Open Enrollment Dates Set
I wanted to remind everyone that the open enrollment period for the NY State of Health, health-insurance marketplace will begin on November 1 and continue through January 31. During last year’s open enrollment period, NY State of Health reported that over 50,000 New Yorkers signed up for health insurance during the final two days of the open enrollment period. Our own health-insurance navigators were also extremely busy during open enrollment, particularly during January. I’m very glad we are able to provide health insurance navigation assistance to members of our community. I want to thank Healthy Community Alliance and Universal Primary Care for contracting with us to provide this much-needed service. If you know of anyone who needs assistance applying for health insurance through the NY State of Health marketplace, please have the call us at (716) 372-0614 or visit health insurance enrollment assistance for more information.
American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign
We’re helping the American Red Cross promote their successful Home Fire Campaign during October which is National Fire Safety Month. The Red Cross has set a goal of reducing fire-related injuries and deaths nationwide by 25 percent by 2020. October is National Fire Safety Month. The campaign began in October, 2014, and is already credited with saving 268 lives by preparing families to survive a fire emergency. The Red Cross is asking every family to do two simple things: adopt and practice a home fire escape plan and install smoke detectors in their homes or ensure that existing smoke detectors are working and have fresh batteries. As part of the campaign, the Red Cross volunteers will visit peoples’ homes, do a home fire safety assessment and provide free smoke alarms if they are needed. To schedule a home visit, please email smokealarms.wny@redcross.org or call (716) 878-2353. We’ve agreed to provide the Red Cross with office space so they can meet with displaced families following fires and other emergencies.
