OGH Certified as Gold Safe Sleep Champion
I’m very excited to share that Olean General Hospital has been certified as a Gold Safe Sleep Champion Hospital by Cribs for Kids. This effort grew out of our Cribs for Kids program and a partnership with the hospital for the Office of Children and Family Services Safe Sleep Kits Pilot Program. Becoming gold certified shows the hospital’s commitment to reducing infant sleep-related deaths by promoting evidence-supported infant safe sleep practices. Expectant parents who receive services at Olean General are taught safe sleep practices such as having babies sleep alone, on their backs in a crib with no loose blankets, clothes or stuffed animals. The hospital is also using Halo Sleep Sacks instead of blankets to model best-practice safe sleep recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics. I want to thank Olean General Hospital for their ongoing commitment to their patients and our community. I also want to thank our Prevention Coordinator Jeff Ciminesi for helping the hospital coordinate the Safe Sleep Pilot Program and Cribs for Kids Gold Safe Sleep Hospital Certification.
Windsong Mobile Mammography
Windsong Radiology Group will start a mobile mammography unit for Western New York beginning in January. I attended a meeting Tuesday at Windsong’s Williamsville office to review their plan for the service. The mobile mammography unit is being supported by a grant from the New York State Department of Health. Windsong officials stressed that the goal of the project is to provide mammography services to women who are not receiving recommended mammograms in breast cancer “hot spot” areas. Identified hot spots in our region include Salamanca, Cuba and Houghton. The DOH reports that hot spot areas have a high incidence of late breast cancer diagnosis which makes treatment difficult and decreases the chance of positive patient outcomes. Windsong is hoping to partner with medical providers and hospitals to ensure that patients who are diagnosed with breast cancer receive the follow-up medical care and services they need.
