Responding to the Opioid Epidemic
I’m very happy to report that we’re supporting an application by the Allegany Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (ACASA) and the Council on Addiction Recovery Services (CAReS) to the Appalachian Regional Commission to fund an expansion of medication assisted treatment programs for people suffering with opioid addiction. The grant will enable ACASA and CAReS to purchase equipment and support outreach activities to provide medication assisted treatment services. We are also helping the Erie County Department of Health apply for a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) opportunity to expand the use of Narcan/naloxone by first responders and coordinate care for people with opioid addiction. This opportunity will provide additional doses of Narcan to all eight counties of Western New York. Our Southern Tier Overdose Prevention Program (STOPP) continues to train first responders and friends and family members of those like to overdose in the use of Narcan to reverse the effects of an overdose and save lives. I’m very happy that we’re able to support these efforts across the region to save lives and end the opioid epidemic in our communities.

Foster Grandparent Presentation
John Eberth gave a presentation on STHCS programs to Lutheran Social Services Foster Grandparent Program volunteers Thursday at Brookside Community Apartments in Olean. The volunteer foster grandparents help children across our Tri-County area, sharing their time and experience. The Foster Grandparents help children learn how to read, prepare for school readiness and help them develop academic and life skills that are critical to childhood development and future success. Recognizing that the children and families they serve could benefit from some of our programs, the Foster Grandparent Program reached out to us for information on our programs. I want to thank the Foster Grandparent Program for their interest in STHCS and look forward to partnering with them in the future.
