Here we are once more facing one of my least favorite weekends of the year...the beginning of daylight savings time. I don't know about you, but to me it feels like getting cheated out of an hour. So I got to wondering what would I do with that extra hour if I could avoid skipping it. Dare I admit my first thought is just to ask for my hour back so I could sleep? The official time change happens at 2 am right, so sleep is maybe the easy answer. Beyond sleeping an additional hour if I could, my creativity seems to be stuck in a rut. So help me out...what would you do if you were given your "spring ahead" hour to do with as you please. Email me at the address below if you want to share your thoughts.
Finally, always remember you can let me know if you have any ideas, comments or additions to the newsletter. Just send them to me anytime at:

The Ozark Blues Society held it's annual meeting on March 7, 2017 at Foghorns in Springdale. The board wishes to thank the members who joined us for this important meeting. Standing committees reviewed their past work and shared ideas for the future. Voting was completed for the board position of president (2-year term/voting held in odd years) and Bill Baird was elected to serve a second term in that role. Voting for the office of Treasurer (2-year term/voting held in odd years) was deferred to a later date to allow for a better recruiting effort. Current treasurer Cheryl Canfield will continue to support the position as needed until such time that a new treasurer can be elected to the role. For more information, or to nominate a candidate for the position of treasurer, please contact Leah Spears-Blackmon

2017 Spring
Blues in the Schools
One Last Hurrah!
|
It has been another great year of late winter/ early spring Blues in the Schools (BITS) sessions. With and all-school program at Bob Folsom Elementary in Farmington where we shared a bit of blues with the kids while presenting third grade teacher, Ashley Ann Watson, with two new xylophones for her classroom. These instruments will be used to enhance her ability to reach more kids as she teaches about blues and American roots music.
Just a couple weeks later we were off to both Ramay and Woodland Jr High Schools in Fayetteville to present BITS programs to all the seventh grade students. As a board we wish to thank our 2017 BITS band, the Brick Fields Band (in a slightly downsized version of the current lineup.) Just this week we received a packet containing nearly 100 thank you notes from the students at Woodland. A quick survey of those messages speaks volumes about our efforts to in
"Keeping the Blues Alive!"
Our morning started early at Woodland Junior High School where all 350 students attended the event held in the gymnasium during the first period of the day. After a mid-day break we set up at Ramay Junior High for three 45 minute long programs each for groups of about 100 of the school's 7th graders.
The response of students as well as teachers was wonderful again this year. We have already been asked to come back next year!

You have to open your mind. I like the ability to express myself in a deep way. It's the closest music to our humanity - it's like a folk music that rises up out of a culture. Read more at: http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/s/sonnyterry211910.html

"Some countries actually pay street artists. I ain't lyin'! Civilization dies without art. The heart and soul wither."
I was always singing the way I felt, and maybe I didn't exactly know it, but I just didn't like the way things were down there-in Mississippi. Read more at: https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/m/muddy
