Diocesan Council
The Episcopal Church in South Carolina

Dear Members of Council:

The Episcopal Forum of South Carolina was founded over ten years ago to support the leadership, focus and vision of the Episcopal Church. As you well know our diocese had become increasingly combative concerning the activities of General Convention and began to dispute the Constitution and Cannons of the church.

It has been the goal of the Forum to provide information and education opportunities to those who felt loneliness or abandonment in their home church. The Forum also sought to assure these fellow Episcopalians that they were not alone in supporting the goals of the Episcopal Church in its presence in their cities and towns and throughout the world.

With the recent departure of the former bishop and his followers the Forum board decided a reevaluation of its work needed to be made. Our question was: Is there a way for the Forum to assist the ongoing diocese or should we just fade away? To guide us in that work we asked for and received the involvement of Bishop vonRosenberg.

With Bishop Charlie’s guidance it was jointly determined that the Forum, with its significant membership and a host of talented people in leadership, could be very helpful in assisting the Bishop and Diocese in moving forward. With that question answered it became evident that we needed to provide a Mission Statement that was specific and clear as to what our Bishop and the Forum Board thought that work should be. A tremendous amount of time and effort was invested in discussing and writing the Mission Statement (attached) and it has received the full support of the Forum Board and Bishop vonRosenberg.

We are asking the Diocesan Council to give their approval to the ongoing work of The Episcopal Forum by endorsing the Mission Statement. The Forum stands ready to work with Bishop vonRosenberg and the Diocesan Council to do the work He has given us to do in this place.

Peace and blessings to all.

Faithfully,

Doug Billings, President

The Episcopal Church in South Carolina
The Episcopal Church in South Carolina is continuing. We are reorganizing with renewed dedication to carry forward the work of our Lord Jesus Christ, just as prior generations have done since 1789. We have much to do and many challenges to meet, but we are confident that by moving forward together in unity and faith, with God's help, we will flourish.

Your participation in this new ministry is encouraged. The Episcopal Church always welcomes you!

The powerful words of a beloved bishop of South Carolina speak poignantly to us now in this time of our rebuilding:

“We should strive for unity, not uniformity. Uniformity is mechanical, barren, unfruitful, and unprofitable. Unity is organic, living, and capable of endless growth. If we are to be truly catholic, as Christ himself is catholic, then we must have a church broad enough to embrace within its communion every living human soul.”

The Right Reverend William Alexander Guerry
(1861-1928)
