Loving Food Resources Barbecue Fundraiser
Asheville, NC – Loving Food Resources (LFR) will celebrate its 20th anniversary with the 6th Annual Barbecue Fundraiser on Saturday, July 23rd from 5pm-8pm at the Cathedral of All Souls in Biltmore Village
Founded in 1991, Loving Food Resources (LFR) is an all-volunteer , non-profit food pantry that provides to people living with HIV/AIDS or receiving home hospice care in 18 counties of Western North Carolina. The event will feature barbecue with all the ‘fixin’s’ catered by Uncle Otties BBQ and music provided by the blues band Unpaid Bill and the Bad Checks. Vegetarian options and take-out are available. Tickets are available at the door. Adults, $10. Children under 12, $5.
First organized in November 1991 when three individuals realized that people with HIV/AIDS and other terminal illnesses too often chose between buying food or the medicines keeping them alive, LFR has grown to serve an average of 60 clients per week. From the earliest days when volunteers packed boxes of food for clients to pick up, now clients shop from shelves and coolers and select the food themselves. Food boxes average approximately 45 lbs per week.
Loving Food Resources and the Western North Carolina AIDS Project (WNCAP) partner to help meet the needs of HIV-positive individuals living in rural parts of the region through an outreach program that includes food delivery to those who are unable to travel to LFR due to lack of transportation or health status.
The mission of WNCAP, founded in 1986, is to provide HIV-related services to the people of Western North Carolina through client support, prevention education and outreach in a collaborative and financially responsible manner. The agency serves approximately 400 HIV-positive men, women and youth in the WNC region each year and reaches thousands more with lifesaving HIV/AIDS prevention information and resources.
