at Mary Tomas Gallery, Dallas, TX
Opening Reception  - Saturday,
October 17, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Kenn Kotara explores a conceptualized version of language using the cellular geometry of Braille. His ability to weave the known and unknown into his work is especially captivating. By leaving blank spaces in the titles he beckons the viewer to engage in his vocabulary. Kotara’s perpetual curiosity with space and form combined with a literary propensity continues to lead his muse into examining patterns based in mathematics, architecture, natural and life sciences striking a unique balance between chaos and order. Working in mediums such as copper, stainless steel, mixed media on canvas, 3-D screens or hand punched Braille one can sense the pulse of this unique artistic language.
Kotara’s unique use of the Braille language system of communication of dots impels the viewer to reinterpret them in their own vernacular. “The Braille dots create a bas-relief in the materials he chooses that speak to the viewer on many levels. The works are both masculine and feminine and have the ability to stir the viewer on an entirely different level. Because the works are to be touched they offer a chance to “see” art in new ways,” says gallery director Mary Tomás.
As Kenn explains, “Through my Braille works, I am exploring the anthropologic quality of Braille and considering the metaphorical implications of human interaction. I think of what it is like to possess perfect vision, yet the junction of one’s philosophies and ideologies creates impairment. When we can’t see beyond our own ideas, we accept them as sufficient. What if we were to shift, even slightly?  Might a glimmer recalibrate our optics, our perceptions?”
The patterns and colors featured in Kotara’s works give them a universal appeal, and many of his pieces have become part of corporate and public collections including: UT Southwestern William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital (Dallas), Asheville Art Museum, Louisiana State Museum, Masur Museum, U.S. Embassy (Jamaica), Bellagio (Las Vegas), Sumisho (Tokyo), and Western Asset Management (Sao Paulo).
