Stormcellar :: HIRED GUNS & BORROWED GLORY

The Wizards of Oz, Stormcellar, have gone to #1 on the Australian Blues/Roots Chart with their 5th album in five years. Hired Guns & Borrowed Glory is breaking new ground in a genre they’re coming to define as Ozicana, an Australianized offshoot of Roots, Blues, Folk and Country.

The CD was recorded on location at Bawley point in NSW, a sleepy coastal surfing town five hours South of Sydney. They recorded the album live, in house set in a native rainforest, about 1km back from the beach.

Hired Guns & Borrowed Glory pinches shamelessly from all the styles they love, with songs that they’ve been playing live for a year before the recording like “Same Old Blues,” and some that were made up on the spot, like “Hard Times”.

"… brilliant album, really impressive … Excellent production values and some great funky bluesy/swampy rhythms interspersed with some classic rock grooves. A bit for everyone!"

Reviewed by No Depression (The Roots Authority) as “Ballsy-er than the Rolling Stones fronted by James Taylor,” with songs that ‘kick like a stubborn mule,’ ‘swampy rhythms’ and ‘bad-ass’ harmonica.

Hired Guns & Borrowed Glory is charting in three countries and starting to pickup radio airplay in the US.

Dennis Gruenling :: ROCKIN' ALL DAY

Dennis Gruenling is without a doubt one of the baddest, swingingest, most innovative harmonica blowers on the planet.  His dynamic style draws inspiration not only from Blues icons like Little Walter, but also from great jazz horn players like Lester Young and Illinois Jacquet. Equally adept at chromatic and diatonic harmonica, Dennis rocks and swings with a vengeance — snapping his fingers,  blowing cool and soulful lines with a natural ease as the band drives with a steady, swinging beat.

Rockin' All Day is a solid house party record. It features Gruenling’s touring partner, singer/guitarist Doug Deming, who is also a recently-signed VizzTone artist. Serious road dogs, in August 2012 Dennis, Doug and the band embarked on an East Coast tour of 28 shows in 26 days!

Doug shares Dennis’s passion for the jump blues that once dominated the airwaves.  He can turn heads with his tasty guitar licks, as his scintillating vocals are punctuated by Gruenling’s potent harp fills. Half the tracks feature Doug’s regular band, The Jewel Tones –the rest of the cuts feature players Dennis has worked with over the years in his road band.

The record was recorded in Sarasota FL by Ed Kinder, and in Glen Ridge NJ by frequent collaborator and VizzTone labelmate Dave Gross. In his spare time, Dennis can be found teaching other harp players, and every Thursday afternoon you can hear his “Blues & the Beat” radio program on WFDU-FM in New Jersey, with Dennis playing a host of rare records from his vast  collection.

AUDREY TURNER & KINGS OF RHYTHM BOOKING 2013

Audrey Turner has the energy, the voice and the looks of a true, passionate entertainer. Audrey, widow of the legendary Ike Turner, learned to sing the blues from Ike, her late husband. During the Memphis Honorary Hero's Award Tribute being held in honor of Ike Turner, Ike introduced Audrey Madison Turner to Memphis and the world. Singing "I Smell Trouble," Audrey instantly amazed and excited the audience with her sheer talent, receiving several standing ovations.

On tour, Audrey Turner & the Kings

of Rhythm have graced the stage with such respected icons as B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Otis Rush, Jerry Lee Lewis, Koko Taylor, Pinetop Perkins, Little Milton, Taj Mahal and more. She's been featured in the

RAY FULLER & THE BLUESROCKER BRINGING EXCITEMENT

Ray Fuller's talent as a singer and guitarist has allowed him to share the stage with many blues giants including Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and so many more!

In fact, Muddy Waters, after witnessing an opening act performance by Ray Fuller on slide guitar exclaimed for all to hear "That was some hot slide boy! I could smell the smoke backstage!"

James Cotton, after witnessing a similar Bluesrocker performance shook Ray's hand and proclaimed "Finally I met somebody as wild and crazy as I am!"

These opportunities to hang out and learn at the feet of the masters were not wasted on young Ray as he paid close attention to every pearl of wisdom and every nasty riff and blues lick generously shown to him as an eager student of the blues.

Since then Ray Fuller and the Bluesrockers have been performing their brand of low down gutsy blues and red hot rock'n roll for many years, leaving a trail of scorched stages and satisfied fans from Michigan to Florida and from California to New York State.

Long time drummer Mark Ward toured with Ray Fuller for many years, formerly with Terry Davidson & The Gears. Pianist Keith Blair brings a ton of stage presence and was one of nine finalists in the 2003 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. Bassist Manny Manuel has spent many years touring with the likes of Patrick Mclaughlin and Hot Rod and The Blues DeVilles. Together Ray Fuller & The Bluesrocker's are an unstoppable force of blues and rock'n roll energy!

Ray Fuller and the Bluesrockers promise a tight performance full of fire and energy! With Ray Fuller's rockin' slide guitar, flashy, boogie piano player, our tight rhythm section and "Pearlene (our beautiful gold tour bus), this band is a must see!

JONNY LANG AT HARRAH'S SOUTH SHORE LAKE TAHOE JAN 12

Jonny Lang will perform January 12 in Harrah's South Shore Room, South Lake Tahoe, CA (775-588-6611).

It's hard to imagine that this prodigy is now 31 years old and married with three kids. Still going strong since his start in 1994 at 12 years old, Jonny Lang is in the studio working on his eighth CD and still in high demand on the circuit for amazing guitar prowess and soulful, beyond-his-years voice.

Yes, Lang started playing the guitar at the age of twelve in Fargo, North Dakota and played in his first band, Kid Jonny Lang & The Big Bang. That band moved to Minneapolis, MN and independently released the album Smokin' when Lang was 14. The young Lang was certainly getting noticed and signed to A&M Records in 1996 where he released the critically acclaimed, multi-platinum Lie to Me in 1997... at age 15. In 1998 he released Wander this World and earned a Grammy nomination, followed by the more soulful Long Time Coming in 2003. Lang's album, the gospel influenced Turn Around, released in 2006, won him his first Grammy Award.

Lang has toured with the Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Aerosmith, B.B. King, Blues Traveler, Jeff Beck and Sting, played for a White House audience including President and Mrs. Clinton and invited to perform at Eric Clapton's inaugural Crossroads Guitar Festival, among many others.

Catch the firery Jonny Lang in Tahoe this Saturday. Tickets here

DELTA GROOVE “BLUES STIMULUS PROGRAM” WINNERS!

Delta Groove Music is pleased to announce the participants in their first annual Blues Stimulus Program, an opportunity for blues talent around the world to become members of the successful Delta Groove family. Delta Groove Music has set the new standard for producing, promoting, and booking exciting blues and roots music talent. Now they’re sharing in their success by inviting emerging blues acts to submit their recordings for review. Each year Delta Groove will choose two U.S. and one foreign blues act to come on board.

After careful review and painstaking consideration, the producers and talent scouts at Delta Groove have chosen the Nashville-based Andy T and Nick Nixon Band, and Portland, Oregon’s Kevin Selfe as this year’s U.S. participants in the Blues Stimulus Program.

Guitarist Andy T and singer/guitarist Nick Nixon are both veteran blues players who enjoyed long, successful careers before joining forces to create one of the most dynamic and soulful blues bands in Nashville. Andy T’s fiery yet tasteful guitar provides the perfect backdrop to Nixon’s deeply bluesy, church-schooled vocals, an appealing combination that caught the attention of Anson Funderburgh, who produced and guests on their debut CD for Delta Groove.

Virginia native Kevin Selfe is one of the most exciting and tasteful young blues guitarists and singers on the scene today, with reverence for the masters and the fire and passion of an artist from a new generation. Selfe has been on the scene since 1997. In 2005 he formed Kevin Selfe & The Tornadoes in his native Roanoke, VA, eventually relocating to Portland, OR. Since then he’s continued to hone and perfect his own unique sound, using his mastery of traditional blues as a springboard into his own exciting blend of cutting edge attitude and original songs that speak to several generations of roots music and blues fans.

The debut CDs on Delta Groove by Andy T - Nick Nixon Band, Drink Drank Drunk, and Kevin Selfe, Long Walk Home, are scheduled for release by Delta Groove in February of 2013. For more information on these and the rest of the Delta Groove catalog, go to: www.DeltaGrooveMusic.com

COLORADO BLUES SOCIETY TO RECIEVE KBA

The Colorado Blues Society (CBS) has been selected as the recipient of the Blues Foundation’s 2013 “Keeping the Blues Alive” (KBA) Award for the blues society that has made outstanding contributions to the Blues world.

CBS was established in 1995 and is one of the largest and most successful blues societies in the U.S, serving the entire state of Colorado, but focused on the front-range. According to the Blues Foundation, what sets CBS apart is its incredibly active participation in many different programs.

CBS’s Blues in the Schools program was started in 1994 by 2012 KBA recipient Dan Treanor. Since its inception, Gary Allegretto, Billy Branch, Spencer Bohren, and Hawkeye Herman, all past KBA recipients in Education, have added their expertise and personalities to the program. To illustrate the growth, in 2009, the CBS visited 38 schools and reached approximately 7,400 students. Over the years, CBS has served hundreds of schools and thousands of students.

Other notable programs include CBS’ weekly blues update, its newsletter, the “HOLLER”, its International Blues Challenge competition, its library donation program, its scholarship programs, and its involvement with other community organizations and non-profits. The Colorado Blues society partners with several Colorado blues festivals, providing thousands of volunteers over the years for these activities.

A documentary on CBS's Blues in the Schools program is our "Featured Video of The Week" (see below) and can also be found at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceko-N471rQ. For more information, including how to become a member, see www.coblues.org.

Congratulations CBS!

JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR & ZYDECO FAVS

British guitar-slinger Joanne Shaw Taylor has toured with Dave Stewart of The Eurhythmics, won multiple British Blues music awards, and performed on-stage with Annie Lennox at the Queen of England's Diamond Jubilee concert in London. Joanne's latest record is called Almost Always Never, and she shows no sign of slowing down.

Then, in the second hour of the program… Louisiana is justly famous for a lot of things, among them a style of music that’s been around for over three hundred years, and still has people dancing today. Born in the swamp among the French and African culture called the Creole. They call the music, Zydeco. And if it does not get your toes tapping, you need a different pair of feet.

Joanne Shaw Taylor - one axe lady you don't want to mess with PLUS the good times roll with an hour of Zydeco. Next time, in The BluesMobile.
