BLUE GLAZE MENTO BAND NEW RECORDING CALLED MY JEHOVAH FEATURES TOOTS, STRANGER COLE AND BUNNY WAILER
Founded over forty years ago Blue Glaze Mento Band has long been considered one of Jamaica's finest Mento Bands. The group developed a somewhat more contemporary sound in the last decade, however, backing up reggae singer Stanley Beckford for two records and a European tour.

In this latest recording the band features much vocal versatility, particularly from singer Vernal Morgan, veteran of both Duke Reid and Ms. Pottinger's studios in the Sixties. Yet there are are original recordings from two other band menbers, as well as guest appearances from Stranger Cole, Toots Hibbert and Bunny Wailer.

Adding to the Wailers connection are Sticky Thompson (percussion) and Lee Jaffe (harmonica).

Review by Roger Steffen:
"For all those wondering where the bawdy lyrical bents and sociological explorations of Jamaican music originated, this wonderful collection of mento-era updates, anchored timelessly by some of its foundation artists, will answer your questions. Toots Hibbert and Bunny Wailer reveal their indebtedness to the pre-reggae roots music of Jamaica's country folk, mourning their dead, praising their maker and laughing at the humorous folly of man's sexual pecadillos. A refreshing surprise and important addition to the canon."

-Roger Steffens, Co-Chairman, Reggae Grammy Committee

RUSTY ZINN ALL-STARS: BLUESMAN TURNS TO REGGAE
Rusty Zinn, formerly a much-lauded high-octane guitarist, says he hasn't had a blues gig in two years - since he found the uplifting message of reggae and has been reborn as a crooner.

The blues nourished Rusty Zinn's soul, but reggae music has set his spirit soaring. After a nearly two-decade run as one of Northern California's most lauded blues guitarists, Zinn has reinvented himself as a roots reggae crooner whose songs are suffused with spiritual uplift. While his journey has been shepherded by some of reggae's most influential and celebrated artists, he's still shedding his reputation as a high-octane guitar slinger whose scorching fretwork provided inspiration for an array of harp masters, including James Cotton, Kim Wilson, Mark Hummel and Snooky Pryor.

"I don't think people realize that I haven't played a blues gig for almost two years," Zinn says. "I was still doing occasional blues sideman work, but the reggae thing has been my key focus since 2007. It wasn't even premeditated, it manifested. The messages and the lyrics and the whole vibe just felt good."

He recorded most of his recent album "Manifestation" in Jamaica, where he turned over the guitar chair to Mikey Chung, a major force in reggae's evolution since the late 1960s. The ubiquitous drummer Sly Dunbar, who has provided a loping groove on tens of thousands of tracks with bass partner Robbie Shakespeare, piloted the rhythm section.
For Sunday's show, which includes the opening act Inner Riddim, Zinn is working with his Bay Area combo. And once again he is concentrating on delivering his bright, soulful tenor vocals while another Jamaican legend, longtime Oakland resident Hux Brown, handles guitar duties.

They've become fast friends over the past year, and Brown's seminal role in the rise of doo-wop-infused rocksteady, reggae's predecessor, jibes perfectly with Zinn's love of vintage R&B. As the guitarist for the Dynamites, the house band at Leslie Kong's famous studio Beverly's, Brown recorded with a who's who of reggae's emerging stars.
Perfectly cast as the lead guitarist and bandleader in the 1972 movie "The Harder They Come," he also collaborated on Paul Simon's hit "Mother and Child Reunion."

"Hux is so crucial in the development of reggae," Zinn says. "He was there at the creation of ska and rocksteady, and was one of the major pioneers of those styles. It's been a real blessing that he's become a good friend, and essentially the bandleader, arranger and music director. When he's onstage, I don't even play the guitar anymore."

Raised in Santa Cruz, Zinn grew up hearing reggae, but he became obsessed with blues as a teenager. He first gained notice with Mark Hummel's Blues Survivors in the early 1990s, and in 1996 released his solo debut album, "Sittin' & Waitin'," which led to a Blues Music Award nomination for best new blues artist.

REGGAE ARTIST SHAGGY ON NEW "SUMMER IN KINGSTON" CD
When Orville R. Burrell walked into a Marine Corps recruiting office in New York City, in 1988, friends were already calling the Jamaican kid and wannabe reggae singer Shaggy.
During his four-year tour in the Corps as an artilleryman in 5th Battalion, 10th Marines -- including the 1991 liberation of Kuwait -- he would be known less for his hair than for his raucous cadence-calling and for missing formation all too often.

But he soon would be known for a lot more. Even before leaving the Corps, he recorded his first big hit, a dancehall remake of the old ska classic "Oh Carolina," which climbed to No. 1 on the United Kingdom singles chart while making inroads on the U.S. top 100.

Four years after shedding his Marine Corps blues, Burrell added a Grammy to his award case for his chart-topping hit "Boombastic." In the years since, he's sold more than 20 million albums. His 2001 album "Hot Shot" sold more than 10 million copies.
His latest collection, an eight-track extended-play release titled "Summer in Kingston," includes an homage to his time in uniform dubbed "Soldiers Story." Just two weeks after its July 19 debut, the album became his fifth to top Billboard's reggae charts.

"Sugarcane," his first single from that album, is already No. 6 on iTunes' top 10 all-time best-selling reggae songs, where his tracks reign second only to Bob Marley's.

TRIPLE T PRODUCTION NOW BOOKING REGGAE ARTISTES: ERNIE SMITH, JUNIOR KELLY AND PRESTIGE
JUNIOR KELLY
His breakthrough single "Love So Nice" established him as a bonafide star in 2000. His commanding juxtaposition of precisely timed, deejayed rhymes and melodic singing, coupled with his vivid storytelling abilities, took the song to #1 on the Jamaican charts. "Love So Nice" spent 15 weeks at the top, making it the island's longest charting number one single for 2000.

The album Love So Nice, released in 2001, catapulted Junior Kelly to fame with the title single "Love So Nice" and spawned the sizzling singles  "Sunshine," "Boom Draw" and the biting social commentary "Hungry Days," which brought him recognition throughout the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. Kelly followed up Love So Nice, with Juvenille (2002), Conscious Voice (2002), Smile (2003), Bless (2003), and Tough Life (2005), His latest album, Red Pond (2010) features the lilting lovers rock tune "Too Late" with Queen Ifrica, "Murderer," a ferocious admonishment of gun violence, and "African Child" which was partially inspired by Kelly's unforgettable visit to Haiti.

ERNIE SMITH
After 40+ years in the business, iconic Reggae singer Ernie Smith is as vibrant and energetic as ever, showing no signs of slowing down.  The pioneering singer/songwriter promises to heat up the summer with his latest single "Nutten A Guh Come Outta Dat," a humorous social-commentary about recent socio-political issues in Jamaica. Smith will be hitting the Caribbean, Canada, and United States this summer to present the new single, along with his repertoire that includes pulsating classics like "Duppy Gunman," "Elsaida," "Play De Music," and "Pitta Patta." Reggae lovers reveled in Smith's performance of  his classics, as well as new material from his latest album Country Mile, which features the ska-flavored tile track "Country Mile," and the humorously satirical tune "That's the Kind of People We Are" featuring Pluto Shervington.

PRESTIGE
Distinction. Honor. Respect. – Born and Raised in the cozy community of Clarks Town in Trelawny, Lauriston Bruce developed a love of music very early with influences from Jamaican icons Beres Hammond, Dennis Brown, Joseph Hill, Bob Marley, and Country-Western great Kenny Rogers. The sheer mention of the word evokes the notion of someone that stands way above and beyond the average. And just like the word he has adopted as his moniker, Prestige’s powerful social consciousness, witty nature, and adept song writing ability has cast him in the prestigious position of leading the
latest pack of Roots Reggae artistes.

With a slew of singles including “My Pride,” “Wi Nuh Trust Dem,” “I am Bless,” “Hot Stuff,” a collaboration with Anthony B and Little Devon, and his latest herbal anthem “Smoke Free,” along with currently release singles, like "Questions" and "Dem Wrong" on the DOCMAC Label. Prestige has flattened thousands at some of Jamaica’s biggest Reggae events including Magnum GT Taylor’s Christmas Extravaganza, Portmore
Fest, and the notoriously critical crowd at the annual Sting stage show with stage performances as compelling and uplifting as the morally poignant lyrics behind his music.

With his eye toward the vast foreign Reggae market, his overseas performances have had the same impact on audiences in throughout the Caribbean Region, in addition to the United States, and Europe.

REGGAE HISTORY MADE: MISTA MAJAH P FIRST JAMAICAN REGGAE ARTIST TO RELEASE PRO GAY 13-TRACK REGGAE ALBUM

(note: to listen to his music, scroll down the newsletter to New Release section)

Mista Majah P has just released his new reggae album, marking a huge step in the career of the multi-talented singer-songwriter. The lyrical focus of the album is to liberate the homophobic and celebrate the LGBT (lesbian gay bi-sexual transgender) experience. The release of this album will hopefully build his fan base and get his music heard by more people than ever, especially in his native home of Jamaica.

The CD, ‘Tolerance’, consists of 11 original songs, each providing a combination of his melodious vocals and heartfelt lyrics. The rhythmic undercurrent bears treatment to roots-reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, pop and r&b.

The album was recorded, engineered, mixed and mastered at Shaolin Studio in Hayward California and all songs are written, performed and produced by Majah P. The theme of the album underlies the changes he has gone through in recent years with marriage, a new son and becoming an American citizen. It was these changes of status that allowed him this opportunity to explore, through his music, the experience of all who have suffered hate, intolerance, discrimination and bullying because of their sexual orientation.

‘Tolerance’ reveals raw lyrical emotions, pulsating drum-and-base reggae rifts, plus the stunning array of influences that have found their way into his music. He was already soaked with the red gold and green roots of reggae music when he migrated to Toronto, Canada in 1982 and carried with him the new sound ‘Reggae DanceHall Roots”, which he unleashed on the Canadian reggae music scene. He was nominated 10 times for the Canadian Reggae Music Award, winning on four occasions, including ‘Entertainer of the Year’ in 1997.  He has performed all over the USA, Canada, Jamaica and England and brings to the live stage his special brand of total entertainment.

Also an accomplished actor, Mista Majah P has appeared in three feature films including the highly acclaimed “Cop and a Bad Man” performing on screen and writing and performing one of the sound tracks. He has appeared in over ten music videos and released over 12 music CDs.

He does not shy away from including political references in his music; this can be deduced from the samples of his songs in ‘Tolerance’, which include sound bites and excerpts from news broadcasts relating to homophobia.

With the release of ‘Tolerance’, Majah P has broken new ground by taking on the cultural intolerance of a section of his native Jamaican society, and the LGBT rights debates in the halls of the US Congress.

Fans are encouraged to visit the artist on MySpace and Facebook. Sample tracks are available at cdbaby.com, itunes and independentdistro.com

GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF GRASSROOTS – THE MEDICINAL MARIJUANA MOVEMENT DIGITAL MAGAZINE.

There is a lot of information on the subject of marijuana these days and moreover, it’s  changing every day. That’s why we created this magazine – it’s beyond bongs and blondes at this point (God bless ‘em).

Marijuana is now a whole new ball game. More sophisticated
minds want to be kept apprised of the evolving status of the
plant in terms of medicine, politics and business, and culturally, in the kitchen and on the streets.

We are in the midst of a paradigm shift and the polarized
debate over this plant will likely become a relic of the past.
GrassRoots, as an observer of history unfolding, captures the  best of what these times have to offer: stories by pioneers  in the cannabis movement, the latest research by scientists,  legal and medical Q&A columns, tips on cultivating your own  medicine, market observations, as well as theory and even  comedy. Our contributors include doctors, yogis, lawyers,  connoisseurs, and farmers as we are geared toward all those  readers interested in and aware of the enormous changes  that are underfoot.

You’re part of the cutting edge! May these pages stimulate

MYSTIC SOUL : : I AM ONE
‘I Am The One’ is an eclectic blend of organic, earthy lyrics and new-age roots reggae rhythms.  Each of the thirteen tracks strikes a resonant chord: whether it’s the poignant and nostalgic lyrics from the LyricSurge Records catalogue, the haunting melody lines, and the wrenching yet smooth vocals of the ‘New Now Next in Reggae’ artiste of 2011—Mystic Soul-- as he sings about love, desire, conscious living and nostalgia for authentic Jamaica.  One thing is certain: the synergy is unmistakably ‘wicked’ and is sure to send shockwaves throughout the entire music industry.

Mystic Soul grew up in Kingston, Jamaica in a community called Waterhouse; known for its rampant political violence and tough streets.  How did this ghetto youth learned to extract these soothing notes from such a harsh environment? It’s the journey that this album begins to tell. With songs like “Man fe Talk” and “Sufferation”, Mystic Soul decries the violence that plagues inner city youths, while on the title track “I Am The One” he shows the power of love and the willingness to bare his soul.  Stay tuned as we continue to watch this rising talent, and unravel the mysteries behind this Mystic Soul.

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn't, like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.

It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows.
