Early voting starts Sept. 21st for the City primary. Twelve individuals filed their intent to run for City Council in the 2017 primary. The Oct. 10th primary will narrow the field to six candidates on the ballot for the general election in November vying for three seats on Asheville City Council.

Conference to focus on role of railroad in transportation and economic development
|
The upcoming Railroads & Regional Economic Development Conference will focus on the dynamic and diverse changes in today's railroad industry and rail's critical role in regional transportation planning and development. Deadline to register is Friday, Sept. 15th.
Sessions will focus on how Western North Carolina can work to improve and expand freight services in the region; increase excursions to and through the mountains; promote existing tourist lines; and re-establish a passenger rail connection to Asheville and WNC.
This highly anticipated event will be held on Friday, September 22nd at the US Cellular Center Banquet at 8:30 a.m.
The conference is coordinated by the Western North Carolina Rail Committee, Inc, co-chaired by Marion Mayor Steve Little, Freddie Killough of the Marion Business Association and Ray Rapp of Mars Hill University.

Diversity Engagement Coalition offers Professional Development Series

The Western North Carolina Diversity Engagement Coalition (DEC), a network of organizations dedicated to increasing diversity, equity and inclusion, presents the Fall 2017 Professional Development Series, Sept. 27-Nov. 15. The program is open to employees who would like to better position themselves for advancement. Learning objectives include: Building and strengthening relationships, Understanding your personal strengths, Managing conflict and navigating challenging environments, Negotiation skills, Developing your narrative, Developing and deepening leadership skills while increasing your value.
The Asheville Chamber is a member of the WNC Diversity Engagement Coalition which seeks to bring people together to collectively support the professional development, engagement, and inclusion of multicultural people within the member organizations in Western North Carolina and to serve as a resource for organizations around best policy and practice regarding equity in the workplace.
