Jimmy Cliff Wins Reggae Grammy

(Jamaica Gleaner) KINGSTON, Jamaica – Reggae icon Jimmy Cliff has won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for the album Rebirth.  The Grammy award took place today in Los Angeles at the Staples Center.  He beat four other nominees in the category for his second Grammy. His rivals were The Original Wailers (Miracle); Sean Paul (Tomahawk Technique); Sly & Robbie & The Jam Masters (New Legend — Jamaica 50th Edition) and Toots and the Maytals (Reggae Got Soul: Unplugged on Strawberry Hill).  The 64 year-old Cliff has been in the news recently.  Last week, his version of the Partridge Family sitcom  theme song, Get Happy, appeared in a controversial Super Bowl Volkswagen television advertisement.  Cliff’s first Grammy triumph came in 1986 with Cliff Hanger.  Rebirth sold favourably and earned strong reviews from major publications such as Rolling Stone.  Cliff has been nominated for a Best Reggae Album Grammy seven times. His other nominations were Reggae Nights (1985), Club Paradise (1987), Hanging Fire (1989), Breakout (1993), and Black Magic (2005).

Germans Relocating To Jamaica For The Love Of The Music And Culture

Germans love and appreciation for Jamaica’s music, culture and lifestyle cannot, and should not be questioned. Several prominent Germans have publicly announced the influence that Jamaica’s urbanity has had on them. Many have visited the island on numerous occasions while others have relocated to Jamaica permanently, giving up a less hazardous lifestyle for a more challenging one.

One such German is Reggae recording artist, Roots Queen. Though she was born and grew up in Germany, Roots Queen fell in love with Jamaica’s music many years ago as it was all she could listen to while going through a difficult time in her life. Having had an interest in music from a younger age, she decided that she would pursue a career as a Reggae recording artist after witnessing some Jamaican performers at the annual Summer Jam Festival (held in Cologne, Germany).

“Powerful Energy” (which is the name of her album) clearly defines the inner person that is Roots Queen.

Diane Issachar, Dead at 65

WELL-KNOWN reggae photographer and Twelve Tribes of Israel member, Diane Isaachar, is dead.  She died from cancer on Saturday in California, according to her close friend, Jamaican publicist Vonnie McGowan.  She was 65 years old.  Issachar was born Diane Osbourne in California but also lived in Florida for several years. She is survived by a son, Nikiya.  "Even though she was from a different culture she embraced Jamaican culture and music," McGowan said.  Issachar was a fixture on the reggae circuit for many years, especially the California festival scene.  She also shot album covers for numerous Jamaican artistes and musicians including singer Mikey General, saxophonist Dean Fraser, and guitarist Dwight Pinkney.

A Note From Your Editor.......

Yvonne Varner - Reggae Festival eGuide Editor

Start date  02-07-13. This week I share with you that I am the youngest of five.  This photo was August of 1966 in Yosemite. My sister had to push real hard to hold down the air matt with me on her back!! San Francisco Trivia: My brother Al (far right) had a band who competed in the first San Francisco Bay Area Battle of the Bands and won, but was disqualified for not all of them being the age of 18. Sometimes they were the Delrays and sometimes they were the Raydels. They played modern rock; Stones, Troggs, Turtles.

Happy Valentine's Day!!
