Alki UCC Weekly Messenger July 14, 2017
This Sunday, July 16, 10:00 am
“Bless to Me”, a four-part series based on the Celtic tradition of “blessing prayers”.
This lovely practice has endured through the centuries among the Celtic people of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, revealing a sense of the holy in every moment, in every object, and in every person. This week’s focus in on “Celebrating the Gifts of Life.” One of the ways we notice the blessings of our lives is to simply delight in the “small things,” be it the morning cup of coffee, a bird song or walking the dog.
Have you been saying your prayers?
Last Sunday Pastor Diane distributed copies of two very simple prayers for the start and end of day, encouraging us to use them daily and see how it affects us. If you were not in worship and would like a copy of those prayers, just ask and she’ll send you a copy by email.
FROM THE PASTOR: Share Some Hope!
An Invitation to Share Some Hope!
Right after worship we’ll take a group photo of us with signs saying things like “Have Hope,” “You’re Brave,” “Stay Strong.” During coffee hour we’ll take some individual photos too. What’s this for?

One of our newer folks at church, Sara Jane Walsh, creates inspiring videos for children who have cancer or other debilitating illness.
It’s called the “Here’s Hope Project". Check out the website to learn more about it and see some of the beautiful videos she’s made. She asked if I thought some of the church children and adults would be willing to be part of the video she’s currently working on and I said “Of course!”
Her goal is to have 100 contributors, and right now she has 71. She’d also love to get the name of everyone who contributes so we can be listed in the credits. “They say every story has a hero. I want to show people a story with 100 heroes.” NOTE: Sara Jane will bring some signs for us to use, but you’re encouraged to make your own with a simple upbeat message (see her website for samples).
Children especially are encouraged to make a sign in their own hand and bring it on Sunday. What a great opportunity!
Summer Food Drive Challenge
to Benefit the West Seattle Food Bank
Thanks for your starter donations ... but we have a long way to go filling that barrel!

For many children in our community and across the US, summer is the hungriest time of year. Our most vulnerable
kids lose access to school feeding programs and food donations dwindle.

Last summer, Alki UCC joined with Admiral & Fauntleroy churches in a friendly competition to collect at least 1,000 lbs each.

This year, we're upping the donations challenge to 2,500 lbs.. Let's fill up that barrel!
