KORA AND SARITAH TO PERFORM AT 18TH ANNUAL SNWMV
|
|
The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival is pleased to announce that Kora and Saritah will be performing at our 18th annual musical celebration. SNWMF 2011 will be held at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds June 17th through 19th. The fairgrounds is located in the heart of Anderson Valley (Boonville), just 30 minutes south west of Ukiah.
Kora are a New Zealand reggae, rock, dub & roots band, originally hailing from Whakatane. Four musical brothers from the Kora family, Laughton, Francis, Stuart and Brad, began playing together as a band in the early 1990s, winning the national Rockquest high school band competition in 1991 and the East Coast region Battle of the Bands three years running, earning a release on Tangata Records for their efforts.
South Korean born and raised in Western Australia, Saritah is a hard-working independent artist who has built a solid fan base across the country. Her releases to date include the debut album ‘Gratitude’, ‘These Days/You’re The One’ EP and most recently the extremely successful, inspiring and relevant album Ancient Forward. On Ancient Forward, positivity and affirmations sit organically beside the serious. Driving rhythm sections and programmed beats give way to space and melody; earthy textures create a worldly yet intimate album that for the listener, is a joy to hear.

REMEMBERING AASHID HIMONS, 1942-2011, THE MAN WHO BROUGHT REGGAE TO MUSIC CITY
|
|
THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT
In the cradle of country music, Aashid Himons stood out like a Serengeti lion in a Middle Tennessee cow pasture. But Himons, 68, who died Saturday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center of complications from diabetes and vascular disease, was always more complicated than the image he projected to the public. A restless and driven talent, he reinvented himself multiple times — as soul singer, bluesman and space musician — throughout a career that practically changed with each generation.
Over the past decade, the man some called the Lion of Nashville was sidelined with various health issues. Yet these took less of a toll on him than losing his soulmate of 30-plus years, his wife Kristina, on Jan. 19. Friends say he went into a deep depression, and his health took a turn for the worse, never to recover. His passing came exactly two months after hers.
A memorial service to honor both Himons and his wife is being planned for early April. Details will be announced soon on the Facebook page dedicated to his memory: Archie "Aashid" Himons One Heart Memorial Group.
"It's a big loss to the musical community, to his family and to those who loved him," former bandmate Rose said, while Shelstad called him "a real cultural treasure." But the extent of his loss can be felt most acutely on message boards and social media pages, where news of Himons' death traveled last weekend like the tolling of a bell.

JOSEY WALES GETTING READY FOR CANADA
|
|
Unlike other dancehall veterans who have taken a back seat, leaving the music to the younger artists, the outlaw is active and constantly working. Josey Wales is coming off a very successful year in 2010; he has connected with Frenz For Real record company and is releasing new music on a regular basis. Last year Josey Wales was featured on several stage shows across the island, and he is still busy voicing dub plate for sounds across the world.
Josey Wales is currently rehearsing and getting ready for a small tour in Canada. The tour is scheduled for the middle of February and kicks off in Toronto, Ontario. There are still dates available, so Canadian promoters are encouraged to contact Maria Jackson at mariajackson27@yahoo.ca or (876) 402-9301 to discuss.
Fans of Josey Wales can look forward to a new album from the outlaw later this year.

Music is life and Reggae music, in particular, brings positivity and good vibes to people worldwide. It speaks all languages and crosses all borders. CHEF MAYRA'S "FUSION - GLUTEN FREE FLOUR"
|
|
To make gluten-free baking easier, here is a simple Gluten-Free Flour Blend. It's easy to make and store, and has been used in many of these gluten-free recipes with consistent and delicious results. It's made with alternative flours that are easy to find in your supermarket really just about any supermarket and ORGANIC at times:
Rice Flour - this alternative flour has neutral flavor and provides a light, somewhat sandy texture that is reduced when mixed with other substitute flours in gluten-free baking recipes.
Potato Starch - this is a fine, light powder that lightens baked goods and is also mixed with other alternative flours to achieve a satisfactory texture. Potato starch tends to clump, so always mix well for best results.
Tapioca Flour - this ingredient is also known as tapioca starch or manioc. Tapioca flour gives gluten-free baked goods their desirable chewy texture and lightens them up. It also helps to give a lightly browned appearance to a crispy crust.

Cup potato starch

|
Cup tapioca flour

|
Teaspoon xanthan gum
|
Preparation time: 5 min
About: 3 cups
EASY!!!! Combine all ingredients in large bowl; stir. Use mixture in baking recipes. Store mixture in container with tight-fitting lid; stir before using.
Chef Mayra’s Tip *this recipe was developed using alternative flours and other products labeled as "gluten-free".
To date, however, the FDA and USDA have yet to define the term "gluten-free".
I recommend reading all ingredient labels on food products thoroughly for recipe success.
