganja Plant, Adrian Sherwood, Dubmatix, Scientist and many more. The project grew out of the extensive worldwide touring schedule of the Easy Star All-Stars, as they both evolved the original arrangements of their most celebrated cover album and were exposed to new and developing styles of modern reggae, like dubstep. Honest Tune called the record: “Dub at its finest: dirty, emotional, spacey, disorganized, and beautiful.” The record is also available in colored vinyl as an LP.

GYPTIAN –NORTH AMERICAN TOUR –MARCH 2011
This March, 2011 Kings Music International is booking their third North American tour with Gyptian, the man who gave us the current number one song on the billboard top 100 charts – Hold You.
Hold You was also the number one song on digital I Tunes, and has crossed over to mainstream radio where teenagers all over America are hearing and embracing Gyptian. His Kings Music International tour in July, 2010 was swarmed with enthusiastic fans consistently selling out shows. Gyptian is currently one of the most sought after young recording artists in the reggae business. His manager is now being overwhelmed with offers and inquiries for Gyptian from all over the world, and his schedule is booked up every week giving him little time to rest.
In 2006 Gyptian gave us the mega hit Serious Times. Serious Times popularity led to Gyptian’s performing on most of the major stage shows in Jamaica, as well as many international festivals. Gyptian currently has two songs in rotation on radio with his breakout hit Hold You and his new smash Nah Let Go, both singles from his current album, Hold You, released by VP Records in July 2010. Gyptian continues to rack up nominations this awards' season with his nomination for 'Best Reggae Artist' at this year's Soul Train Awards. He is scheduled to perform live at the awards ceremony, taking place on Wednesday, November 10 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
With a solid foundation and fan base, this versatile entertainer now sees his international acclaim grow, and has already seen collaborations with the likes of Nicki Minaj, Busta Rhymes and Mary J. Blige, and will be joining Blige for her UK tour on November 2-3 in England.

DANCEHALL'S REIGNING CHAMPION BOARDS THE SOUL TRAIN 2010 SOUL TRAIN AWARDS NOMINATES VYBZ KARTEL FOR BEST REGGAE ARTIST

DANCEHALL DEEJAY VYBZ KARTEL
New York, NY - October 19, 2010 - (RAINE PR): Dancehall luminary Vybz Kartel has been nominated for Best Reggae Artist for the 2010 Soul Train Awards. Scheduled for the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia on November 10th, the ceremony will air on Sunday, November 28th at 9PM on both BET and CENTRIC.
Kartel joins Alicia Keys, Usher, Drake, B.O.B., Nicki Minaj, Sade, Fantasia, and a host of other international superstars as a 2010 Soul Train Award nominee. Hosted by Oscar-nominated actors Terrance Howard and Taraji P. Henson, the Soul Train Awards will feature a host of live performances including sets from R. Kelly, Keyshia Cole, Rick Ross, and Ne-Yo.
The Soul Train nomination comes on the heels of Kartel's nomination for Best Reggae Artist by the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards to be held in Liverpool, England on October 20th.
Named Deejay of the Year, Recording Artist of the Year, and Songwriter/Lyricist of the Year by the 2010 Excellence in Music and Entertainment Awards in Jamaica, Kartel has been riding high on the success of his album Pon Di Gaza 2.0 and a string of #1singles, including the international crossover hit "Clarks." Featured on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, and BET's 106 and Park, "Clarks" has spent over 28 weeks among the top 3 Reggae singles gaining major airplay throughout North America. Last month, Kartel completed a successful mini-European tour, headlining the Amesterdam Reggae Festival, and performing to sold-out crowds in France and Switzerland.
"Well, Kartel is the Dancehall artist with the most soul, so it's only natural that I be nominated for a Soul Train Award," jokes Adidja 'Vybz Kartel' Palmer. "Big thanks to organizers of Soul Train, and to throngs of music fans worldwide for the recognition, and the nomination."
GYPTIAN WINS 2010 MOBO AWARD FOR 'BEST REGGAE ARTIST'
LONDON - VP Records recording artist Gyptian received his trophy for the 2010 MOBO Award live during the ceremony at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England on Tuesday, October 20, 2010. Awarded the 'Best Reggae Artist of the Year,' Gyptian took the stage to accept his prestigious statue infront of a packed house and millions viewing around the world. "It's an overwhelming feeling winning my first international award," reveals an elated Gyptian. "Give thanks to VP Records, miles ahead in reggae, give thanks to my fans, my management and everyone who has been supporting me on this incredible journey." Gyptian's singles "Hold You" and "Nah Let Go" and the respective videos have been receiving steady airplay across the UK ever since the release of his album, Hold You, from VP Records in July 2010. He is currently touring Europe and took a quick break to attend the MOBO Awards, which was televised live on BBC 3. Gyptian resumes his tour tonight, opening for Omarion in Manchester, and will also join Mary J. Blige for her UK tour in November, opening for her London and Birmingham shows.

Sophia Brown New and Improved Recordings Gets Recognized!
In less than one week, Sophia Brown who has professed that her most loved offspring of Reggae is Lovers Rock and her niche as an artiste in the industry is same, has seen her newly improved music promoted to two important charts, the New York Top 30 Reggae Singles and Chris Coxson Top 10 Reggae on New Style Radio in the United Kingdom. One year ago a decision was taken by Sophia Brown to chart a plan that involved improving specific areas in her music production such as voice control and projection as well enhanced sound quality of her music. Sophia Brown had already been known as a hard worker but needed a team to alleviate her workload so the way forward was to select that team to carry out certain responsibilities while she concentrates on recording.Today, the results are encouraging; Sophia Brown is very much appreciative of the contributions of several individuals in her team who worked with her through the year to get to this point. However, there is much left to be done but the mother of two, is confident that the positive feedback she has been getting from fellow artistes, people within the industry and fans has come from the work she has put in, “people love to see other people do well despite a broad felt perspective of otherwise. The truth is when you out there trying people will shun you but when you show them that you are strong and can do this the same people will come tell you, good job SB” she said with a broad smile to compliment her statement.Sophia Brown celebrated her birthday last Saturday partying with most of the persons who have been, “looking out” for her at her private residence. Among her list of guests were fellow artistes Lady G and Ginjah, radio jocks Izah Bing, Donovan Dacres, Roderick Howell, Kenneth Reid, DJ Raff, Dalton Leith, DJ Neil and the Cashflow crew, Producer Chiney K, Paul Chin-Lou of US Airways, Attorneys Robert Armstrong and Delroy Beckford and news editor, Leighton Levy.
Sophia Brown has found a Chart Hopper!
Last week we reported that Sophia Brown “Let it be me” single produced by Cashflow entered Chris Coxain Reggae Chart on New Style Radio UK, this week the female Lovers Rock artiste’s newly found ‘chart hopper” ‘Let it be me’ has found its way on the New York Top 30 Reggae Singles chart at #28!
Sophia Brown’s new and improved sound and quality music production is showing progressive signs, be warned that this is just a “tit bit” of what she has in store waiting to drop early next year. But in the meantime Let It Be Me still holds down the #17 spot for two weeks on Chris Coxson UK chart which is reportedly compiled and base on information obtained from local record shops, sales, sound systems, radio airplay and listeners requests.
