Becoming a Work Ready Community
It can be tough finding just the right employee. Take the guesswork out of finding workers with the right skill set by helping Buncombe County become a Certified Work Ready Community (CWRC). This initiative is powered by the ACT® National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC™). CWRC offers a suite of assessments and certifications that measure an individual’s foundational workplace skills such as math, reading and locating – skills required for a majority of today’s jobs. Plus, your participation in helping Buncombe County become a Certified Work Ready Community benefits not just your company, but our entire county. The efforts of CWRC is helping job seekers understand what skills employers are looking for, and it helps local educators prepare students for success. It also provides employers with an accurate assessment of the skill level of the workforce, which helps your company hire the right candidates.

Registration for your business, company or institution is fast and easy through this website, https://www.workreadycommunities.org/NC/021. For more information on the Work Ready Communities Collaborative, please contact Tim Lampkin at 828-258-6128, tlampkin@ashevillechamber.org or Terry Bellamy at 828-398-7604, terrymbellamy32@abtech.edu.

Avoiding Legal Pitfalls of Social Media
With billions of users, social media has become integral for a business' marketing and branding. Although its benefits are numerous, social media can create a minefield of legal problems for employers.
In our October Smart Series session on Oct. 4th, we will provide an overview of new and trending legal issues relating to social media usage in the workplace, and provide tips and tools to assist employers in complying with their legal obligations and protecting their employees' rights.

PitchBreakfast comes to Asheville

This Wednesday, our entrepreneur initiative Venture Asheville welcomed the first PitchBreakfast. PitchBreakfast, which also holds events in Charlotte and Charleston, gives startups an opportunity to practice their investor pitch in a safe and supportive environment. Four companies will each pitch for 5 minutes followed by 10 minutes of Q&A and feedback from our expert panel. The first Asheville PitchBreakfast included a presentation by loyalty program LoLo.

Audience members can find value in hearing how other startups pitch, what types of feedback (both positive and negative) they receive, and of course seeing some of Asheville's up-and-coming startups while networking with other entrepreneurs and startup community leaders. Stay tuned for future PitchBreakfast events.
