For years, motivational speakers have conducted an exercise called Personal Board of Directors. Participants would close their eyes and think of the twelve people who had the most positive and profound influence on them while they were growing up. As part of the exercise, participants had to write three adjectives for each person on their list.
This exercise was conducted so many times, with similar results, that statistics were finally compiled. The three descriptors that came up consistently were:
  1. Loving
  2. Supportive
  3. High Expectations
When I’d ask participants to put high expectations into one word, the response I got most often was “strict.” I was told repeatedly that the people they loved and admired the most had a balanced approach. They were strict and loving at the same time.
If someone asks you about Love and Logic, I’d hope you’d say, “Love and Logic is unique in that it gives us a way to be strict and loving at the same time.”
I am most proud of Love and Logic’s balanced approach. It gives us a way to help kids learn through being held accountable for their actions, while at the same time, maintaining our mutual love.
I invite you to spend some time during the next few days creating a Personal Board of Directors by listing the people in your life who had that rare ability to be strict and loving at the same time. And then think about what it would take for you to be named to your own children’s or students’ Personal Board of Directors some day in the future.
After doing that, let’s both have a moment of silence for those who are afraid to hold their kids accountable out of fear of losing their love or respect.
By the way, I can’t tell you how excited I am about our upcoming summer retreat for parents and educators. I hope you are planning your summer vacation around spending three days with us at the most beautiful place in the world. Call 800-338-4065 and get the lowdown on what’s happening on those three days.
We are committed to making parenting and teaching easier and more rewarding.
Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend.
