Wildfire Information Center Set Up
As our region struggles with multiple wildfires, the National Forest Service has set up a Joint Information Center to keep the public informed of the status of the fires. This one-stop information center will provide updates on wildfires, evacuations and shelters, road and trail closures, air quality, current burning restrictions, and the schedule for public meetings for wildfires.

The center will be staffed by US and NC Forest Service public information officers, county emergency management officials, public health officers, and wildlife resources commission staff. Call 828-575-2840 from 8 am to 8 pm, or email ncjicinformation@gmail.com. Information will also be posted at http://ncjic.blogspot.com.

Updated information is also available at https://www.romanticasheville.com/forest-fire

Blue Ridge Heritage Trail Map Brochure Honored
The Blue Ridge Heritage Trail map brochure was recently awarded a prestigious Multi-Media Award from the North Carolina Society of Historians at their Diamond Jubilee annual meeting.

The judges' collective comments
“Before we begin, we’d like to say that, although their website wasn’t entered into this category, it is phenomenal. The brochure covers the same data as the website but in concise form. There is a massive amount of fantastic data regarding possible sites to visit along the Blue Ridge Heritage Trail. Seventy (70) places are listed, each complete with a photo and snippet of information about the site, an address or location, phone number and web address. This is the ultimate guide for anyone wanting to take a historic tour of some of North Carolina’s finest, most interesting places to learn about some of the state’s most fascinating people and cultures.”

The map, designed by Russell Shuler, BrainHooks LLC, includes information and images of all 70 sites on the trail. It was created as a tool for visitors to make their way to many historically and culturally significant places in the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. It is a component of a comprehensive marketing program that includes interactive kiosks at the five NC Welcome Centers at Interstate locations coming into the BRNHA, and the website mentioned by the judges.

The North Carolina Society of Historians was established in December 1941 for the purpose of collecting, preserving and perpetuating North Carolina's rich history; and for recognized those persons who fulfill the society's objectives.

The Blue Ridge National Heritage Area Partnership is grateful to the Society for this honor, and also to Jeff and Claire Halsey, Imaging Specialists, Inc., Sparta, NC, for nominating the brochure.
