Parent Newsletter #141
September 9, 2016
Welcome! This is a free parent newsletter offered to you by Chick Moorman and Thomas Haller.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to strengthen families and improve parent communication skills (including our own) by helping parents learn practical, usable verbal strategies for raising responsible, caring, confident children.
In This Issue
1. Quote
2. Spirit Whisperer Contemplation
3. Bumper Sticker
4. Do You Love Your Children Enough?
5. Bonus Article: Tips for Getting Your Kids to Talk About School
1. Quote
"An allowance is not a reward for good behavior nor a payment for chores. It is an educational device that has a distinct purpose: to provide experience in the use of money by exercise of choices and assuming responsibilities.”

∼ Haim G. Ginott
2. Spirit Whisperer Contemplation
What if you focused today only on what your children do right? Could you play this game of selective noticing and enjoy it?
3. Bumper Sticker
Spotted on a red Ford Escape in Galveston, TX:

DISOBEDIENCE is not an issue
If OBEDIENCE is not the goal.
4. Do You Love Your Children Enough?

By Chick Moorman and Thomas Haller

Do you love your children enough to allow them to experience the outcomes of their actions? Can you let reasonable, related consequences flow from their behaviors without making them bad, lazy or wrong?

Do you love your children enough to say "no" when health, safety or age-appropriateness is concerned? Can you do it in the face of "everyone else gets to"? Can you resist caving in and acquiescing?

Do you love your children enough to know where they are at all times? Have you developed a plan that allows for you to be informed of a change in their plans resulting in a new destination?

Do you love your children enough to listen to them without interrupting? Can you listen to understand rather than listen to construct your next point?

Do you love your children enough to allow them to make choices that could lead to the discovery that they might want to make a different choice next time?

Do you love your children enough to delete variations of "I told you so" from your Parent Talk repertoire? Can you refrain from being right in the midst of them learning their own lesson?

Do you love your children enough to help them trust their own inner knowing? Do you teach them to check it out inside, give it the tummy test, or consult their intuition?

Do you love your children enough to talk regularly with them about sex and sexuality? Are you aware that if you are not having these frequent conversations with your children, someone else already is?

Do you love your children enough to intentionally create and participate in family traditions? Are you aware that rituals help family members bond and see themselves as part of a larger whole?

Do you love your children enough to learn effective verbal skills to use in place of yelling, hitting or shaming them? Are you conscious of the notion that if the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to look at every situation as if it were a nail? Do you teach your children that being a yeller, hitter or shamer is a good way for them to get what they want?

Do you love your children enough to create opportunities to get them outdoors? Are you aware of the value that being outdoors offers in terms of exercise, beauty, silence, interconnectedness, and respect for all living things?

Do you love your children enough to teach them to speak up for themselves? Do you refrain from answering questions directed to your children, wait for them to ask for help, and honor their voice when they offer an opinion?

Do you love your children enough to recognize and appreciate their passion? Do you make it okay that their passion is different from yours?

You decide.

5. Bonus Article: Tips for Getting Your Kids to Talk About School
"What did you learn in school today?"
"Nothing."
"Anything interesting happen?"
"Nope."
"Did you like it?"
"It was OK."

Does getting your kids to offer information about school seem more difficult than pulling teeth? Do you ever feel like a lawyer cross-examining your child in an attempt to find out what’s really happening at school? Do you wish your child would volunteer more information about his or her educational experience so you wouldn’t have to ask so often? If so, this article is for you.
