Habitat Restoration at the Bird Refuge

A new habitat restoration project will begin this winter along the wetland margin between the Santa Barbara Zoo and the Andrée Clark Bird Refuge.  The project involves removing invasive, non-native plants and increasing native plant diversity to provide better wildlife habitat.
The Creeks Division is partnering on the project with the Zoo and the nonprofit organization Channel Islands Restoration, with financial support from the Southern California Wetlands Recovery Project and Measure B.  The Creeks Division will focus on the removal of giant reed (Arundo donax) as part of the city-wide invasive plant removal program.  Over 2000 native plants will be installed during this project.

Storm Water Management Program - Year 2 Coming to a Close

The Creeks Division is collecting "Year 2" data from various City departments on the Storm Water Management Program (SMWP). The SWMP is a citywide, interdepartmental program that is coordinated and administered by the Creeks Division.
Various City departments and divisions are responsible for implementing and tracking specific Best Management Practices (BMPs) throughout the year. These BMPs are designed to improve and protect creek and ocean water quality.
Preparation of the City’s SWMP began in 2003, and in January 2009 the SWMP was approved by the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board. Year 1 of the five year permit took place in 2009. The Creeks Division will submit the Year 2 (2010) Annual Report to the Water Board in April 2011.
