Sequencing is a critical aspect of any high-quality asana class. The postures chosen and the order in which they are presented will affect a student's experience significantly. In this workshop, we will look at the considerations in ordering postures in a meaningful way to create safe and dynamic sequences.
Sequencing 3: Considerations and Structure in Sequencing 
May 6, 2017 • In Balance Yoga • 1:45 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.

Creating a sequence is like writing a story; each has a beginning, middle, and an end. There is a logical crescendo toward the climax of the storyline, followed by a thoughtful cooling down and a resolution or ending. In this workshop we will look at the theory behind structuring a class and factors that need to be considered in sequencing.
Sequencing 4: Advanced Asana 
June 10, 2017 • In Balance Yoga • 1:45 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.

In this final workshop of the series, we will work through some real-life applications of sequencing. We will create sequences around advanced asana and explore the considerations inherent in teaching these to open level classes.
This workshop is part of the In Balance Yoga 200 Hour Teacher Training program.

Morning Intensives are physically challenging and internally focused, designed to meet the demands of modern life. Meditations set the day's intent, while the physical practice helps students develop strength and skills to take their practice deeper. Students attending these classes can expect to feel a heightened sense of energy throughout the day and to leave class with an increased sense of physical and emotional awareness.

Join us for a free community class! Justine is a physical therapist and yoga instructor who trained at Yoga Vida in NYC. Her style is a dynamic and fluid mixture of Ashtanga + Vinyasa, with some influences from Hatha + Kundalini. Besides the actual asana practice, her classes also include pranayama, meditation, and/or chanting; while the class is energetic and physically demanding, there is an emphasis on internal monitoring and using the asana practice to focus in, diving deeper to uncover one's purusha/self/pure consciousness.

A couple of years ago, Karen had the opportunity to take a free course from the Christina Phipps Foundation, which teaches yoga instructors how to teach a class for breast cancer survivors and patients currently going through treatment for breast cancer.  (

The class had physicians, physical therapists, oncologists, plastic surgeons, etc. speaking and educating the group as to what breast cancer patients/survivors are going through, or could be going through. The class has also proven to be beneficial to the group as survivors and patients supporting one another.

Thank you Joe Scarpaci, for helping coordinate this fundraising opportunity to support a Cuban a cappella group called "Vocal Vidas" and help bring them to Blacksburg Lyric Theater this year!  The Vocal Vidas were recently featured in the Roanoke Times. Their talent is incredible and they have never been to the United States. We hope to pair them with local AME Choirs and school children to sing spirituals and gospel as well as Cuban son, guajiro, cha cha cha and other unaccompanied genres. 
All proceeds would be to cover the Lyric rental space and provide a small honorara for the group.

Healthy Recipe of the Month: Slow Cooker Vegetarian Chili

A hearty and warming vegan chili that's full of flavor and rich with protein and fiber (also perfect for Meatless Monday)!
1 onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 green or red bell pepper, diced (or, use half green, half red)
1 chipotle pepper in adobo, minced (you can use 1/2 a pepper to make it less spicy, or just use 1TBL of the sauce)
1 TBL chili powder
2 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. smoked paprika
1 tsp. oregano
2, 15oz cans black beans, rinsed and drained
1, 15oz can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1, 15oz can/jar/box diced fire-roasted tomatoes
1, 15oz can/jar/box tomato sauce
½ cup water or veggie broth/stock
¼ tsp. salt
½ cup quinoa, rinsed well
Optional toppings: diced red or green onion, avocado, shredded cheese, plain Greek yogurt or sour cream, finely chopped cilantro
  1. Add to slow cooker the onion, garlic, bell pepper, chipotle in adobo, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, black beans, pinto beans, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce and water or broth/stock
  2. Cook on low for 6 hours or high for 4 hours.
  3. Add quinoa in the last 40 minutes of cooking. I recommend serving the chili with at least two toppings– they really make this meal delicious!
