Adopt a Crib Update
I’m very happy to report that 26 cribs have been sponsored by individuals and organizations through our Adopt a Crib Campaign. The St. Bonaventure Parish – The Bridge program donated 10 cribs, Olean Area Federal Credit Union donated three and the Olean-Area Young Professionals Group donated two. I want to thank them and the other donors for supporting this program which is designed to protect infants from SIDS and other sleep-related deaths. Through the campaign, people can “adopt” a Pack ’n Play portable crib for $55. We started the Adopt a Crib Campaign to help support our Cribs for Kids Program. The program provides parents in need with infant safe sleep education and a portable Pack ’n Play crib with a fitted sheet. We launched the Cribs for Kids program following four infant deaths linked to unsafe sleep environments. If you have questions or want more information, please contact Jeff at (716) 372-0614 or a jciminesi@sthcs.org.
NYS Critical Care Changes
Abbe, our STEMS coordinator, and Mickey Forness of the SWREMS Council spent the first part of the week in Albany at the State EMS Council (SEMSCO) meeting. SEMSCO approved the following with regard to Critical Care EMS in New York State:
  • The state will continue the CC continuing medical education program.
  • After January 1, 2018, the Department of Health will no longer approve original CC classes.
  • Eighteen months following January 1, 2018, the Department of Health will no longer approve CC refresher or CC rapid refresher courses.
  • The Department of Health will create an automatic advanced standing CC to Paramedic bridge program for any on-line CC with three-years of active experience as a critical care provider. The CC to Paramedic bridge program will run for a minimum of 10 years from January 1, 2018, to January 1 of 2028.
Of course, as the regional EMS program agency, Southern Tier Health Care System will assist area EMS agencies and providers as they adjust to these changes. If you have any questions, please call Abbe at (716) 372-0614 or email her at stems@sthcs.org.
