Leaves are beginning to fall from deciduous trees. Remember that they are a valuable resources that can help improve your soil. Compost them. Don’t discard them!
Mow your yard with a mulching mower to break up leaves right on the lawn and improve the lawn's soil. Pollinator lovers…create over-wintering habitat for pollinators with fallen leaves, a little bare ground, and shrub clippings. Birds love brush piles too!
If you are raking leaves, we have biodegradable brown paper bags and leaf “funnels” for easy leaf collection.
Staff Spotlight on MARC
FROM WILMA:  Marc Montell grew up in Ohio, and is a graduate of the Ohio State University (MFA). After college he spent 14 years in New York City in the art business - making it, selling it, caring for it and teaching. He also worked some odd jobs including legal proofreader, taxi driver, and production assistant on TV commercials.
As a youngster, Marc convinced his dad to build a water garden in the family’s front yard. After two years as a preparator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Marc decided to pursue a long-held interest in water gardening and worked for two aquatic plant and fish wholesalers in Seattle and San Francisco.
Marc worked with us at Reems Creek Nursery pre-economic crisis, during the early 2000’s. After working at Biltmore Estate for approximately 5 years, he rejoined our staff earlier this year. At Biltmore, he enjoyed the Italian Garden with the 50-yr. old Koi, the dangerous (but beautiful) Victoria Platter lilies, and the dragonflies. Marc’s artistic background is a help in the Garden Shop!
Bee City USA is raffling off this beautiful original and one-of-a-kind oil painting valued at $2000 as a fundraiser for the organization (the photo of the painting absolutely does not do the painting justice!). Let’s support the important work of Bee City USA - buy raffle tickets!
Buy raffle tickets at Reems Creek Nursery (please bring cash or check) or at the Bee City website.
(Only 250 total tickets will be sold - so your odds are good!)
Tickets are $10 each, or $40 for 5 tickets.
The winning entry will be drawn on November 29, 2017 at Noon ET.
"The Beekeeper"
16" X 20" oil on canvas painting valued at $2000
“The Beekeeper” is artist Sally Lesene's tribute to beekeepers. With smoker lit, a beekeeper examines a frame beneath blooming sourwood branches, surrounded by Blue Ridge Mountain wildflowers—Turk’s cap lily, bee balm, black-eyed Susan and cardinal flower.
Raffle proceeds will benefit Bee City USA, a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Asheville, that galvanizes communities to sustain pollinators by providing them with healthy habitat that is rich in a variety of native plants and free to nearly-free of pesticides.
See "The Beekeeper" painting in person. It is on display at the Asheville Bee Charmer in downtown Asheville, North Carolina.
