We got a super nice letter in our inbox this week, from Stephanie, who is a friend of M.O.M., mother of two, and filmmaker. We appreciate the love and we're sharing her perspective about M.O.M. here.
Meanwhile for those of you who have written to inquire about our next-stage location, our fabulous Advisory Board continues to follow real estate leads, while we make plans for upcoming fundraisers, online exhibits, and more. |The Museum of Motherhood: For Feminists|
Walking into the cool confines of the Museum of Motherhood on a blazing summer day is like walking to the long-cherished memory of a women's studies class. What do we see first? Toys, a play structure. What's next? Books. And lots of them. Leather couches and funky ottomans arranged in a ring. A stage, a photography exhibit based the economic value of on mothers' unpaid labor, and a tricycle.
A chalkboard wall invites expression. The ghosts of our ancestors look on from the life-size Suffragette Wall. The baby wants to nurse-- perfect. Sink into a beanbag chair and take in a film on the mother's rock movement of the mid-90's. This is the Museum of Motherhood, the brain child of Museum Director Joy Rose, former lead singer of Housewives on Prozac and the founder of MAMAPALOOZA.
Part performance art, part politics, the Museum came into being a couple years ago, and has been bringing like minds together ever since. The Upper East Side is its home. Nannies, professionals from abroad, academics, stay-at-home moms and student feminists mingle in its cozy confines, enjoying the ambience of total freedom and appreciation. If it is nothing else, it is the starting point of a conversation.
"Mothers will save the earth," cry the walls.
"This is the future," says the ceiling.
"Mothers must do it. And they should not have to do it alone."
