1. Quote

"Little instances of sink or swim should be introduced from the first year of life. Every time the child realizes that they don't sink, and they didn't die from it, they gain a sense of their own mastery of events and their own skills."

Gail Sheehy

2. Spirit Whisperer Contemplation

Who are your students' heroes? What if your job is to help them become their own hero? What would you have to do to become that heroic?

4. Article: Are You Asking the Right Person?

By Chick Moorman and Thomas Haller

"Do you know where your seat is?"

"What did I just tell you?"

"How many times do I have to tell you?"

"What were you thinking?"

"Weren't you listening?"

"Do I have to go over this again?"

Do you hear yourself asking questions like the ones above? Do your questions have a hint of sarcasm in them? Does your voice communicate irritation and frustration? Maybe you are not only asking the wrong question with an unhelpful tone. Perhaps you are asking the wrong person.

The next time you feel stressed, accusatory or annoyed, stop. Scroll down through the list of questions that follow. Pick one and search for a serious answer within yourself. Ask no student a question until you have asked yourself one first.

It does not matter which one you pick. Any one will do. Contemplate on it. Notice your reaction. Does this situation feel different to you now? Can you see it differently? Will your momentary contemplation help you change your attitude or response? Check it out.

  1. How can I see this differently?
  2. Would it be easier to change me or to change them?
  3. Am I choosing to love or to fear?
  4. How do I experience this experience?
  5. Am I doing power or empowering?
  6. Am I listening to my ego or to who I really am?
  7. What is the opportunity here?
  8. Will they be listening to my words or to my tone and body language?
  9. Is my experience determining my internal state or is my internal state determining my experience?
  10. Am I working against the world that is or working for the world that could be?
  11. Am I concentrating on what I am doing or on how I am doing it?
  12. Am I judging or accepting?
  13. What do I want to see and put under a magnifying glass here?
  14. Do I prefer to be right or to be happy?
  15. Am I focusing on someone else’s lesson or on mine?
  16. Am I asking, "What can I give?" or "What can I get?"
  17. Am I closed off or open?
  18. What is the lesson here?
  19. What would love do now?
  20. Who do I want to BE in this situation?
  21. Am I listening or telling?
  22. Is there something I am resisting here?
  23. What am I defending here?
  24. Am I deciding to be happy or not?
  25. Am I wishing for what could be or creating joy in this moment?
