CHOP WOOD CARRY WATER
A Basking Therapy
An occasion presented itself last week to put into physical practice all the words I have been writing about concerning ‘personal cell communication’. After a fall, which resulted in a rather large bump on my forehead, which caused me to stop thinking; I found myself actually hearing with more clarity, and feeling the voice within me as it softly directed me throughout the day.
I remembered a teaching from long ago, I think came from a book I read called “Chop Wood, Carry Water” A Guide To Finding Spiritual Fulfillment In Every Day Life. This Zen Kohan, is an eternal truth meant to serve us all well.
Chop Wood Carry Water,
After Enlightenment Chop Wood Carry Water.
I love to cook, I love to make wonderful food that delights the soul of anyone I am cooking for, and sometimes that person is only me.
This is my practice: my Basking Therapy. Cooking is an art and one that I deeply appreciate. The food you cook can be a spiritual experience. Choosing the perfect ingredients, following the inspiration of combining sweet and luscious fruits and vegetables has always been a passion of mine. Whether I am in Madison, WI or lately in Cedar City, Utah, I always look for the local Farmers Market. I love to find locally grown things, and smell fresh baked bread spread out on tables before me. The variety is always breath taking and brings me good, warm feelings.
So my first basking meditation was to cook up the fresh rhubarb I brought back from Utah. Now you may not think this is such a big deal, but for me it is.
(Every action from this moment on is directed at communicating well-being and loving support to my cellular community.)
I love to make a Rhubarb Sauce that I can turn into anything that strikes my fancy later on. Really Simple: chop up several bunches of the tart Rhubarb; cook it up with some water, not much and some sugar, a handful or so. A few minutes later you have your base to work with. I froze several bags of my sacred stuff until I needed it last week. Strawberries are in season and so I cut up a basket of berries, paired them with a bag of my frozen rhubarb and cooked them together until a beautiful, delightful sauce formed. I also make my own granola, which tastes amazing on top of plain yogurt smothered in my SR sauce.
Now my mom always made jam and canned everything from our garden all summer long, so I am not a stranger to homemade deliciousness, but now, this day it was a deliberate meditation to nurture and support my cellular community. Body, Mind and Spirit were in concert as I used all of my senses, visual, smell, taste, feel to send the message of well-being to my cells.
Here is what I know for sure: every thought I think, every choice I make has to be on the trajectory of unconditional self-love. That love must under-stand the power of the basics. In many spiritual communities only the highest of the enlightened ones were allowed to cook the because they under-stood transmission of energy. In this moment I am Centered and In The Flow.
Chop Wood Carry Water is a teaching on Balance. I lost my balance and endured the physical consequences. And… because I never lost sight of the part I play in my own life experience, my teachings brought me to a new place of enlightenment.
Bless Everything, Condemn NOTHING!
Many years ago, I asked Buddha to teach me about enlightenment. Without hesitation He shared an experience of being on a train with me, after a while as I watched the train stop at one station after another, He said, “Enlightenment is a State of Arrival, and Arrival, and Arrival.” Knowing the essential meaning behind Chop Wood Carry Water, I under-stand now there is no destination; there is the adventure, the journey, and the contrast, which brings with it the opportunity for more clarity, more love and more JOY!
