1.  Parent Talk Tip of the Month #1:
"I wonder what you have learned from this?" is more effective than "I hope you learned a lesson here."

2. Back to School Readiness Video
The first sign that summer is coming to an end has been spotted, a sale on every school supply imaginable, book bags, pens, pencils, glue stick, spiral note pad, compass, calculator, 3-ring binder, gym shoes, and clothes. Back to school is in the air. We are soon to be bombarded with back to school sales in magazines, newspapers, television ads, and store flyers.

But what do children really need in order to be ready for school?

3. Family Matters Video Question
QUESTION:

I’m a mom of five children between the ages of one and thirteen. They are all so very different. What is the best discipline strategy that I could apply to all my children?

6.  Parent Talk Essentials School Section

We all agree that getting a good education is important. We want our kids to take school seriously, yet we don’t want to nag at them about homework and other school issues. What do you say and how do you communicate your concerns about the importance of school success?

In the Parent Talk Essentials book you will find help in developing the verbal skills that will allow you to communicate effectively to your children about school.

Below is a list of a few of the essential phrases you will learn to use (or not use) with your children.

• "Do you have any homework?"

• "You have a lot of assignments to do here. How did this happen?"

• "It’s feed-your-brain time."

• "Let me know if you want my help."

• "This sentence got my attention and I wanted to read on."

• "What an intelligent kid you are."

• "Which two do you think are the most important?"

• "Would you be willing to put your name on it?"

• "What did you learn in school today?"

• "Grades are important, and who you are is made up of a lot more than what is on this report card."

• "That’s it. You’re grounded."

• "I’ll give you ten dollars for every A."

• "What is your goal?"

• "There is no such thing as a permanent record."

• "I know you’re up to it."
