This anatomy course will help you deepen your understanding of your body, identify how to achieve greater freedom of movement and stability in your joints, improve your muscular strength, and develop a more powerful yet safe asana program.
Akke Hulburt will offer an accessible, enriching yoga anatomy overview at In Balance Yoga Studio at 401 South Main Street, Blacksburg.
In this 7-part course you will:
• Explore how muscles, bones and other connective tissue, the nervous system and reflexes work in relation to your asana practice.
• Assess your of range of motion in your ankles, knees, hips, wrists, elbows, shoulders, and spine.
• Engage your core through awareness of your anatomy
You’ll come away with a more thorough understanding of the human body and tools to apply to your practice as a teacher or student of Yoga
Course begins on Sunday, Jan. 8th, 1:00 - 2:45 pm.
Following 6 session dates are:
Saturdays Jan 21, Feb. 11, and Feb. 25, March 11 and May 6th from 8:00-9:45 a.m.

Attendance to all sessions is required to receive 12.5 CEU’s.

Akke Hulburt has been a student of Yoga since 1973 and has been teaching Yoga to Blacksburg since 1988, at her own studio since 2000. Akke has been involved with Integral Yoga (Yogaville) Intermediate TT’s from 2001–2010. She is certified as a Massage Therapist and a Structural Yoga Therapist by Mukunda Stiles.
Akke achieved an understanding of movement potentials and how to make full range of motion accessible by teaching 8-12 weekly Yoga classes to participants ranging from High School students to seniors, as well as in therapeutic settings. Akke is an anatomy geek and loves to share that enthusiasm by kindling that excitement in you.

Kunga Yoga was founded in 2007 by Kristin Cooper, Founder of The Wilmington Yoga Center (est. 2000). Kunga Journeys was founded in 2007 by Kristin Cooper and Loren Gulak, husband and wife and partners in life. Kunga Yoga was founded out of a desire to raise funds and increase awareness for underserved populations, and to build community among those who desire to serve.
About Kristin Cooper, ERYT500
The Founder of the Kunga Yoga Teacher Training School and Founder of Wilmington Yoga Center is Kristin Cooper, ERYT500. Kristin leads some of the 200 & 500 hour programs, along with a group of highly experienced Kunga Yoga Faculty members. Kristin is also the creator of Rhythmic Flow Yoga w/the Kunga Drummers and Founder of Kunga Journeys orphanage volunteer service retreats in developing countries. Rhythmic Flow and Kunga Journeys are led by Kristin and her percussionist husband, Loren Gulak.
“Kunga” is a Rwandan word meaning “to serve or help.” The mission of all Kunga Yoga programs is to offer the teachings of yoga as a path of service to the planet, its people, and all beings. The heart of all Kunga Yoga programs is to encourage, inspire, and support healthy living, community building, volunteering and positive activism. We chose this word in honor of the first group of children that we had the honor of working with, the Mizero orphans of the Rwandan genocide. Our mission is supported by three primary models: Kunga Yoga Teacher Training School: 200 & 300-Hour programs, Kunga Journeys service-based yoga retreats, and Kunga Yoga public classes.

Authentic Movement is just that. It is allowing your body to move in an authentic way. It differs from improvisation in the fact that the movement comes from deep within instead of from an external prompting to move. One sits, normally with eyes closed and allows the body to move in whatever way it needs to in that moment. This is a great practice to deepen compassion for self and others as well as gain a better understanding of self and the stories our bodies hold. In authentic movement, a witness is present to offer safety while you move. Through practice one internalizes this non-judgmental witness of themselves as they move authentically through life.

What is Chair Yoga?
Chair Yoga is for people who cannot get down on the floor because of injuries, age, weight, inflexibility or handicap. This includes people with disabilities, seniors, office workers who sit all day and those of us with health issues that require an alternate form of exercise - it is also a great introduction to yoga!
Do I need a mat?
No, chairs are provided and we do everything in chairs. Chair Yoga is Yoga in a Chair, not with a chair.
Is Chair Yoga as beneficial as mat yoga?
Yes! We still practice breathing exercises throughout and you'll be able to increase flexibility as well as improve your posture.
Can someone participate in a Chair Yoga class if they have a bad back?
Absolutely! A key principle in all forms of yoga practice is to listen to your body and do only what feels right. Modifications are offered as every body is different and every body offers different levels of flexibility available to them.
If someone is wheelchair bound, uses a cane or walker, can they still participate?
Absolutely! Modifications are made to every pose done to accommodate everyone from the beginner to the well practiced Chair Yogi!
What if I am intimidated by yoga because of the complicated poses and difficult breathing aspects?
Misconceived notions are very popular with yoga, however, Chair Yoga may put an end to those! I use a dynamic approach for individuals with a variety of movements, people who otherwise could not get the healing benefits of a Yoga practice now can in Chair Yoga. In Chair Yoga I offer a safe & controlled approach to wellness, improved movement, increased posture and breath awareness. The Chair allows for greater stability and reduces the fear that keeps us from trying new poses. In a Chair Yoga class you will get a variety of movements, including: twists, hip stretches, and back bends, all to increase benefits of the body and mind - without the challenging arm balancing poses!
