Cribs for Kids
One year ago today we gave away our first Pack ’n Play portable crib to a new mother from Allegany. Since then, we’ve distributed 97 Pack ’n Plays to families from Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. Before they leave our office, we educate each parent or caregiver about the importance of creating a safe sleep environment to prevent SIDS. Many of these families would be unable to provide a safe sleep environment for their newborns without our help. Ninety percent of families who received a Pack ’n Play earn less than $20,000 per year and 70 percent earn less than $10,000 per year. We received start-up funding from private foundations in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. We continue to search for funding to sustain the program. If you’re aware of any foundations or funding sources we can reach out to, please contact me or our Grant Writer John Eberth at jeberth@sthcs.org. We became Cribs for Kids partners following four infant deaths linked to unsafe sleep environments.

Safe Sleep Champions
I’m very excited to report that Olean General Hospital, WCA Hospital and Jones Memorial Hospital have taken steps to become Cribs for Kids Certified Safe Sleep Champion hospitals. This is a major undertaking. Each hospital will adopt infant safe sleep policies, commit to ongoing safe sleep training for staff, educate parents about the importance of infant safe sleep prior to discharge, conduct safe sleep outreach education in the community and transition to using Halo SleepSack swaddles in their nurseries instead of loose blankets. As a Cribs for Kids partner agency, STHCS is honored to be part of this effort. For the last year, Olean General, WCA and Jones have partnered with us for an Office of Children and Family Services infant Safe Sleep pilot program, ensuring parents are educated about infant safe sleep and giving all parents safe sleep kits prior to discharge. All three hospitals are already Cribs for Kids Safe Sleep Ambassador agencies. I want to thank the administration and staff at Olean General Hospital, WCA Hospital and Jones Memorial Hospital for everything they’re doing to ensure every infant has a safe sleep environment.
