News From the Steering Committee December 6, 2012

The Presiding Bishop's acceptance of Mark Lawrence's renunciation on December 5 marked another step in a difficult and sad period for Episcopalians in our Diocese. The Steering Committee has been working to lay the groundwork for reorganization, beginning after Mark Lawrence was placed under restriction and was unable to function as a bishop. Now that he has been released from the ordained ministry of The Episcopal Church, our continuing diocese can move forward with holding a Convention and electing new leadership to make decisions for the future of our diocese.

At a regularly scheduled meeting today (December 6) the Steering Committee voted to hold a special Convention in early 2013 for the purpose of electing a Standing Committee and other officers and a Provisional Bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina. Plans for that convention will be announced very soon.

The Steering Committee also is working together with people and congregations across the diocese to communicate and support each another during this challenging time. A major concern has been ensuring that all clergy and parish employees can continue to have health insurance coverage after December 31. We are holding a meeting on health insurance at 11 am Thursday, December 13 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in North Charleston to explain the insurance options available for those who are staying with The Episcopal Church. All active and retired clergy and parish employees are strongly encouraged to attend.
