Homeland Security Award

I’m very happy to report that the New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services has awarded us a $25,000 grant to support a region-wide EMS recruitment and retention program. We developed a program and submitted our application in June following a survey of EMS captains and fire chiefs which revealed that EMS recruitment is a key issue threatening the strength of our EMS safety net. We will use this award to launch a recruitment and retention campaign which will combine social media as well as tradition media. The campaign, based around the theme, "EMS Everyday Heroes," is designed to educate the public about the critical need for EMS volunteers to support our regional emergency medical service safety net. Our EMS agency partners will reinforce the message on the ground and help us coordinate recruitment efforts. New EMS volunteers will be directed to their local agencies. I want to thank the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services for their faith in our plan and support.

Cribs for Kids

In an initiative driven by our Child Health and Safety Team, I’m happy to report that the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation has awarded us $2,500 to support our goal of purchasing 40 Cribs for Kids Safe Sleep Survival Kits for needy families. Each Safe Sleep Survival Kit contains a Graco Pack ‘n Play, fitted sheet, Halo infant sleep sack, a pacifier and safe sleep information for parents and caregivers. The kits are designed to provide a safe sleep environment for newborns whose parents or caregivers lack the resources to create one on their own. We are also applying for additional funding from regional private and public foundations to fund the effort. The Child Health and Safety Team has reviewed four infant deaths linked to unsafe sleep environments. Taking proactive measures, Southern Tier Health Care System has been named a Cribs for Kids partner in Western New York. The designation allows us to purchase Graco Pack ‘n Plays and Safe Sleep Survival Kits at cost. This program will prevent unsafe sleep infant deaths and educate parents and caregivers about the importance of safe sleep environments. I want to thank the Board of Directors of the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation for their generous support of this important effort. I also want to thank all the members of our Child Health and Safety Team for their dedication to protecting the health and well-being of children in our community.
