It Was a Doggone Good Time!
If you didn't enter your pooch in the 2013 Cinco de Mayo Costume Pooch Parade, you're probably in the dog house! This year's event saw great costumes, clever tricks, Doggie Games, and a jaw dropping demo by the Southern Pines K-9 unit!
Moore Humane Society pooches served as Parade Grand Marshalls, displaying their remarkable sense of rhythm, in the opening number "Who Let The Dogs Out?"
Photo Left: Chihuahua puppy Marissa smiles for the crowd! Below Left: Lazarus wonders what's up with his dinky sombrero! Below Right: Volunteers walking Lazarus, Hansel and Gretel stroll alongside this year's Carmen Miranda!
What's a costume parade without a Master of Ceremony and Judges? Emcee Tom Embry kept things moving and the crowd laughing with his quips, lively banter, and bons mots! Three judges reviewed the entrants for each contest, conferring and tallying their scores.
Our smiling Carmen Miranda was a head turner, always ready to sell a raffle ticket, pose with admirers, and offer compliments and congratulations to everyone in costume! Here, she's giving a loving pat to Princess Bella, a Carthage Chihuahua dressed as a mermaid, who not only won the Best Owner/Dog Contest, but was also this year's Grand Prize Winner!
Last minute costume adjustments are made before entering the Judges' Review Circle. Blu is ready to go, sporting designer jeans, a leather belt, a black long sleeved tee... and a purple bow in his long curly mane???
Uh oh...Lucy is squinting... something must be wrong...
...no need to panic, her reading glasses have been found!
All of the fussing and extra attention paid off...Blu and Lucy placed First in the Best Doggie Duo Costume category! Second Place went to Rambo and Ranger, two Dachshunds from Southern Pines while Bentley and Jaxon, two Australian Shepherds from West End, took Third Place.
Lincoln and Ellie, two Standard Poodles from Pinehurst, arrived ready to rock and roll! Lincoln placed first in the Best Costume contest. Second place went to Scooter, a Malti-Poo from West End, and Sully, a Newfoundland from Southern Pines, walked away with the Third Place ribbon!
In the Best Owner/Dog Duo Contest, Princess Bella took First Place honors (see earlier photo), while Aerial (shown here), a Lab/Mix from Aberdeen, earned the Second Place ribbon. Third Place went to Bitsy, a Shih Tzu from Jackson Spring!
Several talented dogs entered the Best Trick Contest, but few could match the acrobatics of Hailey, a Brittany Spaniel from Foxfire Village! Here, she does a twirl, spinning clockwise, followed by a crawl and a roll over, finishing up with a high five!
Second Place was earned by Selene, a German Shepherd from Southern Pines. Two Moore Humane Society alumni, Dexter and Moose from Pinehurst, showed off their singing voices to win Third Place!
Every dog at the event, whether a contestant or a spectator, was invited to participate in Doggie Games, organized by Abby Ganin Toporek of Sandhills Dog Training! Pooches enjoyed the challenges of "Find the Treat" and "Bobbing for Bones" as well trying out the agility equipment! It's hard to say who had more fun...pooches or owners!
The Southern Pines K-9 Unit provided the Grand Finale. Boely and Asta, both Belgian Malinois who take commands in Dutch, left no doubt in anyone's mind that the best place to be in life is on the right side of the law! Sgt. Williams and Officer Carter kept things under control as the dogs sought out the perpetrator, who, fortunately, was wearing a well padded protective suit!
At 5:00, emcee Tom Embry asked for a volunteer from the audience to pull the winning ticket for the 50/50 Raffle. This year's lucky winner was.... Sarah Salisbury! Although Sarah wasn't at the event, a friend called her with the great news... "Are you kidding me? Is this a joke? I've never won anything!" were her responses of disbelief!
So, thank you to all of our sponsors, vendors, participants, volunteers, and the superb Southern Pines K-9 Unit! We hope to see you all back here in 2014!
A final note: we're working on the video clip for this year's event...and will send the link in next month's e-newsletter! Stay tuned...
