Sunday, November 17, 2013 at 3:00 pm  For two consecutive Sundays the Dmitri Matheny Group appears with the Catalinas Community Chorus in a festive Music of America program. Joining flugelhornist Matheny are Andrew Gross (photo) tenor saxophone, Nick Manson piano, T-Bone Sistrunk bass and John Lewis drums. The 50-member Catalinas Community Chorus, under the leadership of Artistic Director Bill Bellah, is a nonsectarian, community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering music education among youth in Southern Arizona. The Dmitri Matheny Group, featuring Nick Manson piano, Justin Grinnell bass, and Duncan Moore (photo) drums, returns to San Diego with a salute to the Great American Songbook, offering a fresh spin on favorite Broadway and Hollywood hits of the 1920s through the 60s. Prescott Elks Theater | Prescott AZ
Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 2:00 pm  Prescott Jazz Society 20th Anniversary Show! Known for his soulful tone and inspiring solos, veteran saxophonist Milt Cannon (photo) leads his all-star jazz quintet, featuring Matheny on flugelhorn, in an evening of classic jazz and blues. The historic Prescott Elks Theater, originally built as an opera house in 1905, has recently undergone a 13 month, $2 million dollar renovation project to restore her original grandeur. More Info
Melodic Mastery
Jazz Improvisation Workshops  As part of his 2013-14 touring season, Dmitri Matheny is presenting Melodic Mastery jazz improvisation workshops for aspiring musicians of all ages. Based on the teachings of his mentor, jazz legend Art Farmer (photo), Matheny advocates a lyrical, melodic approach to jazz. Workshop partners this season include Rio Rico High School (10/28), College of San Mateo (11/22), and the Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts (12/2). More Info
