Remembering....
CHERRY AND CAL
Join the NWA music community as they gather to remember Cherry Brooks and Cal Jackson. The memorial is being held at George's Majestic Lounge on Sunday, June 18. Doors open at 4:30, and the event is from 6-8. Acts scheduled to take part include: Shabby chic, Dr 6, Whiplash Gumbo, Jim Mills, and Pulse 192.

The following memory was shared
by Liz Lottmann:
"The first time I met Cherry was at the memorial that Paul Hughes organized for Porky’s family, friends and fans. Porky was Cherry’s drummer, and although I had met Porky, I had never had a chance to talk with Cherry. She and Robin were leaving the stage when I walked up and said, “Hi, Cherry, I’m Liz. I moved here a few months ago from New York, and I was hoping we could sit down together sometime and you could tell me how to get started singing in this area.”…. Or something really awkward like that. Cherry and Robin both looked at me like I was from Mars, and did that “yikes, get away from this crazy woman” move. So it was quite awhile later that I finally built some trust with them and had a chance to meet and hang out.

I found Cherry to be amazingly talented and charming, and her audiences felt the same way. I remember being at the annual NWA Music Awards year after year, when Cherry and her band won award after award. I remember when Cherry added Cal to the band, and that added even more to their iconic sound.

Through the years, like everyone else, I followed Cherry and Cal’s music career as they played together, and watched them grow closer and closer, and then got the news they had married. And later, although I was so very happy for them that they moved to the great music city of Memphis, I was sad to see them leave our area. I knew we would all miss them
.
Then, going home from a gig one night, they were both lost to us forever. But not lost to our memories. We love you, Cherry and Cal. And now all the rest of you players, be careful out there."

You have to open your mind. I like the ability to express myself in a deep way. It's the closest music to our humanity - it's like a folk music that rises up out of a culture.
