4. Article: The Uneducated Perspective

By Chick Moorman

"I seen you from the other side of the road" were the first words out of his mouth. That's how he began our roadside conversation one day last week.

His "I seen you" language delivered a first impression of a person who had missed a couple of weeks of third grade. You know, those important days where the teacher covered "I see, I saw, I will see, I have seen." He must have missed that somehow. The former fifth-grade teacher in me cringes when I hear the English language used in that manner. I resisted the urge to correct him and went on with our conversation.

During our short discussion he made several other language errors. He told me in situations such as these he never takes it personal. I told him "I don't take that personally either," attempting to model appropriate language without making him wrong.

He told me "I could of" been in an accident. That one was easy to forgive because "could of" and the correct “could have” sound so much alike. I let it go.

In the short time we spent together, he informed me, "You should have went to the tire store sooner." I wondered if his teachers had forgotten to cover that or if he simply didn't get it. Maybe he didn't care.

When we parted company, he dangled a participle. "Do you know where the tire store is at?" he asked. I told him I did, biting my tongue.

As he drove away, my mind went immediately to judging. "Uneducated," I thought. He was probably raised in a family that talked like that. His teachers probably busted their butts teaching him about double negatives and gave up on the rest. After all, they were asking him to learn what, to him, must have seemed like a foreign language.

I waved at him and smiled as he drove away. I was feeling sorry for him, sounding so uneducated.

Then it hit me. This is a man who went out of his way to help me. He saw me on the side of the road attempting to change a tire in the twilight. He was younger and stronger than I was and chose to help.

The educated man who would have said, "I saw you from the other side of the road," kept right on going.

The person who aced the fifth-grade English grammar test probably didn't even notice me struggling with my car jack. Perhaps that's why he didn't even slow down.

The guy who gets the difference between "personal" and "personally" didn't deem in necessary to lend a hand. He had places to go, things to do.

Only the "uneducated" guy stopped, the one who wouldn’t score very high on the English portion of the standardized test these days. Yes, his English could use some polishing. But his education is doing fine, thank you. Someone gave this guy a great education, the kind that helps you become a fine person rather that a fine English practitioner. Thank you, parents and teachers, for helping this man become a helper. He is educated in what matters most.

I hope I bump into this guy again soon. If I do, I'll tell him, "You done good, and I ain't tellin' no fib."

5.  10 Teacher Talk Advantage Tips
Teacher Talk Advantage Tip #1:
Remove "Honestly" from the beginning of your sentence. It implies that all the other stuff you said is not true.

Teacher Talk Tip #2:
"Why" questions sound judgmental and accusatory. They encourage defensiveness. Use "What" or "How" questions instead.

Teacher Talk Advantage Tip #3:
"You are too clever for your own good." NOT TRUE! Clever is positive. How cleverness is used is the real issue.

Teacher Talk Advantage Tip #4:
Replace "Why do you ask so many questions?" with "I'm glad you are so interested in learning."

Teacher Talk Advantage Tip #5:
A sentence NOT to say to your students or yourself, ever: "I wasn't good at math, either.”

Teacher Talk Advantage Tip #6:
If you are unsure how to respond to a classroom management problem, ask yourself, "What would love do now?" Look IN for an answer.

Teacher Talk Advantage Tip #7:
"There is nothing you can do about it." Not true. Stop saying that to your students. There is always something they can do.

Teacher Talk Advantage Tip #8:
Doing power to students does not work no matter how loud you get. Empower them instead with choices and outcomes.

Teacher Talk Advantage Tip #9:
"Tim, the way you asked that sounds demanding. Can you say that in a way that sounds more like asking?”

Teacher Talk Advantage Tip #10:
"Let's water the plants. They look thirsty." Demonstrates and communicates caring for living things. Creates connectedness.

Parent Talk System Training of Trainers One-on-One via Skype
"Thank you so much for all that you are, to me and to my work. I am finding the training so valuable in ALL aspects of my life. See you Friday!"

Those are the final three sentences of a communication Chick received from a client in Australia at the completion of one of our Skype sessions. He has just about finished the Parent Talk System Training of Trainers, and her questions are stretching him to expand his knowledge and application of the important verbal skills he teaches others. Win/win.

In addition to polishing the verbal skills Chick so strongly believes in, he is learning about the advantages of one-on-one training sessions. They include:

The client gets all their questions answered NOW.

They get full-time access to the originator of the material.

Neither of us has to travel.

We both sit in comfortable chairs in our offices.

There is a week in between each session, providing ample time to implement the skills.

Regular e-mails answer questions and concerns, and adjustments can be made immediately.

Personalizing the material is at its peak.

One-on-one allows for greater personal connection than one-with-twenty.

You could be one of the one-on-one clients to work with Chick Moorman this new year. Four people (it's already down to one opening) are all he will do this with in the coming year. Interested? E-mail Chick Moorman at ipp57@aol.com and he will send you the FULL details about this exciting opportunity.
